MFA Hughes 500D from hobby lobby.. not the sport 500

Many many moons back, my dad bought me one of these metal monsters. It looked kinda cool at the time.. Fixed pitch full bodied 500 that used airplane motors and airplane radios. We thought it'd make a nice heli to learn on, and avove all, it was CHEAP!!!! We strapped in a Fox .50, and we NEVER could get it off the ground it was so heavy!! The fiberglass was sky blue gelcoated, and VERY thick (and brittle).

My question is, has anyone out there ever flown one of these, and if so, how well did it fly?? I off-loaded mine at an auction about 10 years ago, but was just curious.. I see the year after we bought that full bodied one, they came out with the Sport 500, which looks identical but the body was cut down to just a small portion of the front, and they canned the rest of the body to shave off weight.

Ever fly one??

I did.

It was the worst helicopter ever built! I went round and round with the inventer on its design. The tail blew apart in mid air, several times. The metal was too heavy and it always over heated! You did the right thing!

MFA Sport 500

I just retired my Sport 500. I got it used with gyro and floats for cheap. I did learn hovering with it (ok, and a lot of sim time). It's definitely a bucket of bolts. I never did blow up the tail, but did break about a million teeter wires, a jesus bolt, lose the pin holding the bell to the tail drive, break a motor mount, etc. All this and I didn't crash it. It just fell apart. I just took the radio and engine out this week and noticed another fractured motor mount and it's 1/8" aluminum! It's definitely a mover and shaker. Mine has the clear plastic canopy. Even with the weight of the Hobbico floats it hovers.

Onward and upward... The radio goes in a Raptor 30 and the Super Tiger .40 engine may go in an X-Cell 30...

MFA 500

Deckerv,
I had a MFA 500D full body glass fuse, fixed pitch, that was a joy to fly------but no sky tricks------ just out and back and hovering. The actual mechanics left a lot to be desired but as you so eloquently stated,"Cheap" was the key. It used aircraft radio and engines, which in most cases, one already had and it would even fly without a gyro----at least mine did, but you had to be really on your toes. You stated,"it was heavy" and you were right ----it was, but the fuse really looked scale.

damm good helli I still have 3

the colective pitch model can loop & roll with good altitude the only problems are that for every minute flying you have ten in maintenance

they still fly well

Sport 500

I had two of them. You have to really like working on them, but they will fly. I learned to hover with it......without a gyro. Bought a collective head for it and that picked up the performance some(no more climbing and descending all of the time). Most of the maintenance was due to just bad engineering, had to work on it about 1 hour for every 10 minutes of flight time........but it did teach me how to hover and some limited forward flight. It also made me appreciate my Shuttle ZX that much more when I bought it. MUCH easier to fly, and NO maintenance, unless it contacted earth when I didn't want it to.
