Finally my Spectra is seeing some action again. After almost a year of 100% dedication to the rebuild of my house, I have now been able to start flying again. Just starting to find time, now and then, to have some fun between work and many, many things still left to do in the house.

Not only the Spectra is getting some air time, but so is T-Rex.

The house has a kind of large yard, plenty of space to fly, so I no longer need to drive to other towns in search of flying fields. I can now fly (yes, even the Spectra!) at home. How cool is that?

In order to get some added clearance from the tail rotor to the grass, I thought it was a good idea to get Minair's "tuf-strut", with which the Spectra stands a bit taller. The struts themselves are not only larger, but do seem stronger. The aluminum skids are also considerably longer, and larger diameter.

But... After only 10 flights with the new struts/skids, the front part of the left skid broke off in mid-air.

My heart skipped a beat as I saw a shinny thing dropping off the heli (thougt it was a rotor blade), then in the next few seconds of confusion I realized the helicopter was still under control. It took a while to realize that it was part of the skid that had fallen.

The image below is a front view of the failed skid. Maybe some of you with metallurgically-trained eyes can identify what happened. The skids had never crashed or otherwise landed hard (had only 10 flights). I do recall it was a pretty tight fit in the strut, maybe it was being stressed a lot. Maybe the long skid ahead of the strut was allowed to resonate to failure. The Spectra runs smoothly, everything is still original after 115 flights, except for the struts/skids, of course, and a new rudder servo installed a few months ago.

What an odd flight.

metal fatigue although all I can see is the photo looks like the two dark spots( could be shadows) were cracked some time earlier and fatigue continued until it broke.

I had one of the gear bushings fall off mine just a few night ago so I know how you feel when you see something fall off. mine broke the bolt head.

Glad you saved it

Any pics to post?

What's the difference between Tuff Struts I, II and III? All are listed on the MA site, but no pics are available.

thank god there are 3 more holding the skids on so no damage.

I have been running the white skids on both the Spectra G and the Ion X2 they are tougher than the earlier black gear. Im not sure if they are the tough-strut or not but here is a pic of the ones I have.

I'll try to put some pics online comparing the Tuff Struts to the stock Spectra ones. In the meantime, I can give you some measurements:

- Skid tread (skid-to-skid) unchanged on the Tuff Struts at about 260mm.
- Skid length: about 330mm on the stock, about 430mm on Tuff Struts.
- Strut Width: about 20mm on the stock, 23.5mm on the Tuff Strut.
- Thickness: from 6.3 to 7.8mm on stock, 6.8 to 7.13 on Tuff Strut.
- Bottom of baseplate ground clearance: 49.6mm on stock, 72.8mm on Tuff Strut. Spectra sits just short of an inch higher on the Tuff Struts than on the stock gear.

It seems that the set I got is the -II. Originally, I ordered (type II) from MinAir, but they explained that I must order from their Brazilian distributor (they can't sell direct when having a distributor in a country). Fair enough. But from then on, email communication with the local distributor was kind of informal, I can't really say for sure if they sent me type I, II or III. FWIW, there is an "MAS" (whatever that means) molded in relief, on the center of each white nylon strut.

I really wanted the black type, but it was not in stock. No big deal.

Bruno

You should get and install the rubber landing gear isolators. They will dampen vibrations on the landing gear and God forbid should you crash they will give way and save your CF plate and/or maybe even the skids.

I get them from QWW and use them on both of my birds. If you want me to pickup a set for you and mail it to Brazil let me know. I can also send you a replacement strut if you need it.

Thanks for the measurements Bruno, they help to better picture it in my mind. Whenever you get a chance to post pics is fine.

Just look at my gallery. The 1005 sports the tuff struts, the Spectra the standard ones.

I did a search

And ended up with HHI2004. Those look like the JR dampeners though same diameter not drum shaped like the ones I'm using now and like better than the JR's. I'd call Irwin in the AM and just tell him you want the dampeners that Raja uses and he'll know which ones. I did sent him a PM to ask about the part number but he's not online probably in bed...!

Raja

I see now. I've looked at your gallery before and didn't really take notice. They are a bit taller.

I'll be calling MA on Mon. I like a little more distance between the tail rotor and ground. I have the super tall struts on my Pred and have never grounded the tail.

Thanks.

How is the landing gear held into the strut? Setscrew? Did you scratch the surface of the landing gear with the setscrew when you twisted it in? Otherwise I vote for a manufacturing defect.

The part number is correct HHI2004

Irwin PM'd me back today and said he will change the picture of the dampeners to the right one today.

No, Ace, this version of the landing gear does not use setscrews to secure the aluminum skids. They are held in position by the tight fit.

Well then you got my vote. It should have bent and even kinked before breaking.

Maybe the fit was too tight and it was damaged installing it?

However it was damaged from the look of the metal it cracked and failed instead of bending.
