Why can't someone remanufacture the Cricket or a similar heli? I've owned a few fixed-pitch helis, but none of them were a Cricket nor did they give the same experience that I had when trimming out a newbees Cricket. Not a large heli like the .40 size Rebel or HoverStar, but a .25-.32 size.
Can someone get the rights to maunufacture it? If not, how about a clone like the Vibe clone. I finally saw one and couldn't believe it. I wondered why anyone would upgrade the aluminum swahplate for a plastic one. When I realized it had parts unlike my Vibe 50 such as substituted materials, I knew it was the clone everyone is talking about.
How about pieces to make a short kit? No bearings, blades, or wood radio try. No Hirobo parts either.

I can answer that in two words. Cost and demand. I can tell you first hand. I am currently reproducing some critical Cricket parts. I spent a lot of money and time, but the demand doesn't yet really seem to be there. It costs considerable money to tool up for just a few parts. To reproduce a complete Cricket would cost considerably more to manufacture than it did back in the day. Beside that, I don't believe the demand would be there for it. Today's modeler doesn't want a fixed pitch heli. They all want high speed and 3-D. I'm afraid that we senior helicopter citizens are the last of those that can appreciate the "models gone by" so to speak, and the era for that matter.

Personally, I'm not reproducing the parts to get rich. I would like to eventually recoupe my money invested, of course, but the real reason is for the Cricket itself, and it's devoted followers. Flying this little helicopter is majic to me. It truly transports me to another place and time, whenever I fly it. A time when life was simpler, my old flying buddies were around, and most important to me, a time when r/c helicopters were challenging and interesting. A time when building a helicopter was as much fun as flying it. Not like today. To me, everything is composite, looks the same, and jerks around the sky like a dragonfly on crack.

Anyhow, reproducing these parts just adds to my enjoyment and involvement with this helicopter. I hope that if there are others out there who feel as I do, my efforts keep you flying your Crickets on a regular basis and not just as a novelty. I'm happy to help my fellow Cricket flyers any way that I can, so give 'em a whirl!

Thanks for the rapid response. I never owned a Cricket, but helped a couple of guys setup and trim them to fly. I would like to get one myself as I am fascinated by the simplicity of the machine. It was a great deal of fun flying it. I recently finished rebuilding a Concept SRX and flew it. I enjoyed it, but like you said the Cricket set you back in time. Just looking at the radio tray wood construction reminds one of days gone by for many different helis. And the clear canopy halves you glue together with tinting the windows with Testors transparent red or blue was a fun chore. Wrapping the blades with shelf paper or heat shrink tubing. Enough(sigh).

CRICKET

GMP Cricket,I have to admit ,I have always been a GMP fan when it came down to it.The guys at the field would always want to have the newest most high tech thing for heli's that was available and that applies to this day,so why buy a cricket when there are so many heli's out there..its plain,SIMPLE TO BUILD,and has a appeal that alot of new guys to the hobby just won't find interesting unless you were around back then when they first came out,a heli pilot was the guy who be looked at as a NUT!!!the guys that fly planes would ask is it going to fly this time???and when it did the there was a alot of (HeyI want to get one of those can you teach me to fly one?)all of sudden your the official heli expert at your flyig field!!and a gyro?!?!?! only those that weren't that good!needed a gyro!!!it was considered a crutch!!!those were the days 70's 80's !! crickets are like the studabakers cars!!i got a tiger bye the tail!!what would acricket look like today if GMP was still around producing helis the orignal cricket and the new cricket II that probably would have looked like a smaller version of the rebel, who knows!!I bought MR GORHAMS last Cricket that he had in his possesion before he passed away..it will be a permanent heli in my fleet!!I hope I can make it to IRCHA next year with my crickets and the rest of my GMP fleet!!if you got one ,YOU better hang on to it!AND IF YOU DON'T YOU BETTER FIND ONE BEFORE THERE ALL GONE!!

Ah, I was right. There are others that feel as I do !

Yes I agree. If you want a Cricket, get one before they are all gone. Also, today, because of myself and others, there is more available to keep those Crickets flying. As long as the demand is there, I'm glad to provide the parts that I do. Once that demand is gone, who knows. My point is: now's probably the best time in years to invest in this vintage heli.

Well I finally bought 2 Crickets. Both need engines and radio. One is flyable with an engine rebuild or replacement and the other needs an engine and tailboom with copper wire struts, metal fins, and tail blades and grips with ball arms not broken. Both have cracked canopies and blades that may have termites.

I plan to do a complete teardown on both this winter when it starts to rain and snow. My heli buddies think I'm nuts, but I miss the simplicity of the Crickets when I helped others get theirs into the air. The only GMP heli I had of my own was a Cobra. I will need and want Cricket spare parts in the near future.

I need to do more research on replacement parts for hard to get at the moment stuff like the T/R grips and hub with bearings.

Steve, how are the tailbooms coming?

Well on and off track. As far as the booms, everything is ok. I have run into some glitches in my personal life, job, etc., and I have had to put my modelling aside, tempororily. I have to finish the jig I'm building, and start drilling and milling. It sounds like more that it really is. Hopefully ( and realistically ) I should have something within the next couple of weeks. All the tubing has been cut and end formed. All that's left is the drilling, milling, and bending. Too much invested to stop now! I PROMISE you guys will be the first to know. Thanks for your patience.

PS I still have all the other stuff available.

Hey guys, I just bought a cricket at a local RC auction last weekend and I'd like to get it flying. It has an Enya 29 with no muffler. It is also missing the canopy. Otherwise It is in superb condition. Does anyone know where I could get a replacement canopy as well as the proper muffler?

BTW there are no electronics as well (I have plenty stuff for this), and I don't think this bird has ever seen the air. Please help me get this sweet machine airborne. Thanks!

ajverm,
Try mphelis.com for $25. I orderd 2 Cricket canopies plus 1 Hughes 300 canopy. Fast service. I received my box today, but haven't had a chance to look inside.
Don't waste your time with a used canopy. Paint it the way you want it.
