e-Electric General Discussion > Ready to smash TP 610c charger!!!!!!

Hi Guys I'm having issues with my new charger and I have about had enough. I have a new Thunder Power 610C charger. I'm using it to charge 2 new 6s 5000mah lipos. I know you can safely charge at 1c which would be 5 amps and also understand that the charger is limited in wattage so I can only expect 3 amps or so. The problem is I cant seem to charge at more than 1 amp. If I put in anything higher it will start to charge and after about 15 seconds it faults. The message is usually an unbalanced cell. I getting sick of waiting almost 4 hours to charge these batterys. I did get a lipo to charge at 1.5 amps last night but the charger faulted near the end with a cell over volt error. Any help would be appreciated. Was thinking about picking up a external balancer (have been unsing the one built in to the charger).

I use this charger agree that it has some issues. Usually its the balancing board. On my charger, I have been thru 3 balancing boards. I found that the solder joints usually loosen up and cause the balancing faults "cell overcharge" ... "balancer undetected" etc...

Does your pack charge fine without the balancer (unplug and choose 'skip' ? If so, you know its the board.

What amperage power supply are you running?

If it seems like its the board, and you want to try and fix it, unplug it. Peel back the black sticky foam on the back side of the balancer. Have a look at the solder joints on the backside of the jacks that you have been using. Wiggle the jack around slightly while looking at the pins soldered to the board from underneath. If they move, hit em with a soldering iron and a little bit of solder. That saved mine for the time being.

If that don't work, send it back to TP!

I've used a TP-610C and it worked perfectly.

Check the imbalance between the cells in the pack. You might have a large enough imbalance that the charger is reducing the charge current. You can check the individual cell voltages on the charger.

I thought the balancer was inside and the board was just there to offer different plugs? I will check the solder. Is there a way to balance a pack without actually charging it?

Ok I just came home from flying and my weakest cell is 3.7v. I checked all the solder joints and cant find any loose. I set the charger to 3.5 amps 6s and started the charge. As soo as it reached 3.5 amps it faulted for a over charged cell.

Went to the local hobby shop and they think there is definatly a problem with the charger. Bought a Hyperion 606I. Brought it home and hooked it up. Started charging right away and in a half hour all cells were balanced the same. Am going to send the 610 in for repair. Thanks for all your help.

Hello,

Are there any balance taps that can be used to connect to the board, then connect the battery to them? I'm afraid after a period of time, that the ones on the board itself might end up coming loose, then having to buy a whole new board. I'm looking for the non thunder power ones for 3 and 6 cell.

Thanks

What is at issue is the balancing rate. I have this issue often with the 610 as well as the 1010. The balancer can only transfer so much and if it cannot keep up, then you get the out of balance warning. The only thing you can do is charge at a lower rate so that the imbalance does not build up as much. You might try connecting a separate balancer to balance the pack before you even start charging but that will only get you so far.

My solution was to buy the FMA Cellpro charger which has a high current balancing feature. It also balances by charging individual cells instead of just dumping the excess voltage out to resistance and heat. If they get too far out of balance, it stops charging until the charge-thru-balancer function evens the cells out.

I think there are other high balance current chargers out there, not sure which. I am very happy with the FMA cellpro units and they were inexpensive, but had to spend a lot for the balance adapters and extensions.

I have had people bring me what they thought were bad packs, because their chargers would fault out, and they charged up just fine on my charger.

keepin' it real

I had one of those. It went in the trash months ago. It really does not do well on the 6S packs.
