Hummm

I'm still running the camper fuel myself...I had to close the gap a little to make it run better in this hot weather...I'm going to try to stick with it because of the smell myself

I guess you got to do what works for you, no doult..

I am going to stick with gas for awhile. Sounds like the Z231 is working good for you. Shoot, I don't want to buy another engine but if it is putting out more power, well I might have to.

Dangerous,

Did you solve your problem yet?

Here is some of my input.

I'm running a fairly stock 1996 vintage X-Cell Gas with the stock engine (G230PUH) and tank, plumbing, etc.

I was doing some loops and rolls this weekend (the first for my Gasser as I've been babying it since '96). And I didn't get one hiccup in the engine.

Right now I'm running camp fuel, at 64:1 amsoil.

Here is a thought for you. If you fill your tank, and then go and fly a loop or a roll right away, then the issue is probably NOT your tank/clunk setup. With the tank full, the chance of the pickup getting out of the fuel is pretty slim.

So from here I would look at the needle setup. Be sure to run your idle on the rich side, or as rich as you can get it without too much tail shake.

I still have the stock W167 carb on my engine and am having a hard time deciding where the high needle should be set. I may have it a bit rich, but it's sure hard to tell. Oh, I'm running the MinAir optional muffler, so that is not stock. I don't think this will affect things much.

I'm also using the govenor, using the flywheel magnets to trigger the sensor of the GV-1. Be sure your throttle curve is setup behind your govenor. The best way to do this is to fly in each flight mode and then turn off your govenor. Try to match the head speed using your pitch curves that your govenor has chosen with each flight mode (head speed 1, 2 and 3). I think I'm using 1500, 1600, and 1700 head speed.

I find the hardest part of flying the gasser is to be sure the needles are set right. It seems I can get too much engine missing (tail wobble) at hover, and I can never decide if I should adjust the idle mixture or the high end mixture to fix hover wobble. Then my full throttle pull out needs to be adjusted. These controls interact.

So if you are still having your problem, try it with a full tank of fuel before much fuel has burned off. If the problem occurs with the full tank, I don't believe it's a fuel tank or fuel pickup problem.

I flip it over for the first time At Dothan Friday and done some mild 3D manuvers...I found out real quick that this engine will need a solid control system up front...the old front end is just not stiff enough for this engine...I got the SE front in now to put on, with some 9252's ...I know, I'm nuts, but I got to see how good it can get.....

I also tried Tom's GOV I'm very impressed with it ! I highly recommend this unit...It makes things so much better

I'm getting there Only have 1 1/4 gallons thru it...
Many Regards,
Bill

Bill, I put the SE front on about 1 !/2 year ago. Really is solid you can pick the heli up by the front. I reversed the side frames, to move the throttle servo cutout and the switch to the left side. If you do this you have to notch the frames slightly where to rocking servo mount goes. You need two spacers for the frame bottom to bottom of the front section. I used a gold dogbone spacer and cut it to fit. The top mounting holes needed drilled out slightly. Have the gyro mounted behind to M/S. Using rear T/R servo mount.

Well,
We are getting bombed by my name sake (Bill) right now...Freaking water everywhere
Dave, thanks for the tip...I will look at that real close...I may even look at going a semi-ccpm on this setup also..I'm weighing all the factors..Do you run the Fury canopy by any chance? I read where Paul-Hillman did, and tried to ask what front end he was using, but he never answered back..Do you think the Fury canopy would fit with this front-end?
Regards,
Bill

Bill - I am currently running the "Semi-CCPM" setup on mine:

Since these pics, I've added a carbon top tray plate and a set of 9252's. No hard 3D for me, but so far it feels really solid.

Dave and I were just talking about the Fury canopy conversion on Sunday. I think the plastic tray would be the only way to go. The 20oz tank sitting sideways (SE front) wouldn't clear.

I wonder how the weights compare between an assembled SE canopy and the Fury? Dave - do you have a scale at home?

Thanks for the info Eric Nice job! I like this kind of stuff....After talking to John Garst last nite, I may have to change out that big 20 ounce tank to make the Fury canopy work, or add flair to the bottom section of the canopy....We'll see... Very nice machine

Ericd,

Where did you get that nice wire loam materiel? I've been looking for some as it looks nice and light! I don't like the heavy plastic spiral wrap that radioshack sells.

Rich,

I got a spool of it from http://www.mcmaster.com . Their part number is 9284K11 for 100 ft, and 9284K1 for 10 feet. It's listed as 1/8" nominal. It fit's really well on a servo wire though. There are a bunch more sizes listed on their site.

Rick's sells it for $1 a foot. I bought my 100 ft spool for around $20!

DangerousDick,

Did you solve your cut out problem yet? I'm curious!!! I like to learn from others so I don't make the same mistakes!

I had a little success last Sunday, but haven't had the chance to fly it again since - damn work keeps getting in the way .

I played with the needles almost all day - trouble is I don't know if the thing is running really rich, just right, lean or what (except when it's too lean it cuts out anyhow!).

I can barely get the thing running smoothly the right way up now so I guess I'm at the stage where I need to strip the carb down completely to make sure that's OK and I might just get a new plug to try that one. I've also 'released' a PCM receiver from another model so that's another possibility.

I guess the real problem is that I've got too many heli's and the others are getting a little neglected lately so I'll have to take them out if just to blow the cobwebs off them in the meantime

Appreciate all the comments though and will keep you all up to date on the issue.

Cheers
Richard.

Richard,

Good luck with it! My only problem is knowing when the high needle is set right.

I keep my idle needle set so it is just on the rich side, where the engine bobbles a bit in a hover.

Let us know if you solve your engine cutting out issue.

Just a little update for you.

I've been out with the X-Cell again today and at a lower head speed (1,400 on the GV-1) it flies around nicely and will even loop and roll albeit at a very slow rate due to the headspeed but every now and then it will give a bad 'cough' and throw the tail around while it catches up with itself.

When I flick it up to a 1,600 head speed I get a more lively (read 'my desired') response from the cyclics but the thing doesn't run smoothly at all.

I'd like to persist with this model but at the moment all I can think of is to get a nice big scale fus like a huey and potter about 'scaley'.

What I'd really love is for someone to get hold of this model and really 'wring it out' setting the carb up accordingly - someone who knows as much about petrol stuff as I know about glow stuff cos I still feel a little 'in the dark' on this one.

Cheers
Richard.

Hi Richard,

Well, I'm in New England, a bit of a far ride from England. Hopefully you can find someone to help you.
