OK, I know how to use the search feature but I thought it would be nice to have all this information in one place. All the information i find is scattered about and it makes it hard to keep it all straight in my head...

What types of Stabilization units are available out there? I hear a lot about helicommand, What about FMA, are there any others? I would like to get opinions and applications for each system. Pros and cons would be good too, and also maybe some links to where to buy.

Thanks

Whats your budget/price range?
Do you want Altitude and position hold or just "self leveling" stabilization.

For the money the Helicommand (HC3A and Rigid) are the best bang for the buck.

The spartan ap2000i is a good one.
And has a little more reasonable cost also.

Awesome guys, thanks for the quick reply. For myself Im looking for just cyclic stabilization and I am on a budget.

BUT ... for this particular thread anything goes. I was just wanting to get peoples personal opinions on the systems they use and put them all in one place thats easy to find. Just since I posted this I have learned of one system I had never even heard of.

If you list a system, add a price range, where to buy, applications, pros-cons, and maybe just a short review of your use of the system.

Thanks for all the good info

I use the spartan 2000API, the old FMA and the new FMA Co-pilot.
The problem is if you calibrate it, and it uses the infered sensors. When you move the heli 180 degree then you will have to re trim the heli. In mountian areas the infered sensors may have trouble reading the horizon and re trimming may be more of an issue. Not a big deal and for the price they work great.
Helicommand does not have this issue but I see a lot of programming questions where people have difficulty setting up the Helicommand.
One half dozen or the other, for the price if you are just getting started the Spartan and FMA are both pretty good.

Long term, you would probably be better off with the DJI, just hard to part with the $$$$

Helicommand does not have this issue

With HeliCommand you do need to re-autotrim if you change the helicopter's orientation for a good hover.

Keep that info rolling in.

Here is a question I have been meaning to post:

So these systems "see" the horizon? Does that require you to be in a big field, or fly above the tree level before the system can stabilize??

Here is my issue, I live just north of houston TX... Its pretty wooded here and its hard to find a flying site that is totally clear over an acre or 2 (my immediate area). Is there a particular system that works better than the other in these conditions?

ALSO, Am I missing something???? I see the Spartan for like $200, Is that right? I know it says it also needs the infared sensor (sold seprate) but i dont see that piece or the price for it. Still $200 for the main part seems cheap. I like bargains and low prices but sometimes when you buy something cheap... well you get something cheap you know. is that the case???

The Spartan uses the IR sensor sold by FMA, which costs about $40 I think.

Sure a stabiliser relying on infrared signals will be affected by close up obstacles, but the effect is less than you would think, and just manifests itself in a tendency for the heli to lean away a bit from the obstacle. Objects more than about 30 feet away have only a marginal effect. If you want to hover near something, you just adjust the trim to compensate for the heli's slight tendency to move away from it. It is really no big deal.

Here's a direct link to the Copilot II. I use the AP2000i. There not as sensitive to surroundings if you keep the gain turned down.

The Spartan with the Infrared sensor will have issues with trees (don't ask how I know this) while the Helicommand 3A will not. Where do you fly at? I fly out at Houston Sports Flyers off of airtex on I45.

Dale, how close were the trees and what was the gain setting? We had no problems is there was 20 feet or more clearance to the tree and gain was under 30% (of course taking off with gain off is always an option, increasing gain once over the trees)
