I was flying during an overcast day with a cold front coming through. Dropped down below the tree line and the heli went inverted. Tried to roll it back over from inverted and it rolled inverted a 2nd time. I disabled the AP2000i (setup on a switch) and was able to roll it back over once more, that was when I lost orientation and the heli went in. First off, I should not of been flying that day due to the overcast conditions as well as a cold front coming in. However, I have had the AP2000i react to tree lines where the horizon could not be seen. Gain was around 35 to 40%. I have had zero issues with the Helicommand 3A. As far as I'm concerned having to remember when to turn on and turn off the stabilization when ducking below trees is something I really don't want to deal with, I have enough to deal with (setting up the shot, communication with camera operator, dealing with clients, etc) than to worry about what the stabilization is doing.

The AP2000i is a good piece of hardware if you use it correctly, however like I said above its not suited for my application.

I have the gain on the AP2000i set to about 15%, the only day I had a problem with it was when it was still kind of foggy out. I might bump it up a little higher for really windy days. With the gain set so low it still stabilizes fantastic and allows me to fly it like a regular helicopter. I fly around trees all the time, even with the low evening sun. At 15%-20% it won't 'flip over' but slightly lean away from the object and is easily corrected with a little stick input. Gain is set to a slider on the left side of the 9303, so it is easily adjusted to that days conditions.

With my 700 size heli (now sold) at one time drifted to far horizontally where the tail was no longer visible. Slowly rotating I asked the camera man when it was pointed toward us, slightly raised the gain and pushed forward until it was close enough I could fly it again. With the gain at 50% or more it starts to feel more like a coaxial so you'll need to hold the stick in the direction of flight.

I never retrim, while the few seconds you'll be flying to 'get the shot' it's really not that hard to use the sticks to fly. With a low gain, the changing scenery really has no sudden or unexpected results.

You should come down and fly with us sometime as a guest (of course you have to have AMA). You can have a look at my AP setup and I can help you with all the questions you have.
