Is there anywhere I can take this thing to get repaired or fix it myself? I've looked on eBay for a replacement and they sell for... well.. a lot of money.... and I miss my A640..

In case anyone was wondering, it was my brother's wedding, I was the best man, and the camera was in my pocket. My cousin didn't know it was in my pocket, so I can't really blame him for it, although he's willing to pay for it.. but he lives in the Philippines and doesn't make a whole lot of coin in terms of USD, so I might only make him pay for half... if anything at all.

yea, tell me about it... but even if I have to dish out a couple hundred bucks for it, it's no big deal... my big bro's wedding and I'm damn proud of him... ain't no way I'm gonna let a busted camera tarnish memories like that.

A Canon A640 sells for $329.00 brand new from Amazon.com I would think the new Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD for $291.99 would be a good replacement and it goes underwater.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Sorry Patrick, but the D10 is a toy compared to an A640. If you do a comparison in DPReview you will see that the D10 lacks, for example, manual focus, shutter priority and aperture priority for a start. The only thing the D10 has over the A640 is a waterproof case.

And I don't believe he needs a waterproof camera anyway, his camera got wet due to some sort of misadventure....

Sorry, I though that the A640 was a toy as well. Its just an old point and shoot so I figured the other being waterproof would be good just in case he gets tossed in the pool again.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

So you must enlighten us about the superior equipment you use. I'm sure we could all learn from it.

My old A640 still serves me well despite haveing suffered it's own mishap. No more USB port. Broken. I have to pop the card to download. I wired a pair of wires to the shutter contacts(very hard-small parts there). Micro servo & microswitch to fire now. I won't part with it though. I still fly it despite having a Canon G9. I use a wide angle on the A640 and get a little wider than the G9 and I can throw a filter on it. The G9 is my favorite of course but the A640's still have their place. I just wish they'd drop the price of these older P & S cams.

Should've bought a sim. Got a bucket of used blades!

Just call it a wedding expense. A cab driver makes $5 a WEEK in the philippines. Having to pay for an A640 would be a financial disaster.

Was it salt water or fresh? If fresh it is worth sending it in to Canon Service. I've dunked a G9 and they were able to repair it. If it went in salt water it makes a good paper weight or kid's toy. As a toy its amazing the abuse it can take when it doesn't have to work anymore.

That's kinda what it is at this point... didn't wanna bother with sending it in to Canon.. I travel for work and have little to no time to worry about all that hooplah, and I'm currently bidding for one on eBay... if I don't get it, then I might just have to upgrade to a G9 or G10...

I know A640 is a discontinued model and was replaced with A650 but how could it sell for more now than when it was on production?
Is the price going up because there are less NIB out there?

Jeez, I paid $250 for mine when it was a brandnew. I might as well take a better care of my camera.
