Hi Every one
Will just like to explain our approach on how did we think we are now ready for releasing the ESC.
The first prototype was developed and run in August 2006, originally was a 10S controller, many was send to our sponsor pilots and with the feedback we got we decided to change it to a 12S controller, first 12S prototype was made in mid of 2007, first was tested on plane, we then decided to change the 4 layer PCB to a 6 layer pcb to have more copper in it to reduce the internal resistance, ,any change was made to the firmware, in early 2008 we changed the PCB design to 8 layer to reduce the IR again, started testing it on Helis and realize the governor was not up to the task, firmware changed over 300 times in the last 12 months, the component we used has changed as well many time.
So far we have over a 150 ESC that has been manufactured and tested by helis and plane pilots, including myself, I fly with them for over 2 years now on my planes and helis, out of the 150 plus in testing, a few did burn up and issue that we can find has been corrected.

All the ESC that we ship are fully tested during and after the manufacturing, when the ESC leave the production for packaging, they have been tested at full load for 3 minutes, 110% load until the protection kick in and start to limit the output, making sure that the over currents protection is working, but even doing all this to make sure the ESC is working right we still occasionally see results like c54fun have experienced.

What we will do for the HV series is run them at the QC testing stage for 5 minutes, and then test it again for 3 minutes to make sure if something was going to fail but did not, will fail on the second test.

The Scorpion 50V series of ESC is new to the market, but it’s a products that has been tested by pilots for over 2 years, and if anyone has a problem with the ESC, it will be replace or if the person decide he do not want to use the ESC again, I will make sure he gets a full refund.

Happy landing.
Georges

The Scorpion guarantee is no quibble & faultless, also 2 years. Also, like any product, good or bad, the more of that product out there, the more people there are to report faults. I have an order in for 2.

I'm sure this ESC will prove to be a good one, just like the rest of the Scorpion ESC's & motors.

c54fun,

I replied to the Email that you sent us, and included an RMA form to fill out and send back with the ESC. We will take a look at the ESC when it arrives and let you know what we find out.

Hi c54fun,

Sorry to hear what has happened and I'm also quite shocked to be honest as In the last month I've received 5 130amp ESC'S from Georges and there all still in working order,

I've been testing this ESC since Feburary 2007 and have to give credit to Georges for the amount of work he has put in, 100's maybe even 1000's of hours has gone into the design of this product and after posting the graph last week I was really excited at them been released as all our hard work had paid off.

Then when I seen your post this morning I was gutted thinking "what could have happened"

Either way your in good hands as Georges & Lucien are both fantastic guy's that stands by there products 100%

Two years ago I was flying a different brand ESC and in one week I had 3 fail so I would hope you'd give it another try.

I have had things go wrong but never an ESC yet. I guess I was over due. Just glad nothing else got damaged.

I have asked for a refund and will be using a different ESC on this heli for now but I am planning on building a 700E next. I will use Scorpion motor for sure and if some of you other guys have good luck with there ESC I may try it again.

Good new's is I have 3 other heli's and we have nice weather now.

Thanks to Innov8tive and the Georges for there backing of this product. Your motor's rock and I am sure your ESC's will too.

Hi Phil,

Be good to see a vid and an update on how it's holding out. There's been a couple of posts about bad ones and I for one would like to hear people having positive results.

Whats the latest with this ESC? I wanted to buy one but after the bad results i read i gave it a miss and my LHS in Dubai sent the rest of the 130A esc back. Guess they also took the online info to heart as I was informed by the LHS later that one also caught fire here and was returned.

wish they would fix them as i have these in my 450 Pro and the 60A heli one works well.

How well does the governor work on this Scorpion ESC? How about the soft start?

I’ve never been good at conserve battery life and resorted to fly a fixed 3,5min on all my regular field helies (srimok 90 is interior house decoration) and I take to the field with enough batteries do 6 flights (yes I know expensive on the batteries and hope I don’t crash before all 6 flights. Lol

Also in my case on account of the massive excess power of my own helies setups the governor is never in use as I manage fine on throttle curves. Im also no Bert K so cant say I max out my toys potential.

In an ESC all I care for is (1) a good soft start, (2) fast throttle response (3) efficient power delivery at the rated amps once it gets going, (4) reliability so I don’t have to buy another ESC.

Im sure there are many that do care for the full deluxe bells and whistles including the governor, especially if you want to maximize flight time. Chinese have a whole range of these ESC’s but im cautious with sending $2-3K into the air to not have it return

What makes the Kontronik ESC so nice is the governor feature. It maintains a constant head speed irregardless of what maneuver you put the heli through. An ESC who's governor hunts for the right RPM causes the heli's tail to wag all over the place. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the new Scorpion governor?

Burnt HK4035-500 and 130A Commander

Hi Guys,

I just tried my 130A ESC and the motor was running rough and kicked at the 25 degree timing (as specified by Scorpion for the HK4035-500).

I then tried a lower timing at 5 degrees and that got the motor running smooth.

First attempt to lift off caused the motor to smoke. The motor was shut down immediately. Motor and ESC temps are measured at around 120-130F.

After letting the motor/ESC cool down, an attempt was made to see if the motor would still run. It would spin a short while but would emit a screeching sound and stop.

My guess is that the motor is shot.

Settings for the ESC is 8khz, 25 then 5 degree timing, slow start on 10s. Motor is a HK4035-500.

Installed in a Vario Argos 700mm class heli with 2 stage gear reduction.

We pre-spin the rotor for all tests.

Both items are new.

Any ideas?

Chen

I've not a had a good time recently with ESC in 700s - my 130A Scorpion went in to replace a Jive 120 that was winking 7 LED and had to get sent back to the factory - on a Henseleit MPXL with 4035-560 motor on 12S - I left timing on auto and just used the card to put into Heli gov mode and set throttle limits. AFter good runs with the Jive the 4035 ran weak, hot and cut out twice - the governor was surging horribly - I had a couple of hard autos and reset the ESC to non gov mode and it seemed to work heaps better - unfortunately my flight testing was limited by the tail losing authority due to a chipped front TT bevel gear I hadn't spotted from the previous autos - so have to wait for some Henseleit spares.

Maybe I should have set the timing to low manual 8 or 15 but I figured a Scorpion ESC on auto timing should handle a Scorpion motor.

The Jive 120 I bought to replace the bad one is now playing up to on the TDR - reluctant to arm and giving 2 wink LEDs on a Pyro 32 motor - maybe time to give nitro a spin again

Seems the large Scorpion ESC's are not performing as well as the smaller of the range - Dissapointing

It seems there is no substitute for the wildly expensive Kontronik ESCs.

I'm not so sure - my first Jive 120 gave up after 4-5 flights - 7 LED flash error code and now my replacement is intermittently arming with a 2 flash error code after about the same number of flights
