I consider a heli a total when its cheaper to buy a new kit than it is to buy the parts to fix it.

I still repair it of course but have parts left over from the kit.

How can you do that?

If I bought a new kit I'd build that as a new helicopter instead of take parts from it to repair the old one and probably still buy the parts needed to repair the broken one in essence ending up with two helicopters...!

I guess I just about got "totaled" when the planker slammed me out of the air as I had to spend about $750 in repair parts but like Justin said I replaced all the broken parts and ended up with a "new" helicopter.

so if its cheaper to buy a new kit to get the parts you needed separately would you still pay more to buy the individual parts??

Sorry my friend but Im not going along with this one

In theory it makes sense

But in real life in lets see my worst crashes were two mid-airs one with the 1005 and one with the Spectra and the 1005 cost about $850 to fix including the electronics and the Spectra cost about $750 to fix - neither as much as a whole new kit of about 1K.

So I don't think you can crash and cause $1k in parts to repair the heli, hard to get that much damage unless you light it on fire I guess!

I can see the logic in this.

I got to agree with Talegunner Raga. Sell off the parts that didn't get broken and the new kit will cost you less. I also don't believe that a crashed heli with new parts will ever be a new heli especially if the heli has had 100+ flights.

500 bucks! The bent crank on that Hanson has to cost half that plus all the shipping. With the damage you described, I don't see how you will be under a grand.

Good luck my friend.

I wouldn't buy broken parts off someone else's crashed Spectra-G, and I doubt anyone else would either.

I had estimated the cost at $1000 also. Those doors looked really heavy, though. I bet another helicopter would have suffered much, much more damage.

Cost

$1000 for repairs seems out of reach. I bought about $200 from Minair in parts including the head center piece (remember the prices of parts did go down recently) now just waiting on the Hanson repairs. Granted I didn't buy a new boom or blades, but even if I did just add another $150 I can still possibly be around $600 worst case.

Not sure what I should charge for my labor for repairs. So far I've invested 3 hours to repair the 1005 minor damage and disassemble the Spectra G.

Last time I bought $200 worth of parts from MA, I didn't get much. The list price for the Tempest head on the MA website (last time I looked) was near $450. Repair parts from MA are EXPENSIVE.

I still don't know how the heck the crankshaft got bent. That must have been one heck of a collision.

Parts

I didn't buy the whole head with the grips, thrust bearings etc. -- I just bought the center piece.

In any case the crankshaft bent because the lower frames bent from the sideways push on the head by the doors from the top falling down. When the A frames bent, the clutch gap to fan which should be even all around closed and one end and pushed the crankshaft to the side this bending it. All these doors coming down full swing had some weight to them. That's why I bought a new head center piece as I didn't want to trust that it was bent and find that out later. I also got a main shaft for the same reason, I need to pull the original out and roll it on the table to be sure.

Did you buy that 2nd hand Spectra-g here from a guy in the classifieds? I thought he said it was going to Texas and I presumed it meant you bought it. That was a really good price!

His price was incredible, but no I didn't buy it from him. Retrospectively, I guess I should have jumped at that opportunity. "You snooze, you loose."

I'm still waiting on the G270.

Raja's not going to sell any broken parts to anyone. He is the most honest guy on this forum. Anybody that knows him would buy anything from him, with or without scratches.

When you buy something used on this forum or any other forum you haven't a clue what has happened in the past regardless of what it looks like. So you try to buy from people you trust or shoot craps.

Legally, you can't charge anything because it doesn't cost you anything. You would have to pay someone else to repair the heli and then it could be part of the claim.

Flyable again

I got my Spectra up in the air yesterday afternoon. Put the stock 231 in it that I had laying around as a spare and went out to the field. A couple of tracking turns on the links and she was good. Full power climbout too much top end pitch on positive and too little on negative, so I turned both links in 3 turns and it balanced out. 231 making some good power climbing well, not much worse than my G26, its just broken in so in the peak of its performance so to speak. Also noticed the increased gas mileage, don't really need a 16oz tank with the 231, I think I can get away with a 14oz easy for a 15 minute flight. Anyway its temporary for now until I get my Hanson G26 back from Al.

Some issues tough, tail rotor seems to be drifting left all the time needs about 7 clicks in heading hold to hold steady on a 611 gyro. Unusual, not sure what that is at the moment. Also when I flip it around it sometimes seems to gyrate more than I think or expect. Some slop in the links could be the cause, or the boom is not stiff enough. I need to get some more head parts and take out the slop there and see what goes from there.

The door that hit the heli has a chunk of wood missing from it at the edge. The painter who stained all the doors told the contractor he needs to get another one as its too damaged to make look good. Works for me as I don't want a patched door anyways.

Thanks Acebird for the kind words!

There isn't much difference in the gearing bill

I run my 1005 at 6.92, and my spectra is at 7.08. What do you like best, 6.77?

I too would like to know what people like the best and with what engine & headspeed

Is 6.77 the lowest stock made gear ratio for the spectra G ?

what gear part # and mount plates are needed? modes to the jewel mount?

6.7 helps the engine run smoother near 0 pitch..These engines want a certain amount of back pressure at all times...

If you can't get the ratio, then you have to run a little slower, and at the same time add pitch around hover to make it so...After you do that, you don't want to loose that same resistance on the engine when you go to idleup 1, so you match the same pitch change as in normal, and mirror it to low stick..Its best to hover inverted to do it right..
You end up with a slight reverse "S" type curve..It also makes the heli more responsive at center stick on collective..

Most do this just in normal, and leave idle up at default...The heli may look smooth, but its quivering -+ 3 degs around 0....Some gov can handle it, but you still quiver...

As I have said before, take a perfectly tune chainsaw, and run it in the air, and see how much it quivers ...Put a load on it, and smooths right on out...
