The Trans Housing is Split

I split the housing today and I'm very happy how it came out.. I used a jeweler's saw which gives a very fine cut.. I added some tabs in the dog house area but it really didn't need it.. Everything was rock solid..

I need to do some sanding of the edges for a cleaner look and it's complete.

this paint is an automotive primer, you will need to go to a paint supplier to get it. It is DuPont A-4115S, green

It's a Jello fruit cup for the base and the plastic top off a Testors spray can.. The top is roughed up with sandpaper to look like the exhausts in one of the Cobra pictures in Dr Tim's CD..

thats the look I'm looking for. It was really bothering me because I used to work in a turbine engine shop as a mechanic, then the shop manager and having seen real turbine exhausts for so long the featureless straight paper was making me break out in hives....

did you leave it open so air can pass through? I plan on having mine open so I can get some extra cooling airflow through there

I have the wings done, and the stabilizer. also pieced the gear together just to see how it looks with it attached. Doc Tim, do I push the side struts further into the fuselage? I think I am going to use some small 4-40 bolts to hold all the gear tubing joints together.

The Landing Gear looks pretty good were you have it. You can adjust it in or out to suit .. after it is good you can whick in some thin CA or I Like to use 1/2 hour Epoxy, Adjust it were I like it then let it setup. The Thin CA Method allow NO TIME TO ADJUST so have it right the first time!! After I have one side correct I block up the fuselage (A Small box or something under the belly) then setup the other side Skids .. this way they will be the same and the helicopter won't sit funny ...

I leave alot of the details up to the builder and just provide the basics ... Grants Exhaust Idea is BRILLIANT!!!

hey Grant it would look realistic if you cut a thin band of styrene or just heavy paper stock, say about 1/4 inch wide and wrap that band around that joint in the tailpipe. It would look like a stiffener band

wow. just went to CVS/foodmart, then SaveMart, then an off-brand market, then food max. Nobody here carries jello brand fruit cups. and all the other fruit cups have some odd serrations pressed into them or the word "MOTTS" stamped into them.

Just as I was leaving I saw the foodmax brand applesauce cups - exactly the same thing. No serrations, or embossed letters. Perfect, 6 for 1.98

Hey Doc,

getting really picky here, what we are seeing there is actually the airframe tailpipe, then inside that you should see the actual engine exhaust stub pipe. Right?

Just checking, because thats the way its done on all other airframes I've worked on. Basically that outer unit goes over the engine's exhaust stub, and usually there is a gap between the 2, forming an eductor, which uses the engine's escaping exhaust gasses to pull air through the engine compartment through the gap.

is that true on the cobra?

That's correct Jan, It's refered to as the IR suppressor .. there is a vacuume effect as the Hot gas escapes the outer "FINS" suck cool air in to cool the exhaust temps ... works pretty well but the Jello cup I think will make it just cool to have around!

ok let the insanity begin. I am taking a little departure to work on the instrument panels. This is my pilots panel. Styrene over balsa, instruments are behind the panel, then little bezels go on top of the panel for that extra effect. Ok all you nit-pickers, the panel is BASED on a real cobra panel, but there are a few items missing that it wont have. The average guy, or 4th grade kid who shows up at the school that I fly at wont know the diff. I will paint the styrene flat black. Side panels will be the same. Going to go to hobby town to look through the train stuff for things that look like dials or toggle switches. Might just make my own out of stick styrene.
