Depends

If you cut the cross section of your rear frames off then it will be alot easier to remove the motor. If not its quite involved to get the motor in and out of the model. I would recommend doing a search about this here and if your frames are not cut you might want to go that route as other folks did to make motor service alot easier.

Check with Predator rep pilots like Billme or Imnxtc for a more detailed answer.

If you didn't do the front X brace mod, then the front four upper frame bolts, and the rear bottom frame to engine plate bolts..This way you don't have to fool with those rear upper frame bolts and spacers...Makes it much easier to do...You will have to allow the secondary coil to come off at the same time when you pull the frames off if you have the wire through the rear frame...

Strip the frame and do the mods. Part of leaning the Pready and checking the build. There will come a day when you have to do it so why wait?

Thanks for the input everyone. I've found the thread on the motor removal but that is for a carbon fiber frame is it the same for the Aluminum frame.

Yes my coil wire runs thru the frame.

You can do the cut in situ, I did. I used a dremel type tool with a small radius cutter...one of those stepped diamond coated cutters.

Gently cutting through the alloy of the X frame and the job was done very quickly without taking frames off etc...once the motor was out I tidied up the cuts I made....rounding off the sharp edges etc.

I have my motor out without disconnecting the upper assembly. I removed the frame that holds the fuel tank on the carb side. Then I cut out the top of the X frame and the motor came out with no problems. My question is do I need to remove all the x frame for this Mod?

Thank's to everyone for helping. I don't know what the original owner did when he assemblied this but 4 of the M3X35 socket caps screws were stripped had to use visegrips and a heat gun to get them loose. Now I'm going to have buy new ones before I go back together with it.

On good side now I can run wires for the kill switch better.

Anyone close to me got any M3X35 I can buy and pay shipping instead of getting from heliworld ia CA? 7 days ship time.

Ron's heliproz south should be able to get them to you with about 2-3 days ship time I would think... (they are in Corpus Christi Texas) They ship everything in stock the day you order.
Hope this helps, waiting for parts is a bummer..

There might be some disagreement here, but I dont bother with locktite on a lot of the screws that hold the frames together...maybe a tiny bit on the build and thats enough.

I have found locktite to be a p i the axx to remove...and I would suspect that said previous owner might have had this problem....or even overtorqued the screws in the first place.

Its a good mod though, I was agonizing over how to get the motor out without ripping the frames apart...glad I posted here

If you use the blue version not the red if gives enough of a lock to prevent most screws from shaking loose but is quite easy to remove the screws. Neither one, red or blue should cause the hex to round off though if you are using the proper hex wrench. Flat head screws do not require loctite. Because of their geometry flat heads will not come loose so loctite will only make removal a bear.

Ron's heliproz package came today. Now that's some fast shipping. Got windshield cut out and fitted, Removed old paint off canopy and going to give a try to my first airbrushing job. Still waiting for one piece for the generator setup and she be going back together. I think I'm having more fun working on it then I'll have flying it for the first time. Will be posting pics in my gallery soon.

As for the stripped heads looks like a incorrect size allen head was used to try and remove them at one time and there was a large amount of locktight on the bushing causing the problem (RED) I use Blue.

Back together

Got the predator back together. The Jewel generator is installed. The Killerbee is installed. and the Voltmagic. Also airbrushed the canopy and installed the windsheild. Going to tell you Airbrushing is harder than it looks. But I'm happy with the way it turned out for my very first time picking up an airbrush. Pics of before and after are in my gallery. Please comment on how it looks. Good or Bad.

Fired the heli up in the backyard today and everything is working great the generator is working greatand the kill switch works off the transmitter and kill the motor with low voltage.

Nice!

You transfored that fisheye canopy to something alot better looking and easier to see. Good work, now go and enjoy!

I put in about 3 hours airtime with my gassers today at the Rhode Island baloon festival. Had to dodge some planks thankfully made it home in one piece!

Jeff,

Nice design on the canopy. Say, where is the Jewel generator? It's not sticking up above the start shaft?

I hope you know that you'll have to cut the canopy top to fit the jewel in. If you found a different way to do it please share.

Thanks,

This hobby is WAY too expensive!!

jewel generator

It is mounted under the canopy there is a 1/4-1/2" gap between the top of the jewel and the bottom of the canopy. I thought the same thing and almost cut it out then fitted the canopy and it cleared. If you need pics of it please let me know.

Mounting

In the case of the Predator the Jewel fits right inside the canopy with no cutting needed. This is normal and has always been this way.

In the Spectra, you'll need to cut the canopy top curve some more to make room for the generator.
