Guy's : I use a lot of standard off the shelf 3mm socket head cap screws along with allan head set screws of various point configurations.

Recently picked up a 3mm X .60 standard tap and the TPI is not even close to the cap and set screw thread pitch I'm accustom too. Seems like the tap is a coarse thread.

Not really sure if I've got a such a thing as metric coarse tap.

Any one know what the standard TPI is of the cap screws are ??

If any one want's to swap I'm setting on a lot of 2/56, 4/40 and 5/40
Cleveland's,& TRW's.

Hey,

Standard pitch for an M3 thread is 0.5 pitch.
I'm a former engineer and I do not recall ever seeing an M3 0.6 before, but they must be available as you have one.

Hole size for tapping is 2.5mm.

The metric threads generally used on helis are from the Coarse range. So an M3 'normal' would be 0.50 pitch which equates to about 51 TPI.

The other Metric range is Fine. There can be a couple of choices of pitch in the Fine range though. The corresponding M3 Fine is 0.35 pitch.

In M8, the standard coarse is 1.25 pitch, but the Fine range can be 0.75 or 1.0 pitch. The clutch bell on the raptor is a case where the Fine pitch is used.

The ISO standards can be found here..http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/m...eads-d_777.html

Of course there is nothing to stop anyone with a machine making any diameter with any pitch, but nobody else's nuts will fit. :-)

Super Thanx Guy's !

I thought I was dreaming ! I holding the tap and it's package and it's a definite M3 X 0.060 ! It also proudly states made in the USA .
A Master Mechanic ??? Carbon tap. Etching still visable

Typical huh ? Most likly a repackaged Kung Foo

Now I got to find a M3 that sticks to the ISO standards because us Yanks sure didn't. It's bugered one hole so far.

Good luck finding HSS For awhile their I thought I had a British National Standard Pipe tap or something.

Wish me luck on my hunt !! Thank's again !

Metric taps are not rare, here is a selection of 31 in your size...

http://www.mcmaster.com/#metric-taps/=3fzvpq
You will need to click the metric size of 3 x .5

Don't think the world is against you just because you bought the wrong size.

Metric is nothing new for us "yanks". Every car built in America has been designed and manufactured in metric for years now.

You bought a bastard tap from someone that isn't in the tool business. All the taps that I own are HSS. I haven't seen a Carbon tap in 35 years.
