Ok, so I've got my G231 sat here and I read a lot about various oils in the States, but which oils are you guys in the UK using for running in and after that for every day use?

Try Honda HP2 2 stroke oil. I have used it for about 14 years with nothing but great results.I say great because I've never had a bearing/ring/scuff/heat failure.I broke my 230 in my Vario Bell 47 G3 with it and its running great. Just my two cents worth.

Oils

Any of the above, make sure its pre-mix,most bike dealers keep the stuff.I use silkolene across 5 gassers at 50.1(all run in)with no problems.A good quality chainsaw oil also works well.

Ratio

I must admit i ran all my motors in on synthetic at 35.1,a long job ,but someone has to do itThink most run in at this mix or thereabouts,up to you if you want to run in faster on a good quality mineral oil, then change to fully synthetic.Pays to stick with one good oil when you choose one as well.

So there are obviously a lot of good oils. If given the choice between Silkolene PRO 2 SX:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-811-sil...engine-oil.aspx

And
Castrol Power 1 TTS 2T

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-747-cas...engine-oil.aspx

Is there much to choose or both as good as each other? Interesting to note the Castrol is nearly £5.00 cheaper than the equivalant Silkolene

Can they both be used for running in?

Oils

Truth is i expect they are pretty equal,,you could use Castrol TT for run in and Castrol TTS thereafter .I found that Silkolene stains the fuel tanks a brown colour, but the engines are still like new inside.

Both excellent oils, The silkolene my friend is using in his robbe gasser seems very clean burning and he has no probs with it.
However it is expensive. The TTs offers a good quality oil at the right price, so that is one I would choose.

Also factor in just how much of the oil your going to use over the next 12 months or so, a litre of 2 stroke oil represents a hell of a lot of flying for a helicopter.

Both oils in fact any oil can be used for running in

Good luck

I'm not sure , but a clubmate used to fly microlights , I think that they had Rotax engines , and Castrol TTS was one of only two recommended oils . So if it's good enough when your butt is on the line , it's good enough for my models .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

We use Amsoil Synthetic Saber PROFESSIONAL, mixed at @95:1 with standard unleaded. It can be purchased from:
http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk...troke_oils.html

A 1l bottle is about £13.00, cheap when you consider the ratios it should be used at.

I will leave it up to you as to whether you run it as intended, all I can say is we've never wrecked an engine and they run smoother and cooler than lesser oils at the 40:1 ratios.

No model shop or engine supplier is ever going to tell you to do this as they will invalidate your engine warranty, which may give rise to litigation.

We don't mess around with running in or different ratios for running in. Helicopter gasser engines aren't revving high enough to worry about it. We do run them on the richer side for about forty minutes and then just dial them in. Our engines take a good gallon of fuel before they come really good but that is normal. We change the piston rings after every 35-40 hours, we used to change them at 30 but it proved unnecessary.

One of our helicopters did 120 hours in Italy with a client without any maintenance. For various reasons that engine was knackered but it wasn't damaged by the oil.

95:1 was an arbitrary original mix that sort of stuck, it was me erring on the side of caution, at the time 100:1 seemed mad.

There I was all set to grab a bottle of Silkolene PRO 2 SX and then some one mentions Amsoil again It seems that this is an extremely good oil too. Anyone else using it got experience they could share?

Like the above post I have seen a fair few vario helicopters running on amsoil at 100:1 as per the instructions. THe heli's don't seem to suffer from lack of oil problems.
The 100:1 idea was brought about by the use of 2 stroke oil in marine and lake engines where the lesser ratios would help the environmental issues of pollution. Therefore amsoil developed the 100:1 ratio 2 stroke oils. Like the previous post I stuck to a lower ratio as I was too scared to go to 100:1. I choose 50:1 and the engine ran smooth and cool for my applications, who knows I was probably wasting oil I don't know but at least I wasn't worrying about a lack of oil whilst flying.
As gasoline is the cooling force in the fuel mix having more of the gas to oil would probably have promoted a cooler running still, One day I might get the chance to try it again and find out.

Good luck
