This is my second hawk and I love them to death but I have three flights on my second one all which were hovering, maybe 12 min total flight time. I smelt something burning on the third flight and landed. As soon as I landed it quit. I tried turning the blades and they would not turn. I took everything apart and found plastic shaving all over the carb. The liner had moved up on the clutch and started eating away at the fan. All is good, just wanted to let everyone know. I want to get the metal clutch and fan but my pocket could not afford that yet so I just purchased two fans and two clutches today. I will try and put pictures up later.

Again I love the hawk pros.

Your doing something wrong. Only time I ever heard of issues like that is due to clutch being on to loose or engine not aligned right etc. Check over everything when you get it back toghter. make sure you have proper clearance.

That can also occur if the clutch liner broke loose. I always check that it is securely glued in the few times I have needed to install a new bell.

If they are securely attached they will not come loose and work up into the fan.

If it was a new bell, check with them and they may replace it and the fan at N/C.

[quote]The liner had moved up on the clutch and started eating away at the fan. That's a little strange for the liner to move up and eat away at anything. Sounds like maybe the bolt on top of the fan came loose and the fan moved up and started to eat away at the fan shroud and caused the blades not to turn. I'm probably wrong but as described doesn't make sense to me for some reason. Update your findings so as to clarify the situation.

If it doesn't fly sell it!

Old fart hit the nail on the head the liner started easing up and started eating away at the fan. Nothing I did wrong or century. I think the glue just came loose. I am at work and will post pictures tonight. My first hawk did not do this even after about 5 gallons through it.

I guess after 23 or 24 years of beating the air into submission with an R/C heli, and having spent the last 14 years or so logging a lot of flight time on all the different helis Century has produced, one has a chance to have seen or experienced most things involving these machines.

Now if only I could learn to fly like some of them younger fellas.

Where and when did you get that clutch bell in your second Hawk?

Was one of the starts with it, a "hot start"?

That is the one from the kit. I do not know what you mean hot start.
Is that when the engine is hot and then you restart it.

It is when you are holding the rotor head while starting the engine with the throttle way up by mistake and the clutch burning up until you can throttle back.

a hot start is when you start the motor and it goes to full throttle right away, while your holding onto the blades. your throttle stick may be up, wrong flight mode, wrong model, reversed throttle, forgetting to turn the Receiver on...and so on.

its normally a guaranteed wrecked clutch liner.

it happens to all of us.

This is crazy after putting in my new clutch, three hovers later my main gear started having play in it where the bearing goes in the middle. I purchased two new ones from towerhobbies and now it is hovering great again. I guess my hovering is putting a lot of stress on the machine. lol

....my main gear started having play in it where the bearing goes in the middle.

I have been flying these helis for years, as have a number of others at our field, and have been monitoring this forum for as long, and I have never heard of this happening.

Many years ago, I had a friend (he was a well extablished heli flyer who even wrote articles for a magazine) have a problem where the maingear had to much vertical play, so it would disengage the crown from tail drive pinion. After looking over his heli, I found that he did not assemble the hardened sleeve part of the assembly properly (we still tease him about it to this day ). He had not fully inserted the big C-Clip that goes at the bottom of the hardened center piece, into the groove that is there. This locates the lower part of the the maingear to the mainshaft. Consequently it would always slip down.

I would guess the one at the top is equally important to keep it from slipping up

There is a clear picture of it on page 15 of the Hawk Pro manual.
