broke ground with it this afternoon. I have never had so much trouble getting an engine dialed in as I have with this Hyper 50. OS engines never give me trouble at all.

well I was tired of being out in the sun fooling with it so I got this one short hover and then packed everything up. Lots of trimming to do, and need to increase gyro sensitivity. the tail was swinging all over the place.

Fran.. No idea on wt yet, but like Jan mentioned earlier.. She's very light.. No problem..

Jan.. let me know what you find on your gyro sensitivity setting change.. What were you running before? I'm running 50% on my 401..

my problem is my rotorhead speed. I need to get my head speed up, the engine was bogging under the blade angle.

absolute success tonight! adjusted the pitch curve down a little, now it spools up nice. My RX pack was low so I didnt want to push it but I got about 5 good minutes of 3 ft high hovering in.

Rock solid machine, no bad habits so far, very stable and NO vibration at all.

I had my high rate on 50% and low rate on 30%. at 50% its plenty nimble. I'm just getting an idea of what it needs for trim. Started with everything neutral as I could make it, trims at zero.

I had to hold a little right cyclic and the nose was wanting to rotate to the left slowly. I mostly worked on the pitch curve so I'd lift it up and just hold both sticks slightly right. Then after about 5 minutes of smiling my voltwatch was below half so I just killed it.

Good for you...that's the nitro right.

Just traded for some Vario mechanics to go in mine...Left hand rotation for the scale factor....

yes nitro, OS .50 hyper with tuned pipe inside the fuselage. It has a real nice tone to it, even with the cheesy exhaust exit tubing that I fabricated out of copper tubing

try it and see. I wouldnt think it's grossly overpowered. I'm still trying to get the perfect engine speed/blade pitch combo. I would think that you could de-tune the engine slightly and use less fuel, still having the umph to pull the rotor.

I havent weighed this cobra yet. At work we have a nice shipping scale and I was going to bring it and throw it on that scale, BUT I just dont feel like fielding all the questions and "hey lets see it fly" ....

With that being said am not used to feeling the weight of a big helicopter and in the back of my mind I was thinking "please let me never have to auto this thing". I had a Schluter .60 a long time ago but it didnt seem heavy to me. So I was very pleasantly surprised yesterday, after having shut it down and the blades were freewheeling I punched the collective and it lifted out of the grass a couple of inches. BIG smile, and lots of confidence now. Sounds like the Enzyte commercial.

anyway I am growing to love this big beast more every time I touch it

That tells me that your pitch settings are good (when she lifted off the ground)

Get you a plane fish scale (no NOT OFF OF A FISH...)...that should give you a fairly accurate weight.

LMK what she does weight. On my Vario; I'm going back to my old flybarless head (no assistance from any electronics either!!)

wow. flybarless
one thing I am going to do though . On the back of the fuselage where the dummy exhaust exits I am going to install a 2inch diameter cooling fan and run it off a rechargeable 9 volt battery. I want to promote airflow up from the bottom of the fuselage, over the engine and out the back.

I cant imagine there is much cooling air going through there right now.

The beauty of the Vario mechanics is that; coolong is pulled...

from the bottom of mechanics and pull air through the top

there is adequate cooling holes and slots in the bottom of the fuselage, in fact the entire bottom of the chassis is open to the air. So if you have a good cooling fan on your heli, then it should push it out the scale exhaust pipe if you leave it open.

I dont think I would block that pipe. Its 2 inches diameter and a great place for hot engine air to leave the fuselage
