Hi,

I have been wanting a micro mill for some time,

I was looking at this

http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa...do?itemid=39743

I know it's no smithy but at $449 the price is right.
I will be doing some very light milling on wood, plastic and some Aluminum and not looking for 1/10 thou accuracy.

What do you think ? complete waste of money or OK with limitations?

Thanks for your opinions.

I just bought a small lathe (7X12) and am considering a milling machine also. I considered a combo machine but then after visiting MANY websites I decided against a combo machine. There were many that said that it's just not the best of both worlds. I also don't care for the ergonomics of the combo systems. It would seem that you have to reach around for the quill handle on the drill/mill to operate it.

I got the small lathe for $330(used) and a brand new mill is about $460 from harbor freight. I know their not the best quality but for the price it's not bad.

I am also limited on space to small machines are best for me.

Jeff

To hover is divine, the alternative is rather PLANE.

Thanks cdrking,

I really want the mill and just went with the combo as the lathe was just a bonus.
I will re-look at the dedicated mills.

Have had a couple of lathes, and recently have been researching a lot of combo machines, as I don't have a mill. From what I gather, it is better to get a quality mill and separate lathe, but if you get a QUALITY combo, as long as it is big enough to do what you do with it, it will probably be just fine. I am still looking at combos, but if I can get a good price on a mill, I will go that route.

As far as combo machines go, this is really the only one worth considering, you'll need 10X the cost of a mini mill and a decent size garge for it though... http://www.shoptask.com/

For a small mill, these are pretty good, http://www.micromark.com/MICROLUX-B...-MILL,8102.html I have one to complement the 7 x 12 lathe in the garage. Both the small lathe and the mill are offered by a number of different vendors in the US, but they're all made in the same factory in China, just different colors and maybe slightly different knobs and buttons.

Couple things to keep in mind with any of the smaller oriental machines, don't expect a high degree of accuracy, and don't bother with their tool bits. I'd rather spend $15 on a good US made end mill that lasts for a while vs. a $4 Chinese made use it once and throw it away version.

The collet holder kit I bought for the mill had to be trued on the lathe before I could use it, you could see where they had mis-bored it during the manufacturing process and consequently it wouldn't hold the collets straight, you get what you pay for! While the holder kit wasn't exactly cheap, it certainly wasn't high dollar precision equipment either

With careful setup and periodic adjustments on both the mill and lathe I find I can make just about anything within my ability and it works well enough

Thanks

That looks like it would suit me. Just got to think of a compelling reason for the wife as to why I need one.

As for bits, I still have a lot of carbide (US) bits, drills, reamers, etc left over from when I was a machinist so I should be good for a while.
