Yes folks, the the unthinkable happened the other day. Magnum 30% fuel shot right in my left eye while fueling my heli. Fortunately this was while I was still home AND near my sink. In intense shock and panic I rushed blindly to my sink and flushed my eye out with cold water full blast. The other challenge was keeping the water out of my nose. After choaking a few times I got smart and thought to plug my nose. (hey I almost lost my eye ball, cut me a little slack, alright?)

After flushing and flushing, moving my eye around while still flushing and blinking while flushing for about 10 minutes, I dried myself off and did some eye tests. So far I could see fairly normally, needless to say I had just a little bit of irritation after all that. I layed down and put about six Aller Clear eye drops in and just layed there with my eyes closed for a while. To distract myself I just kept thinking of piro flipping on the deck. That always helps bring a smile to my face. (how geeky is that?!)

The next morning I woke up fairly normal. I put more eye drops in, and let it soak in. The end of the story is I can see perfectly fine and I even flew this next day. I have no irritation this next day and I practically forgot all about it.

What a mess. I think I will wear at least protective eye wear while fueling up next time. Thank god!!!!!

good thing you got to rinse it out. How many people have enough water at the field to rinse out their eye?

Glad nothing serious happened to your eye.

Man, I miss the eighties.

You can be sure after this story I'll bring water with me just in case!

Thank you for sharing.

How were you fueling your heli? I have an electric hobbico fuel pump that is marked 6-12v. On 12v it makes too much pressure. I was worried about blowing a fuel line off inside the tank or having the fill line pop off the tank and hitting me in the eye with fuel. I now run it off a 4.8v pack. It works fine and is much less scarry

I was using an manual hand crank pump. I wasn't turning it wild fast - just at a normal rate. But for some reason it blew off and blasted right in my face. I feel extremely fortunate I did not suffer cornea damage or worse.

i hate when i fuel and get it all over my hands and then rub my eyes, ya know to get the drops of sweat off, after just autoing after a flame out @ 50' and having never autoed b4 well other then the occasional 5'ers to keep the tail out the long grass. yea i ve seen the oldtimers/ lazy people with the el pumps all jacked up to 24v tring to refuel in second like the pit crew of an indy crew whats the need for them ?? i got my origional hand crank for yrs now, it froze once but i got it worked out but i must have seen a dozen or so planks filled to the cockpit after blowing off lines and the owner bs ing instead of watching. sorry to hear about ur eye i guess the sun glasses help me but goggles is a good idea, there was a thread the other wk. red got hit but blade shrapnel from a lead weight when a heli went down but hes got some damage i think if your reading this definate wake up call wear goggles or eye protection, we only got the 2 u came with and as far as i know no chance for replacement yet

tip -double up the line where ur fueler connects, like cut a 3/8 " long piece of large fuel hose and slide it over the end, now it acts as a clamp, i do this to all my line connections added security in a unsecure world esp if you use hayes clunk line i ve seen that stuff swell right off the clunk and input line

Excellent tip. Thanks.

I think some people should wear a haz mat full body suite when refueling! Hahaha Look out everybody, George is fueling up.

Man, I can relate to this story. Couple weeks ago the same thing happened to me and talk about burning, stinging sensation in the eye.
Lucky for me I was home to flush it out fast. Good tip with the fuel line clamp.

I was doing a repair on my tail belt pinion drive of my T-rex 450 a few yrs ago. I used thin CA glue and squeezed the parts together, next thing...squirt of glue in my right eye.

Panic....yes, this stuff set instantly and even blinking would have my eye shut permanently and the chemicals eating my eye from inside.

Fortunately I was able to flush it very quickly and ended up putting in eye drops. I saw the doc the next morning as it was rough as hell to blink and he said I had a few minor scratches on the surface and gave me ointment.

No long term problems, could have been a lot worse!!!

Wow, DJDAZ: that is highly impressive that your eye was resilient to CA glue?? Amazing. I fear my cornea getting damaged above all.

Holy crap, CA in the eye. You guys are making me think about wearing safety glasses now. Sam I will let Kenny G CRW's safety officer know that you are required to wear safety glasses at Brooks.

Many many moons ago while flying planks, I doused myself in the lap with fuel. The sensations to my tender bits were, to say the least "enlightening."

If it's got wings I can fly it......Waddya mean no wings!!!???

I cant count how many times my glasses saved my eyes from projectiles - solid or liquid. Even contact lenses provide a barrier to direct contact of nasty projectiles with the eyeball.

Glasses, of course, must not cause damage due to itself breaking from some impact. But for liquids, it works like a champ against the initial blast.

Back when I was briefly into RC Nitro Cars, I got CA in my eye while putting new treads on a wheel. The tire snapped into place and shot the CA out at high velocity right into my eye. I PANICKED. I though for sure I would go blind. Just a flush with some water and all was fine. Didn't even really burn. Scared the crap out of me more than anything.

I have had nitro in my eye at the field as well...no water for flushing available so I just blotted it off and dealt with the burning. was really only bad for a few min then just red and irritated....

I think CA in my eye would freak me out though...good to know its not that bad either

I put the fun in dysFUNctional :)

I got a bit of a nitro shower today.

While my tank was pressurized, I pulled the fuel dot off my fill line before I opened the vent line.

No nitro in the eye, but I did get some in my mouth.
In retrospect, it was all a lot of fun.

3 years is enough time wasted. Taking a break for a while.
