Just bought a Futaba 401 and 9254 from a B.M.F.A member and the package turns up ,the gyro seems to be ok,the servo has had the label removed and it clearly states 9151 on the plate where the label is normally fitted, whats worse is the servo fails to work after a few minutes.Glad i checked it first. This type of thing is bloody annoying and dangerous to boot.

I hate when that happens.
I've always felt the guys here on RR are much more trustworthy to buy from. But you are always taking a chance and that's why I avoid paying top dollar.

B.M.F.A ??

sounds like you need to have a little chat with that person and get the right servo.

B.M.F.A

I have had a reply and the guy assures me it was working fine and offered to help me troubleshoot the problem, but a dead servo is a dead(as if unplugged)servo.Did substitute thing and all ok with different servo. He did say that the Futaba number on the case does not mean anything as they use a common case???Cant argue the right or wrong of that as i have never peeled a label to check B.M.F.A stands for British Model Flying Association.Might just have to chalk this one up to one of lifes many lessons. At least the Gyro seems ok.

You may want to be sure the pins are all in place in the plug. I have had a new servo that had one pin that would not stay put. From that experience I ALWAYS check to make sure the pins are being captured by the little plastic fingers that hold them in.

Hi Peter

I am always polite Peter, think its the best way, generallyseriously though, think it pays to keep your cool.I did offer to return the servo after the offer of a refund but he said i could keep it.I took the cover off,if i apply a slight pressure to the P.C.B the servo springs into life so there must be a bad connection but my eyes cant see it.I have an engineers hands so it would be like a monkey trying to lay a table on a pin head for me to try and fix it even if i could see the broken joint

Was the B.M.F.A. guy a fellow modeler? Sounds like he's a straight up guy to offer you a refund.

The only people who have ever ripped me off in this hobby were the non-modelers who were "selling such-and-such item for a friend".

Well, come to think of it Great Planes rips me off every time I send anything to them for repair, but that's another story.

I had a 9254 that lost it's label. The case was a 9151.

Glad you got it resolved but this should never have been a topic until you couldn't come to a resolution with the seller first. Hopefully you will react differently if something like this happens again.

You make a good point and i agree with you.I did not mention any names, and i am glad i did not.I was suspicious because the label had been removed from the servo and i accepted the fact that these servos use a common case from the seller.I will try and resolve any further issues next time without jumping the gun.I was very pleased with the outcome and i told the guy so.

I think it is good for us with problems to discuss them with our "friends" here on the website. Where else will we get advice on what to do when these problems occur?

Nice to vent

Yes its nice to have a place to Vent sometimes although not justified with this outcome.Had been waiting for the servo after my old Kalt gasser destroyed itself because the tail servo gave out,my own fault because i noticed it wasnt right in flight and should have landed immediately,i had to land it quickly whilst flying nose in to my left, didnt quite get the skids down square and it was one of those slow motion tip overs that you know is coming and is going to be bad with a high headspeed. The old Kalt turned into a grenade.Spent all week on a complete rebuild,so i was probably still a bit pissed.

I have to support this hobby and say 99% of the time people in this hobby are very trustworthy, I’ve dealt with people in the US, France, Egypt, Australia, and not forgetting the UK and never had a problem so far, sure mistakes will always happen but as shawmcky has just proven the guy soon sorted it for in.
