I currently have 6 helicopters and every one of them flies completely different. I never really like the idea of having more than one of the exact same helicopters. I like a nice variety.
Here is the current fleet:
T-Rex 500CF
T-Rex 600ESP
T-Rex 600 Nitro Pro
JR Vibe 50
JR Vibe 90
Miniature Aircraft Spectra G

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

How does one only own and fly 1 Helicopter?

Seriously....how can you possibly get by with only one heli?

I freak out if I have less than 6 or 7 flying machines at any one time..........

This makes me laugh....

You should have some other hobbies.

I have 2 helis.... a 450 and 600N. It feels like I have only 1 heli (as I hate the 450 compared to the 600.) If I crash (both) and cant fly....I move on to my next hobby. I fly on the weekends so whats the max downtime? 1wk at the most? It really ain't the end of the world.

I'm not knockin' you at all for havin' lots of helis...If I had the money, I would own every heli. But, to answer your question, thats how us with few helis get buy.

T-Rex 450 SE V2 , T-Rex 600 NSP, Stryker F27 C....Yea, it's a plank.

I own 1 and use my money to keep about 3-4 full crash kits on hand. The only way I would buy another is to turn it into a scale.

Trex 600N/hyper 50/MP5, Revmax,Spartan DS760/JR DS8900G,3 Align DS610's.

I agree with you that you can switch to a different hobby. Sometimes it is not of the parts availability, but the weather cooperation. So you think you have the heli down for one week. Once you have everythng fixed, but the weather sucks unfortunately, and you get to wait for a few more days until the sky clears up. You will not run into this kind of prolonged waiting if you have a backup heli.

Other Hobbies:)

I have plenty of other hobbies as well..Trust me...Unfortunately for us Heli guys in the Northeast we only get like 3 months a year that are even decent weather to fly...andso far this season we have been so soaked with rain that flying time is at an all time low...

When I do get out it means taking everything I have and flying thehell out of it...if I lived somewhere nice and warm all year I'm sure my attitude would be quite different

I'm jealous of all you bastards that get good weather year round

Lately, I've been flying with only one heli. I've had more at once but the others sit as spares until I have an accident. I agree with everyone emplying that you learn more if you dedicate yourself with one because you have to readjust if you jump around do to the different flight characteristics. After I bought my 700, I sold everything else. The pucker factor is definately there... but I deal with it by keeping it high. I want to get an Emachine.. like the 500, then I'll be set.

Hey....sometimes it gets real cold here (like 50 deg...Burrrr!) Not only that, it rains sometimes too!

J/K.....I'm from CT so I feel your pain.

Move out to the Bay area.....we need more people (I hate it.)

Now that I think about it, most of my hobbies depend on the weather.

T-Rex 450 SE V2 , T-Rex 600 NSP, Stryker F27 C....Yea, it's a plank.

I have settled on the perfect fleet FOR ME for now. 1 500E - for flights at the park, 2 50's for fanging fearlessly, 1 90 for scaring the women and children with.

ONE heli for what they call a "beater" heli.
The other helis are more for as reserve, or collection, or just for flying at special events. But really, you get carried away buying more and more helis just because your friend has a NEW one.

Im what I consider a budget flyer. I tried it for some time with one heli, but its very hard to get good stick time in with one heli. ON the other hand there is no way I can afford 6 or more helis, especially of different brands.
So this has been my stratagy, My first heli was a Hawk Sport. I have been very happy with it. I tried a Jr Voyager, Trex 450XL, Concept 30 but the Hawk just hung in there. So right wrong or whatever, I choose to stay with Century. I have since purchased a Raven 50 and upgraded the Hawk to all Raven parts, except the motor and control system (Hawk is CCPMm). And invested in an extensive parts inventory. Now I have one parts inventory that covers 2 Helis. Then I bought a used Logo 10. No chance I leaving Mikado behind me now, I just love the thing. I have been building the LOGO parts inventory slow but sure. My next buy will be a L500, not sure how many parts will cross over but many will. Then I'll have 2 inventories covering 4 Helis.
That will be the fleet.
Ill say this, since having 3 helis RTF and flying them everyday, my flight skills have really advanced at a much faster pace. On the occasion, which is frequent, I crash, I am still able to get out there on the sticks. And as happened this week, when I crash 2 helis in 2 days, I can still get on the sticks. The other advantage is that I am never in a rush to get parts, can always buy enough to get free shipping, wait for sales, and take my good time on the rebuild.
SO at he end of the day, for me, I think 4 helis is gonna be the amount. A good balance of flight time potential, cost, and quality. Perhaps not too varied and therefor limited exposure to new/other stuff but we all have our limitations.....

The good ole times are now ,Hawk, Raven, Raven NX, Logo 10

I have found that after owning numerous helis, from 450 through to 90, my flying really did not improve until i decided to stick with one type/size of heli. I don't mean learning to fly i mean really pushing the heli and learning more of the agressive styles. By flying one heli type, in my case 2 x T-Rex 600n's, identical setups, you know how it will fly and therefore you can concentrate on the new stuff. Two heli's and spares are more than enough to keep you flying, put your extra cash into fuel

+1 2 Helis same kind + Spares. And ones that is easy to fix. Not too complicated. Kasama maybe on that side. Not sure how it will standup in a crash.

No one mentioned competition flying yet.
I think that if you fly competition very seriously then having at least two helis would be necessary. If one breaks down during the competition you do not want to drop out of competition.

I'm not in very serious competition and for me one is sufficient. If it really breaks I'm out of the air for two weeks. But I have other hobbies Having one also maximizes the utility of that one heli - I can't imagine you will get over 1000 flights on a heli if you have 20 of them.

At the beginning of my heli era, I had two identical HIROBO EVO 50s, my mentality was exactly that one, one brand, one set of parts, one radio , one everything.

Although I always figure out that one heli was not enough and therefore I bought two of the same !

What I found out is that no two helis fly the same ! it does not matter if they are same brand, same model, same servos, same gyros, same engines, etc !!!

It is true one heli only gives you a chance not to adjust to others but crashing in this hobby is so common, you bearly can advance without stick time !

I understand the logic behind it but it simple does not work for me, sorry !

Saludos desde Los Cabos !!

I used to have a few helis but now I just have one. More heli more issues, just keeping one in the air is enough work for me.

I just fly one that have lowest price on parts, at least the crashes are cheap.

I actually have two of the same heli, I keep one as ARF, just transfer the electronics.
