I have RF 3.5 and 4.0 and Phoenix. To me either one is a good sim. RF has higher computer requirements and costs more. I'm a bit resentful that Great Planes doesn't allow upgrading 3.5 to 4.5 after a point, even for a small price say $29. It really irritates me that they design things to obsolence. Phoenix doesn't have the high computer requirements and upgrades are easy to get online. But the one big selling point is the graphics are second to no one. I still look at the graphics while flying and get distracted. They have current model helis rather than some make believe model like RF.

Phoenix online service, be it sales, tech support or just a "kickin the tires" question are answered as soon as the sun rises over there. I'm amazed by their service. I was leary to order online overseas, but their website is secure with followup documents for peace of mind.

My to cents go for,
Phoenix.

Anyone got change for a Dollar?

If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

I get 280 frames per second on RF G4. Sometime over 300. Obviously undetectable. I do have a reasonable machine. On the marooned feild the frame rates get down into the 70's.
The graphics are pretty good on real flight. Some flight characteristics could be better. Just depends if you want to use your own radio or have the RF one ready by the computer to go.
Getting down to the last minute detail for a sim is picking the fly poop out of the pepper in my opinion. It's just a tool for learning.
By the cheapest one of the two.

BTW....if you have a crap computer your simming is crap. If you can't run it with all the fruit on then upgrade your machine and the experience will be much better.

After you see the Phoenix operate no matter how great your computer, you will enjoy it more than RF.

Aero Fly Pro Deluxe sucks for helicopters. It's ok for basic stuff like orientation. Flys nothing like the real thing. Airplanes are good.

I tried RF 4.5 and was not impressed but I think I could get it to work well with enough tweaking.

Just got Phoenix after trying it on a friends machine and love it for Helis. Got it used for $90 as well so you cannot beat that deal!

respectfully thats your opinion.

I have had a few goes on other computers on phoenix and I wouldn't say your above statement is necessarily true.
The whole package should be considered and having the controller there with no requirement to charge batteries etc or use your good radio I find better. If you want to fly with your transmitter then obviously Px is better.
Graphics wise...G4 is great but the difference to PX isn't enough to sway me away from the convienience of the controller. I tend to fly the heli and practice and the background doesn't concern me. I just use the photo backgrounds and honestly don't even look at it....just the heli.

The flight characteristics can be tweaked on either and the aurora on G4 flies just like my 700N for real. I am not a G4 lover and in fact I am pi$$ed too at having this controller upgrade to get later version sims so I will not be upgrading to another. Not trying to defend the sim because I have it (I have had many sims) just letting people know there is nothing wrong with it as a sim and it has a bonus in the controller.

Look at the whole deal and not just one aspect.
If Pheonix is cheaper and you want to use your own TX....get it.

Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Mazda,... liberal, conservative, on and on.

It's all personal preference, what is important to YOU?

RF 4.5 is a system hog, but it is far better for fixed wing work than Phoenix. RF has more options and features, which may be important to you, or not. The controller is much better if you de-ratchet the throttle and switch the throttle hold and rotary pot.

If you fly heli's, Phoenix 2.5M is far better than RF - any version, but thats my opinion! It operates far better than RF on a mid range computer. Graphics, physics, tunability make it a premier heli sim.
But, the sound leaves a bit to be desired.

Just my 2 cents

You keep saying "GF"? Why?

Dood, a true case of thinking one thing and typing something else. Something to do with RF and G4 and typing way too fast.

Cheers

He did ask for opinions didn't he?

Michael,
Try a Phoenix sim before you buy or download their demo before you decide. Judge for yourself.

Real Flight G4.5 is awesome. I use it quite a bit. I'm glad I bought it. I've heard phoenix is nice, but I haven't used it myself. I think probably both would be nice, either way, it just depends on your computer and how powerful it is, to beable to handle the visual effects that both sim's have to offer. In my opinion that is.

I can crash like no other on G4.5!

Autos in G3.5 is too easy because of the headspeed in autos, as in you gain a lot more headspeed than in real life.G4.5 is much improved for auto. It is in fact slightly harder than reality.

Flight physics between G3.5, G4 and G4.5 is actually quite similar.

Weird as it may be, G4 and G4.5 actually run smoother than G3.5 if you have a not so ideal graphic card. They will run fine even on integrated graphic from intel, just that you will have to turn off all the effects and fly in photofields.

To get decent frame rate for realflight on a typical 20" monitor with all the graphic setting at max on rendered fields, you will need a system with any core 2 duo processor, at least 1gb of ram and very importantly, at least an ATI 4830 or geforce 9800gt card.

22 inch samsung. quad core overclocked. two 8800GT's in sli overclocked. 4 gigs ram. soundblaster music card. Eats Realflight G4 for breakfast at highest res. Eats grid and dirt as well. I love having a descent computer.
The sound on realflight is better than phoenix. I can get massive blade farts on G4 where PX is really tame.
I would like more realistic auto's though. Can lead you into a false sense of security.

Ok, we got everything sorted out with a big thanks to tech3rcheli.

The Phoenix 2.5m is incredible!!! with the computer Im running it on I can set everything to the highest setting without even a flinch. The graphics are better then G4.5. Feels much more realistic to me. Now I see what I have been missing!!! Anyone looking for a real nice G4.5 system
