Maybe the cause is one or both of the support bearings of the primary shaft or mainshaft are worn and lock up momentarily causing strain on the one-way drive bearing.

That would be worth looking into but for the fact they are new
<6 gallons
OR
the fact that I do the bearing mod during the build

I didn't have this problem last year

It did it on a Hawk pro, a Raven and a K50
the 50's are swinging 620 blades
the 30 OS37 is swinging 550 blades

Funny...was out flying with others that have the original raven and when mine locked up I was talking about it (complaining) he said "I never had a problem with mine" and I said wow, have you checked it?? He said "well lets take a look"...sure enough he discovered it was locked up the hole time!

Yep, this was me

For the life of me, I didn't even think there was SUPPOSED to be a one way there! It's been locked up like that for as long as I can remember. No biggee.. Still autos fine. I suppose I learned to auto like that. Think it'll make a big difference if I free it up?

Ahh, I'm afraid he has other priorities atm. He sold all his stuff. Said he might get back into it in a couple years.

Blade_Master1: please send in your CTD that has locked up and the shaft. We'd like to take a look and see what could be causing this issue. PM us for details.

Thank You

I would like to know what is going on with them as well.
but when 3 out 4 ctd fail you gotta wonder what is happening.

if it was only me then so be it, but a friend of mine has a brand new NX with only a couple of gallons through it and it locked in the first gallon.

My Hpro slipped for a while but seems to be holding
my K50 also slipped on the first gallon
my Raven is locked up but can be forced free
and my spare is also not smooth and never installed

I wish Century would sell replacement bearings so I could change it
I believe they are only pressed in

This is all rather curious as I am sure there are a couple of thousand of those out there that are working properly. My experience with them is that all the ones I have seen have all been very trouble free, so I would be curious to find why yours and your friends are not.

Maybe it is something in the air in your part of the world

is it possible they are sending the leftovers to Canada ??? LOL j/k

I'm not mad at Century nor do I blame them for my troubles.

But is very much appreciated when a Company backs their product
and it gives you confidence to know that you actualy bought a great product.

I for one fly at a field where there's a lot of sand in the air, so I suppose that might account for it.

The first one that locked up on me, I hadn't done the extra bearing mod, and the shaft got eaten through. I have no idea when it locked up. My second one though was from helihell's heli, which only had a gallon or so through it before I took it off his hands. Though I did take it off his hands AFTER he'd crashed it.

Still, you'd think they'd put up with a little more punishment than that.

Anyways, the point I suppose is that mine have good reason to have locked up. I don't know about BM one way or the other, but RH50 crashed too before it locked up I think. Neither of the other guys fly at the field I do (sandy).

I too just started having a problem with my one way bearing in my constant tail drive slipping. Hovering seemed to be OK but any more power than that, with the increased torqued involved, it would slip and the engine would race and would have to auto down.

The CTD unit is 4 years has never been abused or in a crash before or had a hot start. I oil it periodically with tri-flow. I also fly from a grass field and there is no sand or loose debris to get blown around and my heli is always super clean.

I would guess after 4 years of use it may have just finally wore out.

We may get spoiled here sometimes with our Century helis. Some other brands of helis I have had, wore out their auto bearings (an a number of other items) a couple of times a season.

I did suspect that the whole bearing itself might be turning inside the the aluminum recess since there was a small amount of black type grease emitting from the edges of the bearing in the aluminum recess.

Problem solved!!!

After some troubleshooting, my Constant tail drive is actually working OK. The problem I was having was not the CTD bearing slipping, but the big auto bearing I left in the main gear when I installed the CTD assembly.

I did not want the driven tail during autos therefore I did not install the aluminum plug in the main gear, I left the auto bearing in there that was stock from the Hawk kits so that I can completely shut down the tail in a emergency. Basically, I have 2 auto bearings in the transmission.

Upon inspection of the big auto bearing, I found a small hairline crack (I spread it open with pliers for the picture) on the outside of the bearing. The bearing was spreading open under high torque loads (3/4- full throttle) and caused the inner bearing to slip and the engine to race followed by rotor RPM decay.
