Piro Funnels...

this is a tricky move

some guys can do them effortlessly though....once you learn the timing of the move it's actually not that hard..

The stick movements are basically a swirling of the cyclic stick just like a piro flip...but only a VERY small amount while you are pirouetting...

It took me a long time to teach myself how to do this move...

if you can do funnels the first thing to practice is 4 point funnels....tail down/nose first(hurricane)/nose down/tail first(backwards Hurricane)...try rotating the heli to the 4 points during a funnel...when you get good at that then you may be ready to try the piro funnel...

The ONLY way I was able to learn this move was to start by correcting the move in 1 spot of the helis rotation...I learned by doing a counterclockwise inverted funnel...so I began by doing an inverted Counterclockwise funnel...then begin pirouetting (nose rotating clockwise) and then when the nose was pointed to the ground I would add a pointed and quick cyclic input to get the "funnel" shape..(stick input at the 2 O'clock position))....after a while you can easily start to notice that if you corect in that same spot every time you have the ability to steer the heli around pretty well....

after you have mastered that you will start to just know the inputs to correct the move in other positions...as you get better you will eventually end up with the "stir" that everyone talks about...when you master the stir you will be able to steer the heli around so well you can do figure 8 piro funnels and tight funnels no prob...

YEAH...ME too

I can do them ...well...kind of

For some reason I cannot fully understand that move though so I cannot do them consistently....

After Piro tic tocs comes the piro loop

That's next

you kidding right?
I feel that piro tictocs are much harder than the piro loop or even the piro globe!

Piro loop...

so whats the trick with the piro loop?

the only time I ever do them is when they get done accidentally...but I never know what the stick input is for it

Apart from piro 8s, the piro loop is the precursor to all things piro, and the beginnings of true 3d flight.
For me, 8s are the most important figure to nail both CW and CCW as this ultimately provides all the solutions to every piro manouver given that they are all derivatives... piro snake, anoconda, S, chaos, rainbow revrsals and so on. Some manouvers such as rainbows or tick tocs w/wo reversals present a very different set of challenges. However in all fairness, each is afflicted in a different way to various stumbling blocks for a given manouver.

I actually crashed today doing piro funnels! I have entered my first competition and dont have much time to practice as im going to the masters (to watch) and the comp is about a week after, I found my self practicing the most difficult manuevers I can do, the piro funnel being one of them. I now realise that although doing well in a competition would be fantastic it takes away the fun and piles on the stress!!

Piro Loop

Learning the piro loop helped me, more than anything else, to be able to do decent piro flips, piro funels, and piro 8s.

It is hard, for me, to teach someone how to do these moves with words so it might be easier to find a video with stick movements so you can see with your own eyes. I know it would be easier for me. In any event, here goes.

In any piro move, if you want to impart a constant input on the rotor disk in a givin direction(like you would in a loop, you pull back) you want to match the rate of the cyclic stir to the rate of the piro(for every 360 piro of helicopter you should do a 360 degree stir of cyclic stick). The loop for me is the easiest way to see this clearly.

when you piro counter clockwise, you stir the cyclic clockwise and vice versa.

So im just going to give an example of a right side up, foward flight loop with one counter-clockwise piro during the loop. Start with back elevator and keep constant left rudder throught the loop, Instantly start your cyclic stir clockwise when you add rudder. when the helicopter is 1/4 finished with the loop the helicopter should have done 1/4 piro and you should now have the cyclic stick to the left. and it keeps going like that. when the helicopter is at the top of the look you should be flying backwards and inverted and pushing foward on the cyclic. when it is 3/4 through the look, the heli should have done 3/4 piro and the cyclic should be to the right. when the loop is over you let off the rudder input and the heli is flying foward.

and obviously you have to manage the collective just as you would in any other loop. a lot, then a little, then a lot.

hope this helped... probly didn't, but hope it did.

i found piro loops to be easier inverted. i do not know why. but it definatly seemed to follow through better then transition to upright
