Thanks guys.

Jim, the "Grimes" retractable landing light is a combo of off the shelf parts and some scratch building. The actual lamp portion comes from Heli-Factory in Germany. More info here:

http://heli-factory.com/zubehoer/au...rfer/index.html

The assembly, which is very nice, is designed to be installed to the bottom of a fuse and have the lamp be flush with the pivot mechanism above. A micro servo is mounted directly to the lamp "arm" for the retract function. In my case, in order to fit it within the pod, I needed to remove the servo, cut the mount in several places and reduce the overall footprint to make it fit. I used JB Weld to keep the aluminum mount together after all of the cutting and material removal. The pod is two pieces of vacuum formed plastic. I made a plug in the correct shapes out of balsa and styrene. After getting them just right I sent the pieces to Joe Howard and he was kind enough to make some vaccum formed parts. (Hence, the steak sandwich Thanks again Joe.) I trimmed, cut and assembled the shells and then mounted the lamp assembly inside. It was a lot of trial and error. I added a lever to the lamp mechanics so that it could be operated via a servo mounted above the pod and then put a small micro switch inline so that the lamp would come on when fully deployed as per the fullsize. They are not up yet but I'll have some build pictures of this process on my Vario gallery page. You can get there by clicking the HOMEPAGE link below.

Hi Nick,
I wanted to say you did a great job building that light from scratch the light looks perfect. I can see there was a lot of detail and time went into that part, but it turned out great and it was worth it!

I looked at the site link you left on your post and saw the light on the yellow helicopter plus there is a video on the site showing it moving up and down on a mil mi 24 . But can you tell me were i can purchase it. That site had all German writing and no wear to purchase light and check out for purchase. Could you tell me were i need to go to purchase it please !

once again nice looking helicopter.

cheers - Jim

Jim, you can buy the light directly from the guys there at Heli-Factory. Unfortunately they do not make it very easy for non-German speakers. Send an email and let them know what you want- you'll get a reply in English. FYI, they only accept bank transfers so be prepared for that. And it's also an expensive little sucker... It ain't like ordering from HeliProz!

Jeff, the overall setup is this:

- Vario 500E kit for the JetCat PHT3 engine
- Heavily modified woodwork and fuse bodywork
- OF five blade main rotor
- Vario four blade tail rotor
- 1 gallon fuel tank (from PeterRob)
- custom designed stainless exhaust
- BVM UAT tank
- JR 12X radio w/ two R1221 RX's into an Emcotec DPSI Twin
- Futaba S9255 servos on cyclic (x4)
- Futaba BLS251 servo on tail
- Futaba GY611 tail gyro
- SK360 cyclic gyro
- 10,000mAh NiMH ECU battery (6 D cells)
- 10,000mAh LiPo RX batteries (5000mAh x2 into the DPSI Twin)
- 5,000mAh LiPo lighting system battery
- Helitronix light controllers (x2)
- whole bunch of wires and stuff

Nick, I doubt it in the cards this year for IRCHA . I sure wish I could but time and money constarints will probably prevent it. I just lost the engine in our work truck so that has to take precedence right now.Just when you think the money is going down the right path ,something steps in and re-routes it !! You guys have a ball !

Wayne I didn't make it. Had a mishap with the 500 the week before IRCHA and then I had to work in Alaska the following week. The damage was minimal but the mechs needed to come out and I had to do some adjusting and main gear maintenance. Just didn't have enough time to do it all and get on the road by the time I got back. But its fixed now and I'll be flying it again soon. I'm planning on IRCHA 2010 so hope to see you there!

Gonzalo, my friend, I think we should start to plan out our IRCHA 2010 trip now. Perhaps put your original ideas for the cargo van into practice.

As for the 500; remember that quick-disconnect fuel value I used for filling? The damn thing stuck open letting the UAT and all of the plumbing be sucked dry while the main tank remained full of fuel. A $10 part nearly cost me the whole machine. Needless to say I am using a Festo shutoff valve now and it will not happen again.

Hi Nick,
here is a picture of another bottom light i found it's from vario im looking into it also. Along with the one you metioned to me. I would just need to make some custom modifcation to it. It looks like it's made out of plastic instead but that's ok But i think it will work.

Jim

Those lamps which Vario now sells are made of a resin type material. They do not seem to be plastic at all.

WOW,what a shame ! Oh well,no matter what we do we still have to face the fact that these birds are not foolproof and you can expect to lose something along the way. I always tell the beginners ,and some of the seasoned,if you can't live with losing one or damaging one once in a while ,GO FISHIN !! Wayne
