I've been wanting to try building one for a while now. Have you tried it yet rcflyer?

It's a bit of a daunting task if you have little machining experience but I'm confident I'll do it eventually.

No I have not tryed to build one yet, just have had the idea, if I had the motor's, worm drives, and electronics. I could make the rest pretty easy.

Will no doubt need one of these in the future and based on what the prices are to purchase a machine, a kit assembly with probably be necessary.

Has anyone done a build thread on one of these?

I just finished one from my own design a couple of weeks ago. It took about two months+ to build, and has a working area of 420x1000mm. It cuts aluminum very easily, which I feel is an important quality for this kind of machine for the r/c hobbyist.
The financing came from reducing my hangar a little, and most of the parts where ordered from the far east via Ebay.
Here's a video of the first test cutting in aluminum (manual running):

Hopefully I can get a setup one day.

At least that when 1/2 stepping. I don't really want to divide the steps any further, as I don't want to loose repeatability.

With 1/2 stepping I have 400 steps on one turn of the motors. The threads are 5mm pitch. 5mm/400steps=0.0125mm resolution. -Theoretically that is, in practice it might be a bit more coarse.

i'm modding the head at the mo, I'll post some pics when I've done it.

untill then have a look here.
http://www.ihcnc.com/

my one is basically the same set up, but i have stepper's and my machine is a little bit smaller. these guys used to mod he same machine i have (RF45) but in the web site they list why they don't use it any more. the only thing i don't like about the RF45 (so far)is the max speed of the head. its geared to 1600, but if you tach it it's 1740. could do with being around the 3000+ mark.
