Hello Nick !

Very very nice ! A beautiful model you have done !
It seems that the retract light fits perfectly under there :-)
Good luck and enjoy all your flying - nice video ! :-)

Alright, Wayne, fetch my wheelbarrow, please! I really do appreciate all of the kind words. Thanks guys. Joe, your comment was a bit harsh. You'll see the pink soon enough at IRCHA.

Totto, thanks again for all of your help with the light. I had to do some modifications to the frame to allow it to fit into the pod but it turned out nice in the end. Nothing a little metal work couldn't take care of!

kennethw, my answers to your direct questions:

1) I do not have any tail problems with this heli. In general, size does matter. In your case if you could fit longer tail blades I do think it would help increase the tail authority all else being equal.

2) My opinion is that the direction of TR rotation does not matter. Just looking at full size aircraft alone you will notice that many of them have both clockwise and counterclockwise rotations on either side of the tail boom on a given machine. On our models, I have two Trex450's with identical five blade heads. To make one more scale I switched the tail gearbox around to the other side of the boom and changed the TR rotation to clockwise. As a practical matter I notice no difference between the tail authority of either machine- one with the stock tail and the one I switched.

3) I don't know what the efficiency differences are between a cascade TR and non-cascade TR. But it seems some guys on the forum (Super Hornet for one) have had very nice success with a cascade TR so it must be able to work very well.

When I first changed a 450 to a five blade head I had tail issues as well. The control was marginal and in a steep climbout it would blow the tail out every time. Super Hornet mentioned that speeding the tail up with the old, original Align 450 gears would help that and so that's what I did. He was right and the machines fly great now with the higher TR RPM. It's tricky to find those original Align parts anymore but apparently you can also use other aftermarket gears to achieve the same thing. There was a thread or two around here just recently that addressed this. See if you can't find that for more info. Are you certain your TR is set up properly? If so, maybe a combo of more RPM and the four blades will do it for you.

that is beautiful. You did a great job. It must be my monitor though as the white looks a little on the pink side.
Joe

Spot on Joe. Get a new monitor.

I've always loved your bird even the first time I saw it on scalerchelis. Beautiful...the last shot (under the cockpit) is breathtaking.

Also, thank you for your help with the skookum.

Nick,
Question on the landing struts: looks like the way they're mated to the fuse is rigid, with no seams that I can see. What happens on less-than-gentle landings, when the struts flex? Will they tear/crack the beautiful paint job?

Nick,

Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't seen Super Hornet in a few weeks as I have not been flying due to work, but did see his latest 'invention'. I am thinking of switching the mechanics to a TREX or it's clone because I am using Beam mechanics, and cannot mechanically speed up the tail due to it's design.

In his latest version, Super Hornet has modified the tail gear to a motor pinion gear, so it is now 14T or 15T. He was going to update me, but I just haven't been around.

Ken, as far as I'm concerned Super Hornet is the master when it comes to mechanics in a 450 sized scaler. He has done so much testing and has so much experience with it all that being able to see and speak with him directly in person is a huge advantage for you. Now, I'm not familiar with the Beam mechs but if you are unable to speed up the TR with them than that could be a problem. Especially if you're already running four tail blades. Do you know what the ratios are just out of curiosity?

Pat, the four strut fairings as they are supplied from Vario are single pieces. I cut each into two pieces: a short, wide section that attached to the fuselage and a longer, narrower piece that "floats" with the strut. I did that for a few reasons- mostly so that I could have access to the wiring and strut tubes under the fairings for any service issues. The actual struts are two carbon fiber tubes that are slid into each other to form a remarkably strong structural piece. This is further reinforced by aluminum tubes that are fitted into the two primary formers that the landing gear is supported from. It might be hard to see but there is a seam at the joint between the upper and lower fairing pieces and that is where any flex would occur. As you probably know CF is a rigid material and it does not readily deform from its molded shape. If it is stressed too much it would just fail completely. So as long as I don't land too hard it should all be okay. I did have an ugly auto a few weeks ago due to air in my fuel lines. The heli bounced pretty good and I thought for sure I had damaged something but a very careful inspection revealed none. That CF is amazing.

Wemo, thank you and you're welcome.

Wow,6.75? That is serious RPM's on the TR. As I recall, the stock Trex450 ratio is 4.24 to 1. With the old Align gears it goes to 4.95 to 1. That's what I'm running (at 2100RPM on the head) and it holds very well. I wouldn't think that 4.63 would give you too much trouble but maybe every little bit helps. Are you sure you can't hack your Beam mechs and replace the tail drive gear?

For the Beam, the only thing that I can change is the actual tail spindle. The beam is 11T. I tried using a Honey Bee 2 which had 10T, but it did not fit properly and killed the bearings and the belt.

The Beam's tail 'drive' is a cog directly connected to the one-way sleeve of the main pulley....

Well, it's a shame that you might need to change out all of your mechanics just for the tail drive but it might be what you need to do...

Can you try longer tail blades? It may not look quite right but it could work.

Yup, I'm using the Thunder Tiger ones which are nearly as large as I can go that would fit the tail blade grips easily. I was using a Hirobo Lepton ones before, but had to file the thickness down and shape it to fit the grip. Wasn't too good in the end.

Anyway, I think I'll get the TREX Clone for about USD40 and try it out.

A picture of my existing tail before the bearing blew up ...

I will be out at a few events coming up. The first is on July 12 at the Arlington air show. I'll be at scalehelipalooza down in Washougal, WA the weekend of July 18th. I'll be at the cascade (CMHC) fun fly probably on the 25th. And then I'll be down at IRCHA for a few days. Good Lord I am dreading that drive!

Isn't it amazing how those smaller "events" seem to fill up every weekend during the summer.... my schedule looks about the same, but in the NE instead of the NW!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!

Why am I finally begining to see a pattern here???? Everytime Joe shows up, steak is involved!!!!

See you in Muncie!!!!!!!!! Stan
