Ive been having a problem with the tail tweeking out on the 500. I bought a gear drive tail, moved the gyro, reciever, bought metal bearing blocks, messed with the gyro gain, and metal skit mount. Nothing helped, the tail still kicks out. I know its a static problem because if i spray the main gear with wd40 its fine for a flight then i have to repeat. i hate sprayen the heli if i wanted an oiled up heli ill fly the 600 LOL. Any help would be great. Thanks guys!

sounds like the same problem some of the 600esp owners are having and it a electrical problem the fix has been to reprogram the esc change the trottle response speed. at least it worth a try even if its not it.

t-rex 500 tail twitch, static

tryed to re-program the esc with no luck. The tail still kicked out randomly. I replaced the main blades thinking they were throughing the gyro off being out of ballance and still kicked out! I knew it had somthing to do with the static so i took a jumper from the motor mount to the negitive side of the battery (for ****s and giggles). It seems to be fine!!! The tail is holding!!! I will rig a permenent ground up tonight and ill try to get out tomorrow. suppose its the main gear that generates all the static and wiggs the esc and gyro? thanks for your help! ill get som pics of the grounding strap up if its a succes.

You're probably not having a static issue. First off, that problem comes from the tail belt, not the main gear. You shouldn't have to spray every other flight either. You should spray the tail belt once and be done with it. People who have had ESD, usually they have a crash, not the tail kicking out. Sounds like something else is going on. What radio/ RX are you using?

Does the tail kick out all the time, how long, etc?

I have the tail gear setup so the belt thing isnt my issue. this is the setup. scorpion motor, spectrum 6200, futaba 401 gyro, stock esc, and the tail twitchs with any battery. as far as frame upgrades it has the cnc aluminum bottom plate mount, metal bearing blocks, gear tail, carbon tail blades, carbon paddles, metal tail servo mount and thats it. i pulled all blades off, spooled it up and found with an electrical meter that it generats static from a solid 2 inches off the frame. I thought if i got a gear tail setup it would cure my problem but it acualy made it worse!!!! I belive that whats going on is that the static is generated by the main gear and the static jumps down the tail. I put about twenty flights on this heli before it started doing this. Anyway i will be sitting there hovering and it starts to twitch and if i continue to fly it gets violent. it will kickout 3 times every two seconds, the distance the tail moves is about 3 inches sometimes less sometimes more. If anyone has experienced this, its scary. I didnt get out today to test the ground strap but im hoping it helps. Sill looking for help

the ground dosnt work. I still have the tail kicken out on me. Its wierd ill fly it for the first minute and it flys fine then it seems it gets worse after that. Ill prob order a new jyro and give that a shot. The ground strap runs from the motor plate to the negitive terminal on the battery for the curious.

You'll see this static with most helis, doesn't mean you're going to have an ESD problem...

Here is a video someone on the Trex 500 forum posted a while ago, showing what an ESC lockout looks like (fast forward to 2 minutes in)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5yMOwBg36M

My point again is that some tail wag or glitching is most likely not ESD. Where is your throttle curve at? Many people have tail pulsing or glitching issues when the throttle curve is too low on the 500s.

In the meantime, I'd stop spraying down your 500 with WD 40 before you get some in the places you don't want it.

Finally, you mentioned that you have a torque tube? If you do some research you'll see that the static issues are from the belts, nothing else, and with a TT, you've eliminated that.

Something else is faulty on your heli.

Change headspeed

I don't think it's static problem. I had the same problem before and done changes including switching to another motor. But I got the same results. I thought of changing the headspeed and then problem solved.
I hope this helps.

A few things come to mind, none static related.

1. Are you running your ESC in governor mode, or standard throttle mode? If running the governor mode, switch to standard.

2. If you really are seeing some odd twitching in the tail, perhaps the one-way clutch is not doing its job well. Might want to check into that.

3. Increase your head speed. The 500 really wants the head to be singing when flying. Low head speed makes the 500 do some really weird things.

4. Could be your gyro setup, your gyro mounting method, something in the tail control system that's not free and is occasionally binding.

I was going to say check the tail pitch slider and make sure it is not binding. It must be smooth as butta.

It has a torque tube setup, the head speed is up at 94%, no bind in tail, esc is standard setup, lowered voltage to 5v, replaced all bearings including motor, and checked the one way gear. I found the tail servo has a lil slop but seems to function fine. I ordered up another gyro (gp750) and servo Align comes with the gyro to be sure, its the only thing i havent done. Ive been flyen a 600 for 2 years and this 500 for a year so i dont consider myself a rookie. Belive me i feel like an idiot not being able to figure out whats going on here. Thanks guys!

Are you meant to spray wd40 on the tail belt to stop static? I ran out of oil for my scorpion motor a few weeks ago and used wd40 instead, I accidentily got some on my main gear and it completely stripped the gear on the next flight, wouldent the same thing happen to the tail gear if you put it on the belt.

Graphite spray

Ive used graphite sprray for my TREX 500 belt. Its done wonders with my tail kicks (I think the static affected the gyro).

I dont know if its usable on the main gear though.
