My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I have an old mechanical mixer type Hirobo Vertol. Originally it only had a rate gyro on the 'Tail rotor' function and I intend to replace this with a 401. I had also thought to use a 401 in heading hold mode on the elevator - would this be wise???? As it is one of the first Hirobo Vertols and as such quite a classic, I don't wish to risk it in trying something I know nothing about.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		On elevator it probably will be o.k. ,,, but on rudder no .. I hooked the Trex chinook up for a test and on elevator the 401 was o.k. but on rudder it would hunt really bad and that was with the sensitivity way down and the delay at different settings .
That said .. it would be worth a try as your bigger bird might react different !!!!!

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I am not an expert on this, and I have not tried it, but I would NOT recommend using a 401 in "heading hold" mode on the elevator of the older Vertol.

I also have one of the originals (over 20 years old now!), and I have used both mechanical and piezo gyros on elevator with success. I now use a Skookum system which IS heading hold, BUT, it has quite a bit of additional electronics involved making heading hold useable for cyclic control.

I would think that if just using a heading hold gyro on cyclic would work, we would not have all of the complex systems that are now out, or evolving, to work with the flybarless heads.

The older Vertol will be quite flyable in low wind conditions using a 401 on elevator and rudder in “rate” mode. Just be sure that you have the recommended throws on elevator (very, very little!), and keep the gyro gain on elevator quite low to start, or it will oscillate very violently.

Thanks for the comments. Being on the wrong side of 50, things can happen too quick for the grey matter to follow these days. I will probably go for one of the newer 'multi-blade' gyro's as I have found in my four blade Vario Bolkow that it does calm things done a bit; that is unless the gain is too high....!!!!!!>>>>

Just finished up building my Chinook (Vario size gasser).
Have done some flights onw and have tried some stuff already.
The GY should be there where it belongs, in flying nitro broomsticks.
For this application...not good. Let's be honoust if we need to get gain down to 20 to 30 % and as in my case turn down the limit function as well, we are in the wrong direction. A friend of mine once build a gy 401 in a plane and complained that the thing was to damn aggresive (well he never tried a CSM SL720. that one is aggresive)and that he needed to reduce gain almost to 0. He then bought a nice gyro for fixed wing a GYA 352 and he is in heaven. That got me thinking on our Vertols, the fact that they are no way the same as the broomsticks, they will have more the movement of a big plane. high inertia etc. So what I will go and try now is that GYA 351 or 352. To me it looks that this will be better for an application like this.

Tried to fly my Chinook wit HH on both Nick and Yaw.......bad idea. On nick I was steering more than on normal mode and the yaw function ?? Haha what a laugh. Hunting all the time. I do want to try it again but with a fixed wing gyro, that one is smoother so hope that works.
