We use a Teletest 7", 2.4GHz dual diversity integrated monitor, These are not exactly cheap, but they are very rugged and seriously do the job. Various battery options or XLR4 to 12V.

Sunlight is always an issue with small LCDs, it would seem only Sony have got this one covered, I've tried so many different glass coatings I've given up. We also use a 7" Sony HDV clam shell, this we tend to straight feed through the Teletest for the director.

Thanks for tip Highspy. Do you actually use the 2.4Ghz downlink or do you just feed the video in from your 3rd party video downlink?

Also, are there any problems with display when the signal gets weak?

Check out Nebtek.com

I have a few monitors from them and pretty happy with the price versus performance.

Best,

Thanks Tabb, I can't believe I didn't see those before! How does the antiglare screen hold up in direct sunlight on the cheaper models?
Which models are you using?

Thats what I was thinking. 3s would be 11.1v so that should be sufficient. Thanks!

also watch for high cd/m2 values a.k.a nits.

When i was doing research last week I found out from various reviews that 400Cd/m2 is decent for outside work. you also get screens upto 600cd/m2 highly bright but also cost a fortune

I dont understand how you guys are able to see anything on a portable dvd player in bright sunlight, i barely see it in cloudy weather and inside a black box

Only monitor ive been able to watch in bright light is a pro video monitor for broadcast use and costs like 2000$

Just remember that unless you're using a commercial grade system (crazy expensive), the downlinks that we typically use are only good for SD at best and a HD monitor is overkill. Find something that you can see but a shade is something that we always use in Hollywood, reguardless of the image quality. The shade not only bocks sun light but shadows and reflections as well that can distract the director.

Personally, I'd give the director his own shaded private monitor and use a splitter to attach a much larger viewer for anyone else...with or without a shade. Remember that a lot of directors are used to a 8-10 inch Sony 8020 style monitor and want to see the image as one would in a theater. Check out the Hoodman ( http://www.hoodmanusa.com/ ) shades typical design but don't be afraid to make a shade from cardboard, it's done all the time in Hollywood as shades tend to get destroyed pretty easily.

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

I have used these with good results. If you want sunlight readable I know it is expensive but it works.
