I finally got my paint yesterday. A friend has a spray gun and I had talked to him about helping me paint it. Sounded like no big deal.

Well, come to find out, this stuff is not like ordinary automotive paint and is pretty nasty. From what I've read, there is no safe mask and you must use a forced air respirator. Is this really true? No way am I going to spend $300+ for one of those.

No idea how I'm going to get this painted now. Any tips or ideas on what I can do?

WARNING!!!! That stuff will kill you if you do not use the proper equipment. You even have to have the proper paint booth with the proper exhaust filters so you don't kill other people.

I sent mark spies an e-mail. I'm still getting conflicting information. We'll be painting in the yard so we won't be anywhere enclosed.

Anyone else have any information.

Because of the harnder used in the paint, it will fill lung cells if breathed in. They do not clean themselves out of this stuff. Also, Imron is a single stage paint, not the most user friendly paint out there. Chances are you will end up with a bug filled paint job painting it outside.

I have not sprayed Imron but I have sprayed 2K clears (yay for isocyanates!) and yes they are dangerous if you do not take precautions. BUT there is no need to over react and say it will kill everyone.

Use a high quality respirator rated for organic vapors, and one that covers your eyes if possible. Or get separate eye protection. Swimming goggles if you want to be cheap Try not to get the paint or any 2K clear on your skin, wear gloves if needed.

In most hobby applications you probably would not even spray a gallon of the stuff over the course of a year, so while you should definitely take precautions you do not need to freak out and claim it will kill everyone. If painting is your 9 to 5 then yes you should get professional gear... but that is probably not the case.

Aaron, if i knew you were going with Imron i would have advised you to use something more user friendly and less expensive. most paint stores can match the colors you need with any paint. usually you can use fairly inexpensive paints and an automotve clearcoat to achieve good results. heres rustoleum with an automotive clear.

I know I probably shouldn't have used Imron but I wanted the exact same paint and color that the real helicopter is painted with. I got the paint code and took it to the paint store and thats what they gave me.

I found a hazmat forced air respirator with hood on ebay that might go fairly cheap (PAPERR). Would that work?

If that forced air respirator you found clips to your belt and runs off of batteries your better off without. You will get the exact same fumes as you would with an ordinary charcoal respitator. You would have been better off using base coat clear coat then the clear would have been your only worry.Since I would imagine you won't spray more than 4 oz there is no worries.I shot Imron everyday for 3 years still not impressed with it and I shot on average 15 plus gallons a shift and yes I did have the recomended air compressor properly filtered supplied air units to the tune of $1500.00 ea they were very nice.

I love the smell of nitro in the morning..

I have heard rumors that Imron in CA is illegal. Reason for the rumors is due to a couple of deaths.

But I do know that it takes less amount of Imron to kill someone than that of a standard Clear.

I've heard urban legends of a guy thinking that everyone is out to lunch, so decided to lay some coats on a car and left for his lunch. Coming back the shop has EMT everywhere. Finding out one guy didnt leave for lunch and died from inhaling and the Imron clogging his poors. (probably the story dated back from before needing booths)

This is going to be painted outdoors. Ifigure if I do it in the day time, rhere will be a less chance of getting bugs in the paint. Will it help to be outside instead of in a garage or a shop? I might see if the guy who painted the helicopter mechanic woud be able to paint it.

yellowsponge, Why do you spread rumors? Have you thought about verifying facts before posting such stories?

There is a reason why California is part of the "Left Coast" ... most of it's politicians come up with some of the stupidest laws and reasoning (if I should even call it that) to back themselves up. All they end up doing is hurting the people and businesses that have to work around their legislation.

We have all seen those "This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm." warnings. I wonder why only California "knows" this to be the case? Maybe the products only causes cancer and birth defects for Californians? ... BS

I always wondered why ONLY IN CALIFORNIA! No where else in the States would they force you to put those stupid warning labels on.

I have used Imron to paint cars.trucks, and the last was a Knight Twister biplane, full size, and of course used the proper masking and ventilation. I wouls highly reccomend some of the more recent paint products such as PPG to get away from the toxicity . It is toxic, but can be sprayed safely with proper equipment.

I already bought the paint ($145) so I have to use it. I'm either going to get a full mask rated for organics and isocyanates (sp) or see if a local paint/body shop would spray it. On Monday, I'm going to call the mecanic that works on Lifeguard and see if he could possibly do it as they do touch up paint to the full size heli using this stuff.

I'd still like to find more information though such as the exact kind and type of mask to use if I do this myself.
