Synergy R/C Synergy N9 > How to make a lighter N9 with great power

So i'm really loving my current N9 so much that I want to build a 2nd bird. This time I would like to build one with a lil more power to weight ratio.
For power, I'm wanting another YS but which one? Cuerrently I'm running a YS 91 ST.
Who has a good and lighter frame?
I'm thinking I'm going to try the Align servos for the cyclic cause their power is comparable to the 8717s but much lighter (not to mention half the cost).
For the rec, I'm thinking of trying a spectrum 7100R (whichever one has the voltage reg as well as gov in it).
Has any tried a lightweight Cf book from anther heli on the N9 (like the Trex 700)?
I've already purchased every Hyperperformance part that's available and it's sitting in a box waiting for the frame.

Get a set of Tyler Bonta's CF frames - light weight, a breeze to assemble and eliminates the front radio tray with an adjustable CF radio tray. With the AR7100R you can eliminate the regulator and and run straight 7.4v to cyclic assuming you are using servos that can handle the higher voltage. I am running a YS91SR, RJX pipe, AR7100R,
8717HV's, Spartan Gyro - very lightweight set-up and 4mm flybar conversion with SWE paddles.

My FBH N9 (tyler bonta) came in at 10.2lbs with 1/4 fuel. Thats 2oz lighter than my trex 700. Running YS91SR and 1950 headspeed its freakin ballistic. Pretty much same set up as fr8brkr

Thanks guys and I've already read your thread using the FBH frames. The only thing that concerned me was the mods that you had to do to the frames or was this only cause you were going FBL? I would go FBL, but I'm not there yet (an probably not for another year or so).

As for the 8717s, it just seems like 230+ oz/in of torque is a bit extreme when I consider that my current servos are only pushing ~ 125 oz/in of torque. Not disqualifying the performance of these servos (cause I know they are NUMBER ONE), but would'nt the performance of something like the Align 610 servos be more in the "usable" range for mild 3D pilot? BTW, the Align numbers are 160+ oz/in of torque at a speed of 0.08 sec/60 deg and most important is that they only weight 1.84 oz (three would be 5.52oz) and the HV87's weight 2.6 oz (three would be 7.8 oz).

Also, at our funfly today, there was this guy flying a 90 size heli that has an OS91 engine but instead of the typical fan system, it has an electric motor and fan to cool the head. This heli was BAD AS* and the thing was on rails. Point being, he says the electric system keeps the head extremely cooler which equals better efficiency and power. Has anyone tried something like this with a YS engine?

Again, thanks guys and please keep the info and education coming. Eric

Missle,

No mods are required unless you want to loose every possible ounce. Re read the thread and I explain what is not totally needed. You can still use the stock crown hub, you will just have to use the stock mainshaft instead of the lighter FBH shaft.

No 8717 are not needed but I wanted a servo that could take 8v. And I can tell you from my own experience, the 8717 is a MUCH better servo than the 610. Especially when it comes to centering. I would never go FBL with the align servo.

IMHO it isnt nessacary. For the minimal power you gain from loosing the fan it isnt worth the extra weight. The 90s have just soo much power anyway. Besides the stock fan keeps it plenty cool.

I have been working my N9 with stock frames. I figured it will be 10.2-10.3 lbs with no fuel when i am done. I am also not changing any of the electronics. I am using the following:

611
9451s
Multi gov Pro
Futaba Fasst 8 channel

I will try to post some pics and discriptions of what i did.

^^^^ that would be a VERY light N9 with stock frames. Would be very interested in your entire set-up.

Got mine down to 10 LBS DRY .Stock frames !!

I gut my battery tray ( cut down and drilled some holes , 1.250 holes in the upper rear frame sides , no horizontal fin , 1" hole in upper front vertical fin . YS MP2 pipe .Drilled and tapped the rear x brace 4mm to thread the boom supports into .Stock head converted to FBL head , main shaft chopped 20mm , V-bar running on 8 volts no reg BLS 451 servos , mini servo on the throttle with mini DC to DC converter .Tp 2600 mah lipo prolite .I removed ONLY the upper rear X brace . I would not advise removing all of them . I made some custom carbon fiber landing gear tubes .

Every little bit helps . Just think race car ,keep it simple .Everything I did ,I can do again with a unibit the next time she hits the dirt .

Well judging from the prices for just the "lightweight" (> $400) frames, I'm starting to lean towards lightning up the electronics and improving on the power/effeciency.

Like what you have done. I did the 4mm conversion on the rear X brace. I moved my Gyro up front. I also eliminated the plastic GV mont for the gov pick up. I just use the bracket that comes with the gov. I also cut my fan shroud down. My plan is to cut the hub down, I am also going to cut the 110-312 frame conector blocks for now. I am working on a Carbon fiber plate that will replace the conector blocks and the front frame plate and make them one. It should be a 3rd or at 1/2 the weight at least. The front frame plate assembly is way too heavey and needs some work, but it will need strength for what it dose. The FBH frames fix this.
The last thing is the 115-125 and 115-130 horizontal fin clamps. I am thinking of using Black delren and makeing my own. This peace is real heavey and it is a lot of weight out the back on the boom. I am going to use alum inserts so i will not loose any clamping force when tightening the bolts. With the front plate redone and the horizontal clamp weight reduced this should make my Synergy about 10 lbs.

I am not sure that will be a weight advantage? The stock tube it pretty light now. I would like to know if it is and how much lighter.

Nice

Any one have any more ideas?

I am trying the Quick Uk boom clamp for the trex 600-700. Booms are the same size almost. And its MUCH lighter.

baddraptor, when you say that the Trex boom is "almost" the same size, will the N9 torque tube fit in the Trex 700 boom?
