Update

Well, due to the untimely demise of the first Seahawk due to my belt dimension challenged brain, we are back where we left off.

Doing another Seahawk allowed me to rethink some basic things. Actually, Copter Docter helped me rethink.

1.)Cut out the bulkheads to lighten up the tail. It is not a lot but everylittle bit helps.

2.)Make the tail removable for maintainence. The tail area where the screws go in has carbon fibre taped and ply blocks for holding power.

3.)I wanted the top hatch to be hinged and had a BVM Jets hinge set laying around.

It is time for flight testing and checking to see if the tail is sorted out. If we are good there then I will get busy scaling.

Copter Doctor, or anyone building a Century Blackhawk, how are you or did you cut open the doors. I am debating doing it.

I am building one now and have looked at all your ideas. I can't find anything about mounting the horizontal stabilizer. There is no hinges or mounting hardware in the kit. Did you just mount it in a permanent position?

I thought you just dinged it up pod and boom until I reread it!! Bummer man. But you'll come back stronger and have a better machine in the end. Nice work BTW.

Having worked on the Blackhawk for about 20 years I'm happy to see one being modeled successfully. One point of interest is that the "dog house" on the 'Hawk is the fairing just forward of where the tailcone is separated on the model forward to where the transition section/tailboom break is. We call the cowling in front of the rotor the Sliding Pylon Cover. Originally I thought that making the cowling slide as the original would be great, however after thinking about it for a while, the hinged setup looks like it works better. Keep up the good work and keep the pictures coming!

after cutting the doors open on the first hawk i did, i vowed never again if i built another but dammit i cant help it. if i dont doi it, i am going to wish i did and there goes sleep at nights!!! i had to beef up the posts arount the windshields where the door posts meet with them before cutting and since the door panel lines werent even, i had to make sure i had enough room to make a cut. beware!!!! when you cut the doors out, they lose their form or curvature so make sure its what yo uwant to do before yo do it. to help them keep their shape, i lyered them with a couple layers of course (or heavy) fiberglass cloth and finishing resin before cutting them out. i then lined the door edges on the inside of the fuse with 1/8th masking tape just inside the door line. then i glassed the edge. this creates a recessed area for the doors to seat in. oh, i also cut the doors open partway, not completely out before the fiberglassing so when i finally cut them out for good, its an easier task (still a pain in the a$$ but easier)
you see why i vowed never to do it again? the vows were followed by lots of swearing too
of course it didnt turn out perfect being it was the first time and next time it will actually be easier now that i have done it a few times on other bodies.
here are a few teaser pix. mine isnt a seahawk, its is however the seahawk's land luvin' cousin, the UH-60L seen all day here at mother rucker.

Copter Doctor,
Okay, it all makes sense. One thing though, what did you use to cut the doors?

I use to build scales plank warbirds and through the years of doing that learned a trick or two...

There was a guy who did some awesome work and here is what he would do on fibreglass when he wanted to cut out a hatch or door.
1.)Take clear Monokote and apply with mild heat to cover the door...
2.)Then he would lay up several layers of heavy cloth over the Monokote.
3.)Once it dries it is fairly clear and he would mark the outline.
4.)He would then pull off the Monokote, door and all and cut it out.
5.)Then he would use the new door to mark the cut line and cut out the opening.
6.)Then he would hinge, etc...

Hover testing is complete. All is good. I want to do some FF and then strip.

My camera is out of pocket so I will shoot some photos later.

Update-details

For me...this stage is the most fun...detailing

I use blue foam carved to shape, then fibreglass. Lightweight
details.

Styrene, bits and pieces, even a cigar tube....

All kinds of tricks...one of the new ones is small holes drilled to simulate screen...thanks Copter Doctor.

I will be in this stage for awhile...I have a lot of bits to make to convert this to a believable Seahawk. That said, I am in no hurry at this stage. Simultaneous to this is I will begin to build the light system.

By the way, it flys great.

The details are looking great! I wouldn't even paint the radome; they look EXACTLY like that! Exposed fiberglass and all. If its not too late, your forward ESM Recievers are sitting a little high. Theres a forward data-link radome that mounts in between them too. That cigar tube looks to be a good size match for the aft data-link. Watching youu build this makes ME excited. There's always a place in my heart for that old bird...

Hi Bear,
Yep...I got to looking at the ESM receivers (good to know what they are...thanks) and changed them.

Take a look and let me know if the look better.

The work continues slow but sure.

The forward DataLink (your cigar tube) is more underneath. Top edge kinda blends at the same line as top edge of the ESM. Just "pushed" in more. Where its at now is where the FLIR mounts. The mount itself is kind of a shelf that bolts on, and the FLIR bolts down on top. I can tell anything you need about this A/C. These pix are from Frittslogic's gallery. He's got some good under belly shots (from a submarine!).

Thanks Bear. It is too bad that no one makes a Seahawk fuse. The Century Blackhawk fuse is fine...but is quite a stretch from the Seahawk...

My kit bashing will get it close...unles you have a trained eye.
