V4 is the pinhole leak bug fix

I've owned the V2, V3 and V4. In my opinion they all sound nice, and between the V3 and V4 I really couldn't differentiate any difference in sound. The biggest reason why the V4 came out is that the V3's had defective welds and many of them leaked via pin holes at the weld joints, even mine.

I did measure DB output of the V2 and it was 92db on my Spectra. The V3 boasted to be 15% quieter though I never measured the db output of that. I still have the V4 for sale but if anyone is interested I suppose I could bolt it on and measure the db output of that and also compare it to my side mount zimmerman. My measurements were taken in a hover at about 10 feet or 3 meters distance.

The V4 fixed that issue so that there are no more pinhole leaks. Soundwise I think you would be hard pressed to tell any difference.

Official guidelines for measurement (in the Netherlands) is hight 1m and distacne 7m. Muffler is pointing towards the measurement side.

With Century V3 and without airbox it is easy over 80dB

I'm off to the field soon

7 meters is alot further than the "standard" here. I will measure at 3 meters and also at 7 meters to see what we get.

Your 78 at 7 meters may be very much equal to about 88 at 3 meters. OK, enough theorizing, I'll do an actual test and come back with real results.

The numbers are in

Head speed is 1550, 1670, 1790.

Zimmerman Muffler:

Minair Aircleaner side:

At 9 ft: 89, 91, 92db
At 21 ft: 85, 86, 87db

Muffler tailpipe side:

At 9 ft: 86, 87, 89db
At 21 ft: 82, 85, 86db

Century v4 Muffler:

Minair Aircleaner side:

At 9 ft: 91, 92, 92
At 21 ft: 84, 86, 87

Muffler tailpipe side:

At 9 ft: 89, 90, 92
At 21 ft: 85, 86, 88

Bottom line:

Century v4 still maxes out at 92db as did my v2 years back.
Zimmerman appears to be similar to my 1005 rear mount zimmerman which maxed out at 88db back the same day when I tested the V2.
Air cleaner side is louder than the muffler tailpipe side. I believe this is NOT true with the stock airfilter - the minair pancake filter is noticably louder.

Zimmerman is quieter than the century v4 by 2db on average.

I feel like I just did a Myth Busters episode

Note my earlier e-mail to Paul (see below):

If you check on the relationship of sound pressure level and how the human ear precieves it, you will find that when doing an A/B test, most human ears could just barely detect a 3db difference in SPL's in the frequency bandwidth we work in here. And very few (mostly younger ears) could just barely detect a 2db difference.

So for all practicle purposes, a 2 to 3 db difference is not too relevant. But the difference to your pocket book would be much more noticeable, as would the differences in failure rates.

Thank you for the Myth Buster test. It proves that the big difference in the price of the two mufflers, is really paying for a relatively inaudible 2db difference in sound pressure level.

Also of consequence, is the measurement of the vibe level in the Spectra airframe when the engine is working. Many vibrations are of a low enough amplitude to not be seen, but at a high enough frequency to cause metal fatique relatively early on. So if one airframe has a more friendly vibration profile then another, then exhaust systems may suffer cracking and/or loosening on the one with the less friendly vibtation profile.

Another area worth researching relative to the two muffler systems, is the difference in tensile strength etc. between the type and thickness of the stainless steel the Zimmy's are made from and the type and thickness of aluminum the Century unit is made from. Maybe the breaking and cracking that everyone is talking about with the Zimmy's, is due to the relative intolerance of stainless steel to vibrations that will bring on early fatique and this relationship to the vibration profile in the Spectra airframe.

How else are we going to find out, you bought the Zimmerman to test it and no one seems to have tried the Hatori so I thought I would

Use the goop

I have tried everywhere to find something called goop around here and none of them have any heat rating, all seem to be some sort of shoe goo.
can you give a brand name. a link with a picture of the packaging?

Goop

Go to Autozone, they sell automotive goop there.

Price difference, well we're talking $34 between the side mount zimmerman and the v4. Its not huge. The rear mount zimmerman and the Hatori are the more expensive ones with the bigger price gap.

As an update, now up to 30 flights on the side mount zimmerman everything is great no leaks no cracks and with the side deflector even the rear of the heli is staying clean!

On the lighter side, I executed by first complete Curtis Youngblood auto yesterday - backwards inverted roll to upright with backwards side over the runway to a tippy toe tailhigh touchdown - yeah baby!

Hey Bill

Where did you get that goop from, Mexico?

Tailgunner, I got the "move" down, but it shaky and I'm just waiting on "smooth" now after which I'd be looking for a video man if possible to get it on tape
