Hi All

Been playing with 3s1p 2300 A123 pack on the Beam with JGF 500th motor with 14t pinnion (my normal lipo setup). Done 11 flights now and the first few flights was bit dissapointing..

After upping cyclics a bit due to lower head speed as well as the fact that the a123 need some cycles to get going, the last 3 flights was a blast.

Loops and rolls, stall turns are easily possible. Tic tocs are possible if you are used to 50 nitro power.. need to nurse the collective ;-). FF etc no problem, small funnels, large funnels, inverted etc are all possible.

I uploaded all the Eagle tree results for the 1,2,3 and 10th cycle to

http://www.rchq.co.za/e107_plugins/...topic.php?55100 .
Much better quality jpg's.

If you not able to access link, please let me know.

Ave amp draw, 17 amps. Peak 34.. Flight time, ave 6 1/2 Fig 8, rolls etc. and about 7 - 7 1/2 hovering and slow fig 8's.
Ave recharge time 17 - 20 min at 3C. Can cope with 5C and thats about 12 min recharge.

I would not recommend it for 3D flying, but normal acro and sport flying its perfect!!

I'll try get some video's this weekend.

Cheers
L:

Thanks for the update!
Did you build your pack? I know there is a lot of info about building packs but what did you use for yours and do you have any pics?

Hi Mongenix

Yes, build own pack.. but ashamed to post pics.. soldering is @#$@.
I used the developer cells with the tabs and figure out you need very big (not necessary strong) soldering iron. The aluminum conducts heat very quickly and cools soldering iron down within 10 seconds to point that not melting solder anymore. So you have about 2 -3 seconds to get job done.

I should have build pack in a -= config.. ie, 2 next to each other then 1 in front to fit in canopy, but i did a |||, so have to remove the battery mount etc to get canopy on. (i'm flying without canopy for now)

Thanks for the pics.
Soldering batteries can be hard.
I used to run electric 10th scale on road cars and I have made many battery packs.
I will start looking for the A123 cells so I can build one, I am not a 3D'r yet but inverted hover, tail slides, rolls, loops and FF is my experience level.
I like to experiment and tinker. This looks like the perfect project for me.

I'm going to run 30 cycles on this pack, and then up the pinion by 1. Hope fully the pack will have been run in by then. it already have 6 % MORE power now than new...

Just went and checked

Running +13 degree - 12degrees
and 7 degrees cyclic

Dropped it to 12 and might up the cyclic to 8. Should help out my bad collective management.

I'm also running those cheapo 3D PRO 335mm carbons. best bang for buck out there.

With the slower head speeds, does the heli see-saw.
When I drop my head speeds, the heli rocks nose to tail like a see-saw even with new dampners. Yours does not?

Mongenix,

My headspeed prop still about 2500. feels like stock mini titan running 100% curve

I'll take video this weekend to show headspeed. I don't have measurement equipment yet, they in the post though.

Here vid of headspeed on the lipo.. i guess the a123 about 1000 rpm less if i do voltage calc's

I don't want to use my Beam as a Guinea pig so I hung a 3S A123 pack on my "Frankenheli". It's a T-Rex built out of a bunch of parts I had laying around. It has an Align 430L 3550kv motor with 12t pinion and Align 315 pro woodie blades. I hung the A123 pack under the HDX FSE frame between the landing gear so it would balance and ran it up in the living room. I got seven and a half minutes of hover before it really got too hard to handle. It definitely needs more head speed as it wallows quite a bit and is hard to keep steady. The battery pack has only been cycled about 3 times since I built it a year ago and it hasn't been touched in at least 6 months so it can only get better with use and more cycles. I think I'll step up to at least a 13t pinion and some 335 woodies next. This could end up being a good practice setup. No 3D of course but I can barely spell 3D much less fly it.

Thanks for getting this thread started karman.

Well.....this is really looking promising. I just recharged the A123 pack and changed to a 13t pinion. No blade change. Still has the 315 woodies. Much, much better with the extra head speed. Plus I got 8:45 of hovering before I noticed a drop in power and landed. This was under the ceiling fan in the living room so there was some minor cyclic and collective action at all times. I'm hoping to get out to the field tomorrow morning to try out the new setup but doubt if it'll happen. If I get it all sorted out in this Frankenheli then I'll probably go A123 in the Beam. All those A123 cells that I have will finally get some use.

Some More Pics

Ok, Eventually wrapped the pack mounted it correctley on my Beam E4

Removed the battery tray and the 1 front support the tray, left the back one otherwise the pack can move to far back and will hit the motor.

Also had to drill the canopy with 2 new mounting holes.. they about 1 cm more to back, but fits easy now. with original holes very very tight squeeze

Just put 16T on... report to follow

OK. 16T pinion, Head speed up only 200rpm. but heli feels much better. Might try 17T next, but going to fly it like this for bit.
