It's been a year or so since I've researched AP stuff on RunRyder so excuse my ignorance.

What is currently the best downlink system to use if you are on a Spektrum 2.4ghz flight radio and a 72 mhz gimbal radio?

900mhz? 5.8ghz? 5.3ghz?

Also, why cant one use 2.4ghz for both systems? Is it any different than flying with dozens of other 2.4ghz aircraft nearby? Cant you just turn on the flight system first to "lock" it in then wait a minute later then turn on the downlink system?

No, you can't... Ill give you the quick version, the video bleeds RF all over the 2.4 Ghz radio spektrum. You should do a search and you will find ton's of information on this as it has been discussed to death several times over.

+1 for what Rappy said. Someone once told me if you think about it like standing with your buddy next to a loud speaker at a concert. Your buddy is your 2.4 receiver system and the loud speaker the downlink. Yeah your buddy can still talk but you'll never hear him over the loud speaker.

Go for the 900Mhz. It might pay to get an RF low pass filter for the 900Mhz tx antenna though.

Thanks Rappy and Hellsiege!

Doesn't 900mhz require a HAM radio license?

But (catch22) isn't it illegal to use a HAM licence for commercial purposes?

yes that is also correct. However it's a grey area for downlinks, as technically you are not using the dowlink to directly generate income. In other words, your not selling advertising or selling air time.

What would happen if I go through a 2.4ghz wireless video beam while doing AP? Will it lock my Rx? I've been flying 35mhz for 5 years and had a couple of glitches in all this time.
I've been considering switching to 2.4 but would it be less secure to fly due to the large amount of 2.4ghz video signals out there?

Unless you were flying 2 feet away from a 2.4Ghz source, you have nothing to worry about. 2.4Ghz radio lockouts are pretty rare compared to 72Mhz. 35Mhz may be a different story as I have not had any experience with that band being in the US.
