What downlink monitors are you guys using?

We currently use high res video goggles but it would be nice to have a seperate LCD for clients to view. I'm looking at getting a couple of small 6.4" to 7" LCD's to display our downlink but don't want to be stuck with something that cannot be viewed in sunlight conditions.

The ideal solution would be 4:3 aspect ratio with composite inputs and either ultra bright or transflective LCD.

I know you are after small, but I have just completed a ground station that incorporates a 17" LCD Monitor in a perfectly sized case that is very good quality and really not any more $'s than the 6 - 7" stuff your probably considering.
If you still need small then look at good quality Car Entertainment equipment. It is usually anti-glare and can cope with harsher environments + obviously 12v.

PM me if you need more details.

Thanks mate, yes 17" is a bit on the large side as we need to be fully mobile with monitor and controls.

I've looked into car LCD's and there appear to be plenty of options out there but very few decent models in the smaller size range with the 4:3 ratio and transflective display.

Perhaps someone else has had better luck finding something along the same lines.

We use a portable DVD player, works great. You might have to make a sun shade for certain days.

I've been playing with one. It works great. Multi purpose. You can attach goggles to it as well. So goggles for the operator and screen for anyone else that wants to watch. Then if you upgrade later on you could always use it for your car!

Just make a simple sun-shade. I run it on 3s 5000. (old 6s 5000 packs I'm reusing)

Downside is it's bulkier than a basic LCD screen.

I'll find a pic later.

I just use an eBay 7" LCD screen, but keep it in its own case along with downlink receiver & 2Ah LiPo

Looks good Tony. I had a setup just like that using an old pelican case but we now need to be more mobile so we are opting for a slightly more portable option. Hence the need for smaller transflective screen .

Nice Looks like a 16:9 though. I've since located a few 4:3 options but finding a suitable trasflective model is a challenge. I might just opt for an ultra bright and build in the sun shade. We had terrible results with this last time we tried, but we were using a pretty ordinary 8.4" LCD. It basically turned into a mirror as soon as we took it outside.

the latest trend of making LCD screen shiny is totally dumb. BTW my screen has a button which enables choosing between 16:9 and 4:3.

What about these backup wireless systems. I see them at Sam's for about $70. I have one in my car and it seems to work great, good color even in a brightly lite car during daytime, and the monitor has an AV input besides the wireless input.
And they are 12V..

I'm using a 5.6" LCD intended for a car's head-rest .... composite input and works great, even in sunlight!

(sorry for the dark picture)

Cheers

Check out this link: under monitors they have a drop down menu and you just select the range of sizes you need. They look like high quality units.

Thanks guys,

Hogster, do you have a weblink/price for that monitor?

Kaiviti, thanks for the tip mate. Those displays are fantastic but probably overkill for viewing a video downlink. I've seen the 1500NIT models in sunlight and they certainly are beautiful.

I'll probably end up with a LinITX transflective. It appears to be the best price to quality transflective option I can find.

Cheers

Hey I use one of these.. works great for all intents and purposes.. 8" can choose 4/3 or 16/9 in the settings

http://www.abesofmaine.com/item.do?...800&id=NUWDR800

this is it on my tripod

It also has a has a hole on the bottom to mount on a tripod using the screw.. just like a camera...

It will play certain mem cards also, so could be used to preview images with the client..

It does need a Shade on most days

I fit everything in a 32cmx23cmx15cm tool case.
JR8103tx + 12v pack + downlink receiver + patch antenna + 5" monitor and a plastic box for sockets and an on/off switch. I moved both hinges and one of the latches to the shorter side of the case so it opens the way you see in the picture. The TX antenna goes thru a hole. The vid rec antenna folds out when used.
It is cool to have the camera operator free to move around. It takes less than a minute to get everything ready for action(or the other way round). Very easy to stow away and etc. . .

The down side is the camera operator thinks it is a tad heavy on the shoulders if he has to carry it longer periods. Also, the 5" monitor is too small for this. We definetly need a 7" one that does not go blue when the radio signal weakens. It is very annoying when that happens.

Nice work Ahmet, that's close to what I'll be doing. Except that the housing will be custom made to house everything ergonomically, including custom 2.4Ghz controls from a stripped 12Z transmitter .
