I had a V3 what a piece of rubbish that was, bad welds, pin holes etc. All credit to Century albeit very slow they changed it for a V4 which holds on brilliantly and shows no sign of leaks after 30 flights.

I also have a Zimmerman rear mount exhaust here to put on, what worries me more is over reaction to Raja's problem. Yep his exhaust has issues I recognise that, but how many of these things have been sold and how many have problems?

It's good to read of others misfortunes (not in that sense) so we can be aware of potential issues with our own machines and equipment, but let's not overreact just yet...

So the Zimmerman is cracking the A-frame too due to the mounting? With the narrow body Spectra, I think it would be nice to have the Zimmerman muffler pointing straight back and hanging off the tail boom. Or maybe there would be some better configuration. Good luck ever getting that into production, however. It was hard enough getting the existing version to see the light of day.

Are the original 1005 Zimmerman muffler made out of very thin stainless steel like the Spectra-G version?

So far there have been no problems with my zimmy (spectra version). Even with the canted header pipe and large gap between the pipe and muffler inlet (header pipe was not inline with muffler inlet when I purchased it), I have not had any leaks or any problems with the teflon coupler . The header bolt screws and muffler mounting screws have not loosened up since the day I installed them .

Maybe the key to eliminating some of the vibration from the engine back to the frame via the exhuast system , is to increase the gap between the header and muffler inlet to make it somewhat more flexible .

At the moment, I've only got 4 gallons thru it , so I guess time will tell .

How thick is the metal on model for the 1005? I believe the spectra ver is too thin. I like the wider mount on the 1005 ver that gives space for some dampeners and might or should help .

Although my gasses experience is very limited at best I have had the weld and pinhole problem with the V-3 I have tried the Zimmerman once
and must agree with Raja that the V-4 seems to be the quietest and makes the most power and the price is much better.

It seems that there is no perfect muffler for our Gasser's yet as they all seem to have some neg points but if all keep tinkering I think it will get better. I am sure the MFGs monitor posts like these or at least they should.

Maybe the wide gap and the flexible coupler is the way to go. Mine was setup with the vario black coupler and they are quite stiff with a small gap (like 2mm max) and with that I'm seeing the A-frames cracking. I'd say stay away from that setup and try the wider gap and see if that holds up better like Marco's is.

Just because I had issues doesn't mean everyone will, but its good information to pass on and I tell it how it is the good and the bad so you guys are well informed.

My v4 sounds nice (I'd say better sounding than the zimmerman in my opinion - tailgunner I'd like you to try it and post your opinion on that) and my only issue is sealing up the leak permanently. I hear Carpman is having some good luck with it, I think he is running a G231 which may be a little bit smoother. Carpman, did you just use the stock muffler gasket and that's it or no gasket?

How come you don't ever hear anything about the other zimmerman exhaust? (regular mount) The only thing I ever see talked about is
the rear exhaust. Could it be price or quality or performance?

Its much easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!!!

Yes I am just using a stock gasket, I do check the bolts after the first flight of each session but have never had to tighten them further. However I have to admit that I am a bit of a gorilla when it comes to tightening things up, sometime it goes against me

I do like the V4 that Century sent me as a V3 replacement, good quality, sound and power.

The Zimmerman I will try one day, I actually bought it off someone that never used it as they converted to Turbine, but the quality seems good. I have flown a Zimmerman on a 600N for a year now, the can looks the same as the Spectra one and it is brilliant, looks as good as the day it was purchased even though it has had some real stick.

I have already realised that in this hobby one persons problem posted in a forum sometimes becomes widespread panic. I always listen to what is going on around me, check it out on my own helis and come to my own conclusion and then just get out there and fly 'cos that's what it's all about, isn't it?

There are some people using the Zimmermann with regular mount. It is a completely different muffler.

That looks like another interesting option

Would be nice to see one in person and hear it run. The century v4 is currently on my heli and I'm trying to come up with a way to stop the leak. I tried goop today on the gasket but that didn't hold one flight. Will try again with red rtv maybe the trick is not to retighten and I may be compressing the gasket more and more and then with the heating and cooling it breaks the seal and starts to leak.

A suggestion

I've not flown it enough to really know..but after Preddie's last rebuild I added some heavy split-spring washers under the bolts. My bolts are the one's from the can exhaust.. which are too long.. and under the heads i have short lengths of steel tube as 'long washers' and then the split spring under that.
As stated.. not really flown it enough to know long term but lasted several flights more than ever before without coming loose...

My muffler is zimmerman (according to Irwin). It's look exactly as the one in the picture and I think it's quieter then the V4.

Yes totally agree your Irwin zimmerman was quieter than my V4 for sure! If I can't get the V4 to stop leaking it may be worth it to try out the zimmerman like yours. Do you have any leaks at the header with that? I didn't pay much attention to that while we were on the field. Just curious and how does the pipe hold up after use? Upload some pictures of it here to your gallery so I can take another look.

I'm glad to be able to help you out with your Preddie! She was flying really nice after we tweaked her out! Have you been flying it alot? I got about 20 more flights on my Spectra since we met and I started doing some flips to inverted and back while autorotating down now

Zimmermann Stainless

Several years ago when we first produced our line of gasser we decided to go with stainless steel over aluminum. We have been making mufflers for 20 years & have some experience. There are many advantages long with obvious disadvantages mostly material cost as well as NEW laser welding assembly.. In the beginning we had breaks on both the tuned pipe manifold as well as the muffler can joints,
The new assembly technology is now perfected.

Tobi Zimmermann has worked very close to improve his production, he is interested in always bettering his product line.. I would consider his gasser products to be the best in the market.
Not because we sell them, rather performance, support & design. The German produce stainless material is uniquely formulated to hold the welds & handle the welded joint from cracking from fatigue & the real killer HEAT the alum can't heandle & never will over time.
making them more durable. This is the material being used now.

I have a mufflers on my 26CC with over 100 flights & tuned pipe on my 20CC. WE find the engines run cooler because the stainless drawing the heat away from engine along.
I do not suffer any leaks using red silicone & the threaded manifold has not loosened up at all.

We are now working with Zimmermann on new gasser muffler designs for gas & glow machines

You know that may be the ticket

The fact that its stainless steel rather than aluminum means it expands and contracts less and that might be what is needed to prevent it from breaking the seal at the exhaust header.

I trying to figure out how a cracking rear mount Zimmerman has turned into all Zimmerman are bad. I have not read that any ware, look at the V3 from century mine was junk, leaky pinholes in the welds but the V4 seems fine in that area. I thought the whole point of most of our comment and questions were aimed how to solve these problems that are accruing. Rajas rear mount can was mounted to the a frame pillar and cracked the pillar as well so it seems there is a design flaw in this mount, the 1005 model has a wider mount with some standoffs and seem to work according to those that have them.

Just thought I would make sure this does not turn into a muffler bashing thread as I think the problem can be worked out if we all contribute.

I'm going to get one of Irwin's zimmermans to try out and see how that holds up. At this point I got a great running helicopter, the muffler is the last missing link for me and I'm pretty particular about my machines I hate leaks that mess up the cleanliness of the gas machine.

Yep - I agree the V3 had problems, as we see, seems so do some of the with the Zimmermann. But Century would exchange them for us at no charge.

Some still have a V1 (as have I) - no problem

I know a number of our customers who have V2's - no problem

Some had leaking V3 that where exchanged - no problem with the exchanged one.

Now some others have the new V4 - no problem - even more quiet then the others and they seem to let the engine breath better (I will have to try it when I toast my old V1.

)

I find most manufactured products will have issues at times - if they are looked after properly, then most of their customers will understand and be happy.
