Hey Boyd:

Have you seen the Sikorsky S-67 Blackhawk attack helicopter. It looks a lot like the Cheyenne without the pusher. Here are a couple photo's and a video of it from You-tube as well

Does anyone else find the Blackhawk version to be, well, kinda "soft" looking? Like a bottle nose dolphin at an aquarium??? The Cheyenne just seems a little "harsher"(pardon my lack of vocabulary); more suited to the prefix "attack". I'm glad you chose the Cheyenne, Richard, its going to be a knockout.

The Blackhawk would likely not have looked so soft if you were in the CPG's rectile.

True.....

Dolphins do deserve a little credit anyhow.

Richard, when this hijack is over, are you going to post any more details on your mechanics?

Cheers,

Patrick

Ah ha you were not looking at the dolphin. Now I know where the soft part came from. They have pills for that now.

I have no issue with this hijack I will have some more pictures hopefully tomorrow. I think you Cheyenne fans will like what you see. Patrick., as soon as I get the mechanics back from Germany I will discuss what modifications were made and why on my Jetcat PHT3-3. I will also discuss how I am going to drive the tailrotor. I am taking a couple of days off from the office to get some things done around the home front and to get some other things on the Cheyenne completed. I plan to get the plug glassed this week then on to final prepping and detailing of the plug for the mold build ups. My initial mold count for the main parts is at 7.

Hoverup, that's great, got any extra?

Richard, are you going to power the tail via the turbine, or have you considered an e-setup? There's some good research on the direct drive tails being done right now. I look forward to your next post.

Cheers fellas.

Hey guys,

Here are some more pictures of the progress on the plug for my Cheyenne. I will be carving the canopy and intakes from foam next. In these pictures you can now see the Stub Wings and tail feathers, way cool!!

I can almost smell the fiberglass resin

Hey Patrick,

I am still considering both options, but I favor an E-set up to power the pusher prop at this time. Mainly because I am not sure how much turbine power would be lost to the pusher and gearbox???

Twin E-Power...

With the size of that ship, you can easily use two motors; one for driving the main and one to drive the tail assembly. The process of picking the motor for lifting the heli is easy and you can always guess at the needed watts (and rpm) for the tail. If the selected tail motor is inappropriate, you can always cheaply replace it with another.

Just a quick thought...

But yes, do give e-Power the highest consideration. Okay, turbine is cool too....

Richard,

OK this is not fair. I have been bitten. The wings really gave this some personality.

Who gets fuse #2?

Where do I sign up?

Wow.

If you go with Direct e-drive on the tail, I'll forward you all my test info on motor/esc/batt combos. I've got a few motor mounts in CAD(see gallery for an example), if you need any inspiration.
I use a Kora 15-14 & 15-16 on a jive 80lv, 7700rpm off 4s or 6s, with lots of headroom. 26 pound rig.

Cees V, the Dutch F3C Nats champ, gave me this info on his DD tail:

"I use the twin motor now for a year and works great. have always 100% gyro and more power to the main roterhead.
Scorpion 3014 with 880kv or 3026, 4S 2200 30 c packs SLS up to 92 amps peak and jive 60lv"

Again, wicked build Richard.

fla heli boy,

I like to think I recognize quality when I see it. I know I did that with my Scale Jet 76.

I see something here that is worth every dollar. If I am lucky enough to acquire one of Richards fuses, hint hint, I would be honored to try and do it justice.

Cape Coral. I am a Floridian, Born and raised east coast, Vero Beach to West Palm area. Just happen to live in Yankee ville NY. (I say that with love and compaction. NY is a good place and the drivers are just as bad here as in Florida). We make a trip to FL every winter at Christmas time and always bring a heli or two. May have to look you up.

Thanks guys for all of the encouraging comments. It is amazing how little information there is out there concerning this helicopter. I sure could have used a sectional drawing showing the shape of the bulkheads. If it were not for the Anigrand Models kit and all of the photos and helpful information that I received from folks here on RR and Scalerc.... this build would have been much more difficult. I am trying my best to produce as accurate a Cheyenne as I can. I am however, certain that I will miss something along the way, but that will just give someone something to point out But hey it will certainly look like a Cheyenne.

I will be shaping the plugs for the Canopy and intakes soon.

Hey Papatango, thanks for offer of your research. I will most definately be interested in your data....Thanks agian!!!!

Cheers...

Thanks Jeremy:

This is great stuff. That 30mm cannon trivia is amazing! Hitting a 10" target from a fixed position at 2 miles is a feat in of its self, but consistantly from a moving helicopter; wow! Also I did not know that ship #1009 used F104 ejection seats...neat! Both are from Lockheed and the same area though.

Just a couple of pictures showing the build up process for the canopy.

First two layers of foam showing a plywood laminate on either side to define the flat center section for canopy

Another picture showing two more foam laminates. You can clearly see the plywood and how it defines the center glass. Formers will be inserted next at 90 degrees to the center formers to give the overall shape before the remaining foam is applied.

Side view.

I have had to take a few days off of building the Cheyenne. I have had some issues with my shoulder again. But onwards.....

Building the canopy plug continued...............

This photo shows the installed formers.

Here you see the foam blocks glued into place.

Another view of the canopy prior to shaping.

Ready for fiberglass....(epoxy resin)..........

Overall shot with the shaped canopy plug in place.

These are my weapons of choice for shaping foam.

I use a Sherwin Williams "Sure Form" to knock the foam down quickly to the rough shape, followed by 80 grit paper, then 120. Next I use foam sanding blocks for contouring. These blocks (Finger nail buffing blocks) can be found at your local beauty supply shop in a variety of grits. Then lastly 400 wet dry paper.

I am going to make two molds from the canopy plug. First, a polished fiberglass plug to use for Vacu-forming a super smooth canopy, and then I will clean and lightly sand the origional plug down and then add all of the frame details to create a fiberglass outer frame to go over the clear plastic canopy glazing in one piece.
