OK I admit it; I shamelessly attempted to copy the Campos Brother's (buildem & dieselracer) Blades with a Neu RZ 350 'Razor' series motor. Mine tips the scales at 261g (without a battery) which I believe is 25 or 30 grams heavier than theirs, so I'm already asking a lot from this small but mighty motor. Then I am using a 1050 mAh 30C battery weighing in at 97.5g (they're using 600 mAh 25C batteries, I think, weighing less I'm sure). So If I could fly like them, which I cannot, my blade wouldn't keep up anyway. Having said that, I'm really impressed. They use a Futaba GY 401 gyro which I also did, they use Medusa tail motors (I think) and I used a Feigao, they used a 10t pinion and so did I. Because mine is heavier by at least 15% I was not surprised that mine did not seen to jump like theirs do in the videos, but it is really stable and the tail holds. I had to play with the gyro some and it is not really dialed in completely, but this tail will not break loose no matter what. That gyro is truly the one to use if you can afford it. I'll try to add some photos before I crash it the first time. Diesel, maybe I'll see you tomorrow at the funfly in Orange County. I going to try to make it. Thanks to the Campos Brothers for offering up the 'family secrets'.

Curious

Bob, where's the 20 grams difference between yours and theirs? Inquiring minds want to know. . .

I really think we'd need the super light batteries to get that "pop" we see from them. However, I have to say again, I'm not doing that kind of "smack down" stuff they are and I just LOVE all the flying time I'm getting out of the 1050s. Still, some day when I build my ultra light razor blade I'll sure want the small batts on it.

Hey, that razor350 is a miracle machine. It hauls chubzilla around with one winding tied behind it's back. Thanks Diesel!!

Speaking of windings, did you see the size of the wire used as windings in that little motor? Pretty good size wire I'd say. I'm not sure Mitch where Buildem and dieselracer have eliminated weight. I held both of their helis in my hands yesterday and they are really light, but mostly stock stuff. I did not look at the way they were wired but I'd guess there's not anything there that they don't need. BTW thanks again to Buildem and dieselracer for letting me know about the OCMA funfly in Orange County that took place yesterday. And for sharing with me all the deatils about how these Blades are built. I know it took alot of trial and error to accumulate the knowledge they both have. They are both true gentlemen and great ambassadors of the hobby. I hope to post a video of both Buildem and dieselracer soon (dieselracer flew with 5-6 stitches in the palm of his hand, not a problem for him).

Wow, wish I could've been there at the funfly with you all. Just a little to far for me to drive - 3000 miles

Yah, the razor windings really are heavy gauge and it's also the coggy-ist inrunner I ever felt. Has a very quality feel to it. As far as I'm concerned it's "big magic in a little can!!"

I'm really happy with that motor too. Mitch have you ever tried an inrunner on the tail? The Campos boys use Medusa and I use a Feigao; I don't see how any other type of motor can do the same kind of job as Buildem's or diesel's. Mine is pretty good too. Does you tail hold no matter what?

Funny you should ask . . .

Keep in mind, the outrunner I'm using on the tail weighs half what the feigao does:

Once I installed the futaba 401, my new T-bird 9, and got it propped right (4x2 paddle prop) it's working unbelievable. This weekend I wanted to check and see how much "hold power" I had available from this little tail motor while using the Razor 350 main motor. I smoothly applied FULL collective/power (tail holds great) then gave it full right yaw command. Still have enough tail power to rapidly spin the nose right even while compensating for full torque.

What more could you ask?

(This pic is back when I was using the stock V1 housing and the wrong prop.) This is what she looks like now (minus the HDX300 of course):

You can't argue with success. Are you depending on the double-sided tape alone to hold on the servos on? I use cable ties too, after I crashed due to an elevator servo coming loose (and I use the 3M scotch brand which is good stuff).

On my stock Pro 2 I have cable ties around the two back servos but just tape on the front servo. However, I use the 3M stuff you get at Home Depot and it's just about impossible to pull the servo off even when you want to!

Of course, Bladezilla has bolt on servos. . .

Here's a question for Bob or diesel: what kind of rotor blades are the Compos' using? Strictly wood? Carbon? and if carbon where are they getting them cuz I can't find a supply for a good 250mm blades (the microheli ones are tailheavy!!)

I saw stock looking wood blades on diesel's and buildem's blades. I get mine from Helidirect. The ones I just received are slightly heavier than the ones I've gotten from them before (13g each). They used to weigh in at about 10g each.

The feigao holds fine, just that the motor shaft is really short. too short for my liking. as well as you can get it repaired if you damage it. It was great meeting you. I also run an 800mah lipo too. thats the one i flew in the video Bob was took. It was great meeting you. too bad you didnt bring your CP. We could have looked at it and played with it.

Theres more to the tail then if it holds on full collective climbouts. But how it holds in fast reverse flight, how consistant the piro rate is, how the tail responds to input, how fast the tail stops when you tell is to stop. I like the Medusa my self. doesnt mean its the only option.

I use zip ties on my servos. When i had the microheli frame on mine, i hated the bolt on servos. It would break the case on an easy crash and strip the servo. while with the plastic it doesnt. The carbon anti rotation bracket would break the swash plate. when flying hard or even flying inverted the tail section would flex alot, causeing the tail to do funny things.

I use the stock eflite wood blades. I dont like the knock off woode blades. they are not as nice at the eflite's

Every really well flown BCPP I've seen or seen videos of had a Medusa tail motor. I just bought the feigaos before I knew about them and am not unhappy.

Mitch, I had an elevator servo come off in flight (not zip tied) while flipping. Now all servos are zip tied. I might try the eflite blades again now. I'll try anything that diesel or Buildem recommend; as I said 'seeing is believing'.

The price always turned me off but the wide cord and extremely light weight seems to be the ticket.

Sometimes Doug there's no cheap way around it. It can cost a lot of money to figure that out. I've also avoided those blades because of cost. Some things you can't put a price on; for all the rest there's Mastercard.

So a 700E is faster than your 600 with a 12S pack? That's hard to believe. What kind of pack does that heli have?

So anyway, getting back to the Razor Blade and my efforts to copy Buildem and dieselracers helis I am gradually changing the other two BCPPs to kinda replicate theirs too. I just took a GY401 off an Esky HB King2 and put it on a Feigao Blade (Feigao main and Feigao tail). What a difference in the way the tail holds! I don't care about the extra weight (26.7g for that gyro) this gyro works every time. Unlike the G90 that sometimes holds great and sometimes lets the tail go anyway it wants to. Crashed it three times today just dialing it in (mostly inverted and flips). It's pretty good now, not as zippy as the Razor Blade. Weight is the big thing; got to get rid of as much as possible.
