Scale Model RC Helicopters > Century Blackhawk converted to a Seahawk...Trex600e

Richard Morgan made me a great deal on a new Century Blackhawk fuse. I have a Trex600e sitting around currently in boom & pod form that might work out.

The dimensions on the mechanics look pretty good. What concerns me is the weight of the finished bird and power available. I can go to a more powerful motor and ESC.

If that doesn't seem to work I do have a Rappy 50 with a Hyper that can be a donor. I want to run a 4 blade head and tail.

If anyone has taken on the Blackhawk with Epower, please let me know.

I am still sorting out whether to do a Pavehawk, Seahawk or Jayhawk.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Richard Morgan is a pretty good guy, he made me a good deal on an AS 550 with mechs and a great 3 bladed head.
You should have no prob using a 600E rex to power that fuse, their are so many power, pinion and motor combinations out there you'll be able to work it out.
Good luck
Pete

it will work fine with the 600, i first flew mine with a hawk and an os32 on its very first flight but that was just mechs and fuselage shell. if you dont load it up with too much detail stuff you should be fine. gotta warn you though, that thing with the long tail and short nose needs a ton of weight to get it balanced so easy on building with regards to weight.

Thanks Doc,
Yep I will watch the weight...My other concern is the tail drive. I have the Century gear box and would like to use the Align Trex tail.

We shall see.

I would like to do it too. how do you plan to make the 50 degrees tail?
my trex 600e has the original belt driven tail, do you think I should change it to torque tube?

i say lose all that gearbox stuff, use a flex cable drive. use a beefy one, one bigger than the size of a car's speedo cable. it is however a bit heavier, but not too heavy and when done correctly, gives waaay more peace of mind for reliability than the gearbox setup. dont get me wrong, gearboxes work, but they have many more points of possible failure than the cable setup and are a bit more critical in setting up/installing. if your trex is the belt driven version, starwood makes an adaptor from belt to shaft so up can use the cable system. if it is already a shaft/tube drive, you are halfway there

well yes and no. the tube drive and belt drive are two different systems for the t-rex. if it has the tube drive, then the output shaft from the mechs will be coupled to the cable of the flex drive unit. if its the belt, you can either convert the mechs side to the parts used for the tube drive, or buy that adaptor unit from starwood that converts the belt system for use with a flex cable. the first way is probably cheaper. then you would be good to go.

Ok, can anyone clue me in on how the 50 degree tail box works. I don't see how the wire/tube/etc. fits into and is secured on each end.

And the gear box.

Richard Morgan provided this shot...I like the scheme and am leaning strongly this way.

Will test fit the mechanics tomorrow and start in earnest.

That is one very unusual SeaHawk. Not only the livery but the tail wheel make it unique for the USN. The tail wheel here looks the same as the BlackHawk and the USAF version, whereas the SeaHawk and the USCG JayHawk use the pictured tail wheel configuration shown below. Don't think this one is meant for ship board operations.

It will make a very unique model for sure.

cable tail drive required.

It appears with the height of the Trex mechanics I will have to go with a cable drive tail.

If anyone can share insight on how to do a cable drive successfully, I would appreciate it.
thanks

The easiest way is to go to Starwood Models and get Dr. Tim's adapter. Then you can use a "suitably sized" cable to drive the TR reliably...Don't try using the small "Speedometer" gear sized cables as they won't last!!!!
You can use the stock Align Torque Tube tail rotor Gearbox and attach the cable to the fitting off of the drive shaft (remove the pin and replace it with a set screw.)

Can you please give the link to "Dr. Tim's adapter" in Starwood Models?

Thanks,
