you can stick a wire in but that's not really going to get it out. There is a baffle to the right of the out tube and the carbon seems to be building up around the baffle. I would try some solvent and see if you can clean it out. the only reason I can see it is because I have this one apart trying to reinforce it.

I am using a lincoln precision tig 185 it has the smallest air cooled torch for small work but to be honest these things were machine assembled and I really have to watch the heat.

I am planning on trying a different mount tab and if this works I will post a pic. my problem is the stainless is fatigued on this one and I don't think that anything that I do will last.

I hope you can get it to work. Can you take a picture while you have the muffler "apart"?

I have flown about 5 or 6 gallons through my reinforced side mounted Zimmerman without a crack so far. Maybe my engine is smoother than normal...? Not sure but it looks like it's holding up so far. I sure hope so, cause I don't want to have to go out and buy another one any time soon.

Did you try a copper exh gskt. or billme's automotive goop technique?

The copper gskt has worked well for me, you just have to tighten often until it compresses fully. I've not tried with the automotive goop yet.

Just another crappy day in Paradise....Aloha!

Maybe I need to convert my Spectra to electric

.funny you should mention that...was thinking of upgrading my 600E and looking at that stuff...and a nice hacker A-50-14L electric turbine motor on 12S gives 4.8HP and runs at about 560KV - so direct drive to the current pinion is about right...4 of the cheap 4000mah 6s packs in series and parallel = a 2kg 'fuel' charge - comes out much the same as a zenoah and a tankful..and should give over 15 mins flight...

..now if we can get Raja to imporve the output of his jewel to keep those packs charged you could fly forever

Don't convert get a MA Ion X2 mine is 12s and the most powerful thing I have ever flown.

As a matter of fact the IonX2 is why I decided to get a spectra G

That's a good idea because those big 12S packs cost a fortune.

New beginings

I like what I see so far! I got the zimmerman side mount pipe from Irwin and it looks really good. Its made out of stainless steel but not so beefy as the Predator V4 and I was delighted to see that my bird will almost be 1/4 pound lighter with it. V4 = 13oz, Side mount zimmerman = 9.7oz. Its also quieter than the V4 as I heard it run at MHA.

I'll keep you guys posted on how it holds up when I go flying, after the current storm of the weekend passes. Its been drizzling/raining for the past 48 hours non-stop.

If you got a rear mount zimmerman for your Spectra - hold off on using it as the side mount may be the best choice yet.

After your experiences it seems like there might not be much resale value to the rear mount, even if it is new.

It would be nice to somehow reinforce the rear mount such that it wouldn't fail.

Well

In your case Justin I think you may be able to return it as its new and unused. Didn't tailgunner say that zimmerman would take them back if they were un-altered?

Anyway let me put some miles on this one before we bless it 100%.

It is very quiet. I've never heard the V4 so I can't compare. I didn't realize how quiet the Zimmerman was until I got my heli back out after a few months of "off time". Rbort, I think you will be happy with the new side mount. Let me know how yours holds up. I know you fly all the time, so you should be a good tester.

Boy I hope so, Mine's New/uninstalled too. A swap would be ok for me but I wouldn't be able to lay out the money (in confidence)for another one.

RCMarket sells both

Look at their website. If you bought the rear mount zimmerman from them they may very well allow you to trade for the side mount zimmerman if you haven't run yours. The side mount says its 82db on their website.

For those of you guys looking for a local place in the US to buy one of those, get it from Irwin at QWW, he has them in stock here for a quick turnaround. I ordered mine last Friday and I got it today.

Is it certain that the rear mount Zimmerman will fail sooner than the other mufflers available?

It seems with these gassers that all mufflers fail in some way or another.

I just wish the rear-mount Zimmerman could be repaired when it does fail. Most metal things can be welded back together. Why is the stainless steel used in the Zimmerman mufflers different?

stainless is a harder grade of metal it would be expensive but titanium or another alloy might hold up better.

from what I can see fixing this one is its very thin material and once metal reaches the point of metal fatigue it can be welded but the metal right next to the repair still has metal fatigue so then it cracks right along the edge of the repair weld. this is very common in most welding applications. you repair something and when it fails again its right on the edge of the weld.

I have been welding since 1978 when I passed the nuclear pipe welding test at Satsop, so I have 30 years experience welding.
