Are you guys using the metal tail pulley on the K3D?

Nope. 8 crashes and 138 flights on the plastic.

Anybody got any video of flying styles?

I would highly recommend going to the metal tail pulley if you are flying hard 3d with a lot of piro stuff

I ahve seen them break 2 minutes into flight with my style of flying

6mm spindle

A couple in this thread have made the statement that they don't see the need to upgrade to the 8mm spindle. I was in that camp until Sunday. I've been flying my knight for some time (couple of years at least) with the 6mm spindle, doing mild 3D. On Sunday I was pulling some large loops when I heard a big bang, something flew off the heli (the tail assembly) and the heli dropped to the ground like a brick from about 100ft. I'd had a boom strike, good and proper. I can only think this was due to the 6mm shaft bending in flight and I have no idea why it would have bent then when its been fine for ages.

Needless to say I've now ordered the 8mm upgrade, together with the higher spec clutch assembly and required spares - only came to £138 which includes £55 for the two upgrades. A pretty cheap repair given the impact the heli had. One of the V1 side frames cracked but was able to repair it, to upgrade to the V2 frames (both sides) would have been another £40.

This is one solidly built heli and cheap to repair

SMITHB - hhmmm... Was that your knight that broke after two minutes of flight or other's heli that you just saw? I'm guessing that you're better than Tareq Alsaadi if it was you that broke the tail in less than two minutes. WOW!

Good point. This:

is a bone stock 3D and it seems to hold up ok.

Very nice flying but is the hub on the 8s 600E the same as the 3D, I need to check? Also, I think it has been changed in the last year too...again, I need to look. In any case, I guess QC on that part could have been an issue since Tareq hits it pretty hard too and his has not failed.

its the same pulley..and plastic tail housing that hits the housing at full deflection..altho you would probably never use that much and can stop it from hitting with gyro limits.

and plastic tail housing that hits the housing at full deflection.

Are you referring to the pitch plate contacting the control arm?

The original Knight "Pro" with the metal tail used an angled pitch plate that didn't do that. Since the metal grips have their control arms on center, and the arms are offset on the plastic grips, they designed that one with straight link arms to compensate for the different grips. This potentially can hit the middle of the bearing section of the pitch control lever.

The new metal tail housings have a completely different control mechanism that also have the capability of contacting the control lever if the limits aren't set properly.

I have a feeling Mr. Smith is fully capable of correctly setting up his gyro, though I suppose he could soften up those stops a wee bit!

haha, ive seen him fly in person. I saw him fly his knight 600e 8s, and his trex 700e on 12s. The videos don't do him justice. If you ever get the chance ask him if you can stand with him while he flies, its friggin awesome.

I fell victim to heli lust and bought the same setup he has for his 600e
...Do i really need almost 5hp on a 7pound heli, heck yea!

I find the harder I "throw down" at the field... the more peices i have to pick up.

Everything looks good for a back to back test of my 600n and k3d this weekend.

600n weighs 7 lbs 8 oz
k3d weighs 8 lbs 2 oz

both were ready to fly weight with fuel. The only thing missing out of both was the rx pack. That is still a 10 oz difference though.
