Hi,

What happend during starting the engine if, for any reason, the throtle stay fully open? Are we strong enough to hold the main blade while we unplug the fuel line?

Please... don't post ugly pictures... I know what could happend! I am scared enough!

if you have your hand on your blades when you start it, you should be plenty strong enough to hold on to it while yanking out the fuel line.

I put the fun in dysFUNctional :)

In most cases, YES with a FIRM hand on the head you should be able to stop it from rotating. Just make sure you drop the engine and check the clutch shoes and liner for damage.

Grab hold of the blades and yank the fuel line or pinch the exhaust pipe FAST!

Pinch the exhaust pipe??!!

Good Idea! I will try tommorow what it does (I am making some tests on the engine without my main gear instaled).

It actually stops faster than pinching the main line and it prevents the engine from reving at a higher rpm which leans the engine out. Of course the top is about hot start and the engine is at it's highest rpm.

Hot Start

I had a hot start last season with my Raptor 50. Someone asked me a question about my Trex 450 radio setup and I forgot to change the model in my TX back to my 50 before starting. Duh. It started full throttle and burned out the clutch quicker than I could stop the engine.

I make it point to keep a firm grip on the rotor until I've placed the heli down at the take-off spot. I see guys carry their helicopter holding the boom, but that seems too dangerous to me.

Anyway, I had no problem holding the blades of the 50 during the hot start, although the screaming engine scared the %&*! out of me!

The tail goes on the left, it has less arc to swing if the heli is on a slippery surface.

As duceduc said close the exhaust, it is a much faster shutdown and usually much easier to get to.

Hot starts do happen, after you hot start a 90 you will learn to check the carb throttle position every single time, on any bird.

It's happened to me.

As long as you have a firm grip on the main blades you will be OK. Your diaper may need changing?

Just shut the engine down by....
Pulling the fuel line
Pinching the fuel line
or what ever works for you.

I had a hot start last weekend with a Raptor 50 ,i'm an idiot...

make sure you always have a good grip on the blades when starting, adrenaline will kick in and you will get a super grip. Luckily i only had a 3 second run like that but it seemed like it was forever. If I hadn't had a good grip to start with I would probably be in rough shape right now. Just one time will heighten your awareness.

my 5th or 6th start of the day. I set the radio down to start the heli and somehow bumped the idle-up switch so it was full throttle with -10 pitch. luckily i had a good grip as always and was able plug the exhaust and kill the engine.
I prefer to plug the exhaust, if you pull the fuel line it revs the engine for just a moment giving it more power, not what you want on a hot start.

always, always have a good grip on the head when starting your heli..

I do firm grip on the blade grips, blades resting against the start shaft since it can also act as a point of stopping on my raptors, and one foot standing on a skid. I've seen a person hot start and spin the boom around completely and hit him and damage the boom and hurt him a bit in the process. Better than blades hitting you, but still avoidable with standing on the skid.

Don't Panic!
Grip rotor head tight. Step on skid. Know exactly how to yank fuel line from carb. Hold on tight until engine dies. Then vent your frustration.
