Tandem Rotor Helis Vertol Chinook > Gaui CH-47 mini build

Had this on the end of another thread ,,but thought it best to make a new thread so it would be seen by all interested .

Gaui CH -47 tandem arrived .... as did the servos ... now to build .

It is as cute as the pictures look . I think maybe I need new tri -focals before starting this build though

I usually build the kit like it is suppose to be first ...so you have something to compare your changes too ..... but this little bird is going to the chop shop right away .

I don't like the fact that the rear elevator servo sticks out of the fuse and has to be removed everytime you remove the fuse to service the mechanics ,,,a big pain and just not scale looking !!!
Although I will deal with that later . so as to get it up and flying .

It also has all the electronics mounted inside the super fragile fuse . including the battery .. So the first test setup hops will be done with a skelton setup ,,,which I probably will use some of it while in the fuse too .... as I don't think the fuse will hold the battery in a not so gentle arrival
And it will just make it easier to do maintanance on the mechanics if you can just remove everything with the mechanics and not have to unhook wires / servos to do that .

It comes with a specailly built for this little hook , scorpin motor !!!

This will take awhile as I am still working on our new house ,,so as to make a move later this summer .... but important things first right

For time saving ,, I am not going to do a full build pictorial , Hoverup on rcgrps is doing that quite nicely ,, and most can follow manuals .. I will just cover things I found off or hard to understand in the manual .

I first noticed while install servos that the two main shafts were not aligned ... mine were off by 3 or so degrees ... Needs to be dead on I would think .

The next thing was the little ball links ...some have shoulders on them and some had no shoulder ... from looking at the pictures ...the shoulder ones go on the servo arms ... which leaves the non shoulder one to go on the heads .!!???? nothing covered in the manual on that ...
I left the one shown unscrewed to show the no shoulder better and will tighten it down after posting

P.S.
There were plastic clamp on spacers with the HS 45 servos that are just about right on for making the elevator servo arm line up with the swash plate arm .

The rotor blades are marked A and B sets ... A goes on the front ... B on the back .
Timing the blades can be set by loosening the set screw on the top shaft collar and lowering the shaft and gear away from the gear and turning until rotors are close to timed .

I made gyro mount plates (2) and clamp to permanently attach the gyro to the mechanics ,,instead of on the fuselage side .

And I will make the same type of mount for the battery to sit on .

First big frustration
I hook up the 368 like the manual says .... center the servos ,,, check cyclic throws and right control directions ,,, and the elevator and collective are on the opposite sticks ,,like it is setup for their mode 1 config .
I reverse the collective and elevator signal wires at the RX and now the coll / elev on the right sticks ( collective on left stick and elev. on right )

Go on to the next step and check how the gyros are controlling the cylic's ... everything is ok ,,, except the pitch gyro is controlling the collective pitch and according to the manual it should control the elevator axis ????? and it controls the collective with both swash plates moving the same direction ( if you move the nose down ,,, both collective swash plates go up ,,,, not differentially ) ???? The pitch gyro controlling the collective would be o.k. ,,, if it did it differentially ( one swash up and the other down ) ... it would fly ,,but not like the manual says it should

So I move the gyro signal wires at the RX back to where the manual says they should be .... the gyro does the exact same thing ?????

I email Fung and Gaui asking for a manual for the 368 ,,,, after trying the download manual for the 365 ... which didn't come close .... thinking that there may be a dip switch or two that got reversed ,, I compare my settings with hoverup who has a build going on over on another board and they are the same ... using spectrum 2.4 radios in 1 servo config like the manual calls for ....So I try different dip settings and different RX signal out to gyro combinations and end up stripping a few servo gears out ... now I have to order a bunch of servo gears and haven't even run it up or left the work bench !!!!

It has been 2 days now in Hong Kong ,,,and I still don't have a manual for the 368 or an answer , or a 368 gyro that works right or an expensive CH -47 that has the first flight on it ,, and Fung wants me to send the gyro back for him to trouble shoot and then send it back / or a new one .... do I see THREE MORE WEEKS OR MORE WASTED

Does any one over seas have a 368 gyro manual that they can scan for me ????

25.00 to send the hunk of junk 368 back to Hong Kong
When probably a manual would have fixed it

Sorry to hear of all your problems Larry. Hope they do right by you at the end of the day.

Here's my approach to electronics mounting. Beats the instruction manual approach IMHO.

Little update on this old thread I now understand why he didn't just send out a new gyro ... read responce to my question of if he recieved my gyro yet !!!

Quote
hi

just got you will have new order soon i put a new ?

fung

Seems he don't have extra gyros either !!!!
It is probably why they don't email a manual either ... one doesn't exist

Since I am gyroless (sent in the bad one and he just got it today )
I have been spending the limited time I have to work on mine with rebuilding stripped servo gears and relocating the rear servo ... It is finished (will get pix up soon )... all except for making a quick fix longer control rod .... on the larger birds a steel coat hanger and a 3mm die and you have a nifty control rod the right length ,,,but these little buggers are harder to come by

Durn. Bad luck that. I am anxious to see your rear elevator servo remount scheme Larry as I have not attacked that while I am down for parts.

Another update ... just been pmed by a U.S. dealer and seems the problems that we are having (instructions and backwards modes, etc. and probably the servo mount ) are our own problems .. as the bird is not suppose to be released to us here in the states yet .

Thus the no English 368 manual and probably some of the other things that we are picking at .He wants to help us get things straightened out so this bad little boy flies good for us even though we jumped the gun and got pre release kits ,,, which has always been my experience when dealing with Gaui .

Hopefully Gaui will be watching our threads and some of this will not show up in the US released kits to come across .
Guess you and I are kind of their beta testers here in the US .....
Will get the servo pix uploaded as soon as I get home tonight .

O.K. inside servo pix ,,, needs a little alignment yet ,,but you get the idea ... there is about 12 mm clearance between the servo and the top of the cabin and about 5 between the top servo and side of cabin ,, the pushrod for now is plastic kit sprue (sp) and drilled so the Gaui 200 cyclic pushrods thread into the end ,,, seems to be plenty stiff and work quite well ,, we will see once it flies .
The 1.5 mm carbon servo mount bolts right onto the side frame to the existing bearing mount and spacer bolt spots ... so no new holes to drill in the side frame,, and I will probably add lightening holes on the servo mount .Probably could use 1mm but the 1.5 mm was all I had in stock .

no more servo ... just a pushrod ... will put painted panel over both fuse holes ... and be scale again

After playing around with the sprue pushrod ,, I decided I would feel better with a carbon rod ...so off to find some ... hey this 2.9 mm old rex tail support should do . Wrap the ends with thread and CA ,,drill , insert short guai 200 threaded rod more CA and you have a stiff pushrod .

Also lightened the servo mount some and added spacers to the servo and flipped the servo arm ball to other side so it won't rub on the servo case and it also lined it up with the swash better .

Well ... end of April and still no 368 gyro back from Fung ...
But have been contacted by the US Guai rep and he is going to hook us up with a guy that is knowledgeable on the setup of the 368 gyro .
I have been talking with another guy that has one and if all else fails we are going to use Tech Model Products TH -2 GP mixer on this bird to get it in the air ... we both have to much invested to let it just hang waiting for Guai to get things around for this cute little bird .
I may even remove the heavy /weak ,middle motor mount system and put in a light weight alum square tube (which will keep the main mast alignment right on ) and put the motor on the front with a 200 main gear as there seems to be plenty of give and places to loosen up and loose the proper gear mesh and main mast alignment .

Haven't given up yet ,,, just want to give Fung and Guai and the US rep a chance to get this going their way first .
Larry

Boyd ,,, you and I have to get together some time

Good luck on the tests today ,,, and keep us posted as to how the flight test go ... I am thinking that the TH -2 should make a great flying bird out of this cute little bird . The extra gyros might make it a bit heavy ,,but that extra weight could be lost by removing the troublesome mid mount motor mount and making the rest more like a mini Tech hook

Good news ,,, a guy that has a copy of the what the dip switch settings do for the 368 gyro has found this thread and is going to email me a copy ... so if and when the gyro gets here from flying hobbies ,,, I can try to get this bird in the air and see what other problems I run into .
