Well, Ross, When you live in Alaska, anything over 2 stories is a skyscraper!
The position of the propeller. My last several Slow Sticks and now my new plane have all been pushers. Leaving the entire front of the plane open for my cameras.

What may be a good exercise (if not already done) is to say factor in a HC-5 or similar camera weight wise and do some sums to see the size of the plane needed to carry that sort of equipment. Bearing in mind a larger plane would likely be more stable, bigger is certainly better in this case.

I'm on it bro. Thats why I built my own hot wire foam cutter. I am now in the process of building a large plane for the sole purpose of carrying a HD camcaorder. I am very much looking forward to this project. I will keep you in the loop Ross.

I have no doubt that this project will produce some really good results Kevo. Look forward to seeing pics of the build and the demo HD footage when available.

BTW - the the AP2000i preferred over FMS copilot for stabilisation?

My AP2000i was a leftover from my heli days. I had it so I used it. The FMA copilot would be fine. Either one is particularly useful when flying FPV.

Hi Guys,
You can see the plane here - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...7&postcount=551
It's set up with 5 cameras that take simultaneous pictures in each of forward, back, left, right and down.
Piloting is via UNAV 3500 autopilot, not using it at present due to other projects but hope to pull it out again later in summer.
The plane is a twin boom electric glider, approx 2.5m wing span. It's optomised for endurance & with little weight on board can easily do 2-3 hour flights. Palo did a 1 hour flight on two little 1.3ah LiIon packs.

The central pod is just bolted on so it's a modular design, I have a seperate pod with a single camera with 3 axis gyro stabilisation for surveying purposes.

Any other questions shout away.

Just want to update on my ex-client's story.

He's been doing quite well the last few weeks. Secured a few jobs, and then some.
But two days ago he called me saying he'd just had a crash which totaled his $6K videocam. There was minimal damage on his modified slow stick though.
Apparently, the plane was flying perfectly when suddenly it went into a diving death spiral.
He suspects its a glitch, but can't really be sure (never happened before).

I guess there's really no short cuts, 'easy' and 'cheap' ways to doing AP and/ or AV.

Live and learn.

OK, I have to ask. Because I am either not reading this right or the guy paid way too much for his camera.

What slow stick can carry a $6000 video camera?
and
What camera was he using that cost $6000?

The best camera for getting a shot is a camera that's always ready to take it. A heli can lift a lot more than a fixed wing of the same dimensions, so it's more likely to be in the trunk of your SUV waiting to take off. A fixed wing either has some wings which have to be assembled or is too small to lift the same payload.

I use a MagpieAP from Mountain Models, much better platform than the Slowstick. I decided once to use the MagpieAP over the heli out over water, it has a side view camera, and will glide a bit if needed to return to land, glad I did, I feel much better flying it than the heli off a coastline. I cringe at the stories of helicams at the bottom of lakes and in saltwater.
Most of the jobs Ive done recently though have been from full scale.
Outside air is COLD on the fingers at even 4000 feet and 75 knots!

Re Topic: What can an RC Heli do that a Slow Stick can't?

Hi aramsdell

As stated the individuals in the fountain shot were apart of the Shoot. And all safety procedures were upheld. I do not appreciate your uneducated remarks. Understand, on thing it is the uneducated gossiper of run ryder that is bad for this industry not the professional that has been making his living for years at this. Do I need to fly a TREX450camship to comply with your stringent safety standards??? Have you ever been on a set? flown for a director? worked with cast and crew?
Say something worth saying, type something worth reading, post a video that might inspire another one of us to do the same. Don't be a mediocre worthless RR/Helifreak Gossip whore.

Axemanclint, I love that video you pointed to except the guy is intentionally flying over peopl, children! That's not good for us.

You're Certainly not one of the "us" professionals, you fly a f#(%ing toy.

Post a video you've shot, hell a picture, why don't you enlighten me.

... and no my sh!t isn't CGI

Karbonbird,

This video just convinced me that with the right fixed wing platform, it is indeed superior to helis in the area of high altitude video. I imagine the footage will be even better with the addition of: a roll gyro, geared pan/tilt and post stabilization. The only down side seems to be the take off/landing space requirement.

Flew my first SS with a 1.5 meter wing span yesterday. It was also my first ever fixed wing that could actually FLY!

The first two flights I had horrific landings but survived with no damage.
Broke the GWS motor mount on the 3rd landing / crash. Went home and reinforced it with carbon fibre.

Went back to the field, adjusted trims and flew again. With the rudder, aileron and elevators dialed in, flying is dead easy.
All I can say is, WOW! This thing floats! Takes only 10 % throttle to keep it from stalling!

Take off runway is about 5 feet , landings a.k.a. crashing, takes between 20 feet and 0 feet (tall grass LOL).

Flying this thing is fun, even the crashings!
Will need to perfect my landings before loading on my G9. AP job's already lined up.

Crashing is pretty affordable.

A G9 is a bit heavy for a slowstick, it must be modified/upgraded to carry 1lb.

I'm sure you've seen Burnt Offerings thread.
