finally getting close to completing a new 3DNT...well close enough to start thinking about fuel.

i've looked/called everywhere i can think of and can't find any 12% oil/0% nitro for sale. so, i'll mix my own.

i picked up a gallon of powermaster FAI -advertised as 80% methanol and 20% castor.

i also ordered a 5 gallon can of VP methanol to mix it down.

i have a few questions:

1) my math says 128oz of FAI (1 gallon) + 85oz of methanol will yield 10% oil. anyone care to check my math?

2) will the castor from the FAI be ok, or should i opt for a synthetic blend? this is a new engine...i'd rather not break in with a weak mix.

3) are the additives in a brand name mix sufficient to warrant spending the extra? in other words, i spent $17 for the gallon of FAI..i'm sure i could get it cheaper by the case. But, if i just mix some castor or synthetic to my 100% methanol it would be even cheaper yet. i'm not trying to cut corners...just no sense spending unnecessarily.

thanks for any/all comments.

if it ain't broke…break it.

If you want 10% oil,and currently have 1 gallon of fuel at 20% oil, then you need to mix a whole gallon of methanol with it to produce 2 gallons of fuel at 10% oil,or you can mix 1/2 a gallon of 20% and 1/2 a gallon of methanol to produce 1 gallon.your maths is wrong.

you can mix the fuel yourself no problem,I inherited 4 gallons of home brew fuel with my 3dnt when i had one,and it ran fine, there were no additives in that fuel.castor will work, but synthetic is cleaner.there will be no rusting in this engine due to no nitro,so castor is not really needed.

all comments are my opinion only!

Definitely would go synthetic.
I also mixed my own fuel when I owned the 3DNT.
Used 1 gallon of Wildcat straight plus 1/2 gallon of methonal.
The Wildcat was 18% oil to start, so that bought it down to 12%.
Ran perfectly on an Enya No4 plug (not 3!)

thanks for the advice. i'm still waiting to hear whether my LHS can source wildcat FAI...havent heard back yet.

but, the 3DNT manual says to use 12% not 10%. 85oz of methanol should yield 12%.

if it ain't broke…break it.
