As scale enthusiasts, a large part of what we do is observe. Whether its observing scale details to replicate on our models or the way in which the real aircraft flys and handles.
The aim of this topic is to act as a focus to discuss and show scale manoeuvres. In scale competitions, no matter how detailed the aircraft, I believe there should only be a maximum of 50% going to the aircraft and its details. The remainder should be allocated to scale flying ability and manoeuvres. This way no matter how true the aircraft, if it doesn't fly,(with scale moves) then its unlikely to win. I believe LHC's flying competition, based in UK, is a balanced approach to this concept - and seems to work very well.

To set the ball rolling, I've included a couple of links to some scale moves (full size). If you have any comments or footage you'd like to include to this topic, then please add - it would be good to hear from you.

Jet Ranger Landing

Hey thats really good quality video RLW.

Its really topical that you posted that as there was quite a lot of discussion on this subject at the Vario meet a couple of weeks ago.

This Jet Ranger was doin exactly what most people said a fullsize heli never does, landing down wind and a good wind at that, it was gusting 20knots !

This guy repeatedly flew in down wind with a long gentle descent so it just goes to prove it can be done.

Did you film the Alouette landing ? That was fun to watch, the Alouette has a pretty weak tail (so I was told by Gus Alyward the pilot on the day) and as the final approach was down wind and then the taxi hover was across wind it made for an interesting landing to say the least.

For anyone that wasn't there the taxi was between a 8ft metal fence and a row of other heli's with about a 50ft gap between the two
and a few lamp post thrown in for good measure!

Here's the Scout showing how it should be done.

Good Idea....

I think this is going to turn into a VERY GOOD post...(I hope!!!) Since a lot of us do not have the oppurtunity to see full size doing what they do....
Hope this one goes for quite some time......
Thanks for starting it..... Stan

Weston Heliday

Nice photo's Nic,
It was a great day out. I think we've chatted a few times at Fly-ins as you modelled your Allouette on the machine which flew in also.
It was good to see all the heli's, but I didn't catch any vintage flying during the sat afternoon - which was a shame. Nice to see the Scout airborne therefore. Do you have any video footage of it manoeuvring?

This was rather interesting (Skeeter)and would have been nice to see going through its paces.

At one of our local heli events, a 'full scale' R22 did a four point piro down our model runway. Flew a little sideways, a little backward, other side, back to forward and then off it went.

When I track down a video cam, I'll go to one of the many offshore helicopter bases around here and get some video of diff heli's, to add to your post to help out. Take care!

Matt, the pics were taken at the Helidays event in Weston super mare last weekend.

Rob, unfortunately I was to busy taking stills to video anything.
Sadly the Skeeter's been grounded now and it arrived on a trailer, the blades are no longer airworthy. They are constructed from a steel spar, wooden ribs and covered in cloth, similar to vintage aircraft wings and the steel is rusting on the inside.
I like the idea for this post, I'm sure there must be plenty of guys with video clips out there.

hi Nick

I thought it was the skeeter, it is known as the Hath, and one of 4 i know. in the uk. It was given the military and they via the CAA they got it grounded.
To try and disprove the CAA ruling would mean a hefty court case battle, I read the article in a magazine and know personally 2 Pilots who own one. Its ashame as i missed the chance to go up in one over a year ago, that was flown and owned outright by an old RR user Skeeter Pilot..

It still is fully flyable but due to Caa ruling it is in a lock up somewhere...

Embedded YouTube

Many thanks for embedding these clips - Its good that we've got this post off to a good start. I think helicopter co-ordinated moves are one of the captivating things about the heli. Always had me fascinated as a kid. If some of you guys (or gals) have any clips or shots of manoeuvres, please add and discuss - after all this is what makes a heli-pilot, full size or model.

I would be interested in seeing an approach and landing and take off on an offshore platform. Aborted landing(s). Backing takeoff(s). I don't have access to seeing the real thing much any more and most of what I have seen is Emergency Response/medical type stuff.

Thanks
Jack

Here is the Skeeter in all its glory, it was such a lovely smooth helicopter, in fact it's the smoothest that I have known.
Grounded more out of politics, nothing to do with the blades... that was the excuse.
I expect the Scout will be next and that's just the thin end of the wedge no doubt.
Here it is in the garden and in the air.

Wow - take a look at this one going through its paces. (Rich if you're looking at this post - it would be good to watch your Turbine Cobra doing this!)

This is a Demo Flight, what i like is the nice slow ciruits to start off with and then some hovering and then some FFF a real mixture that almost could be a freestyle part of scale a comp.. - (Going by ircha and other scale events on youtube.)

A lot of those manouvers, with practice, one could build up a nice little structured routine.. and with a scale fuse on i am sure it would look really nice and give a pilot a deep sense of satisfaction and a sense accomplishment.. well thats i am looking to achieve. - the accuracy

Great thread..

A little crazy, but they are scale.

Precision co-ordination

Has anyone got any footage of a machine (model or full size) slowly and precisely orientating and then manoeuvring for a specific task, such as pylon fixing, winching or such like (like Peter's clip). The rock-steady but precise moves are just as difficult to perform as the crowd pleasers.
