use to have one, main issues:

1) drive to the tail is wire (unless you got EX version or something)
2) don't think that it's a driven tail
3) auto hub might break on you (because you're running an 80 and not a 60 which it was designed for)
4) control has many parts and normal version is not ball raced
5) head's old but is OK

It was smooth and nice, but the Freya would suit you better. It would be a heli I'd have around until I crashed it if you know what I mean..

I'm one of the few on this forum that actually fly that model in F3C.

Actually, when the model was introduced (back in the early 1990's) a very young Hashimoto few the helicopter at the US Nationals when it was held in MA to introduce it from Hirobo.

The first thing I would ask is if you will be flying the model in F3C or one of the other AMA classes. If you don't need to auto, the driven tail is not required and the drive wire will work (but I far preferred the tube).

You could probably just stick with an old 60 and get some good flying accomplished but there is very little replacement parts available and most of that is from some old pilots that have "stuff" laying around.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

This one has a longer boom with the torque tube. So you would replace the YS 80 engine for a 60 size engine?? And why?

Replacing with the 80 is more of a function of the gear ratio needs and reliability of the additional stress on the powertrane.

I guess if it's been working with the 80 I'd probably keep using it. I really would not add anymore money to the model (other then minor maintenance items) since it really cannot be maintained long term.

The model is pretty smooth and is capable of precision aerobatic flight. What class of competition are you planning to compete in?

Hello there,

I used to have one Tsurugi XX and loved this heli. It was so smooth and predictable. I flew it in some of the local F3C competition (back in the mid to late 90s) and it was great..

Never had any problems with it...I was using the OS-61SXH WC engine back then. Never tried the YS80 with it...again I really think that if you want to use the YS80, you need to change the gear ratio to about 8.45 or higher as it suits the motor better. I suppose you can try 9.1 gear ratio as the 91T is available now from HIROBO and it should fit well with the TSURUGI with its 10T clutch bell.

Have a go and tell us how it feels.

Again, it was one of those helis that enabled me to get really comfortable with flying aerobatics...miss it actually...

Best,

Jonathan

Which set of blades and Tail blades would you recommend for F3C? And also are most people running governors on their f3c machines?

Blades etc.

I believe I ran 660mm (perhaps 680mm) blades on the model. I don't know if the tail is far back enough to run 700mm. I really have no idea what size I used on the tail. Again, it would be helpful to know what class competition you are aiming to determine how to optimize your setup.

Many of the contest pilots use governors; some of use it in all flight conditions and some use it in the hover only and have throttle curves in the aerobatics. I'd say (with your 80 and gear ratio) a governor could help with over speed (and potential engine damage).

I'm pretty sure I used one on one of my Tsusugi (back in the day).

Good luck.
