My Posts This: Topic Forum | Sesrched this myself for quite some timeI have been flying helis for less than 1 yr but when I got my Beam, I too wanted to know if an external BEC was a good idea. After spending quite some time on various forums, the general concensus is that if you are flying more than 3 digital servos, it is a good idea to use an external bec (a switching bec). Many receivers do not deal well with voltage sags which could cause loss of controll. The external bec will stabilize the voltage. I am sure that many of the "onboard" bec's on esc's are sufficient but for 25.00 and a little installation time, the extra protection seems worth it. I went with an external Castle BEC. Also, pay attention to the voltage requirements of your servos. My BEC can run at voltages from 4.8 to ?? volts. My servos are rated at 4.8 but the manufacturer states that 5.1 (default for the castle bec) is ok. However, they also state not to run them at 6.0 volts for extended periods of time. "This will damage the servos", they say. So I left the BEC at 5.1 volts. |
