Guys,
I ordered a new starter the week before I totalled my P-Max and it came in earlier this week. I had a chance to test it out last night and MAN this thing has some grunt.

My Hobbico Torquemaster 180 on 14.4v doesn't have anywhere near the grunt that this little dude has. It has a metal case and is gear reduction unit. So, it's initial punch is really high but the cool thing is that it's still got a pretty fast motor. It comes with either the cone for airplane style adapting or the CNC purple end that not only screws onto the motor shaft but ALSO has two "cinch" screws like the Vario and KSJ start wands. Now if only it has a one-way bearing in it(HINT HINT).....

I don't know about it's longevity but for you guys looking for a starter for those big blocks this might be the real deal.......

Works good.

I have a couple buddys using them. They are really nice and I plan to replace mine with one soon as it goes south.

Be careful of the handle it can slip and cause the "trigger" to stick on.
Not sure exactly how it slips, but I know it was exciting when I pulled it off my buddys 90 and it was still spinning...

David,
I think your thinking of the Kavan unit and yes it is a very noisy unit and I have used and seen them over the years. You are correct that these gear reduction type starters have been around for awhile. But, this unit is not the same. It is being sold on Century & MPI's website with the same labels.

It's MUCH better quality and has a higher speed to it. This unit is much heavier than the Kavan one or the one on Hobby People's website as I have used both. It's probably a refined version of what has been floating around for a few years.

Daz,
The heli version:

Whatever or whoever makes it seems to be of better quality and performance. My C-Spec will probably appreciate it more....

David is right...

HHI has been selling the EXACT same starter for at least a year now. It is noisy and pretty heavy IMO, but works great on any heli.

I know which one you guys are talking about and this one is not noisy like that. It's almost as quiet as my direct drive Hobbico Torquemaster.

I don't think it's the HHI, one. They may look the same but there must have been a refinement done to this one because it's quiet, powerful, yet still real fast like a direct drive.

This is the HHI unit. It has a different molded handle on theirs AND the wire lead out of the motor on the Century/MPI unit has a RC Car type connector pigtail. You can't see it in Century's photo but it's there....

Difference?

On Century's website, they sell one that is for helicopters and for airplanes. The heli one is $10 more. What's the difference?

I purchased a Magnum starter very similar to the one Lift shows on his post, and burned out 2 of them. They both burned up when I tried to start a heli with it, and now I only use it on my planes, maybe it is the plane version. Hobbypeople replaced it both times!!! Daz...

I'm curious .. this will start an OS91 using those 12V hobby batteries? Currently, I'm toting around one of those huge jump your car/put air in your tires/run a light/with a cigarette lighter adapter all-in-one type of things that you find at costco. If this works with the 12V that everyone else uses to start their engines, I'm gonna drive over to Century now, and get one.

Sillyness,
The plane version comes with a cone. The heli version uses the Century start wand. The wand has been sold separately for sometime by Century so I'm guessing they just merged the two into one and package it that way. So, there's the extra $10. Not a bad price if you ask me.

Daz,
The Magnum one has a little plastic push tab on it doesn't it? And, the unit is plastic if I remember correctly. This one has a very sturdy metal case except for the end-caps/stand/button assembly.

dwarness,
I have been using the regular 2-7.2v RC car battery pack setup that many of us use on my Hobbico Torquemaster 180. It would start my C-Spec right up as long as it "got it going". But, if the motor wasn't cooperative it was over! Off to pop the hood on my car....

This one on a regular 12v gel cell spins the motor over instantly without the "turn...rumble rumble....turn turn..." struggle that my other starter had. It hits hard and then once it gets past the first compression stroke it's a done deal till you let off the button or the motor starts. You have to REALLY REALLY grab the CNC coupler and hang on tight to get it to stall.

Don't know about the lifespan and other stuff but I have used gear reduction starters before and this one seems to a winner. Hope I don't eat crow a month from now.....

No the magnum is a metal case with plastic ends, and button, it looks just like the one in your picture. It works great starting my big 1/4 scale planes, it just doesnt seem to like heli's. But I have a dynatron for my heli's anyway, so it doesnt make much difference!!!

Daz,
Is this the one you had?
http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/237960.asp

This looks EXACTLY like the one that HHI sells. But, the handle is molded differently than the Mini Maxx. You can see that it doesn't have that little leg on it for setting it down on a table.

Mine's still going stong............

How is yall's doing? I got about 35 starts on it now. Some have really bogged it down but I was running the 14.4 RC car packs and discovered my packs are old and DONE!

I have been using a small 12v marine trolling motor battery lately. It's good for a weekend at the FFs starting mine, charging, and everyone elses!

One thing I have noticed though is that you MUST tighten down the tow long bolts that run thru the starter that keep it together. Otherwise the handle will try to slip on the case. Just a FYI!

Hi Guys

You might used other brand not the Century's "Mini Max", there are few different company make similar products like our Mini Max.
But, NO ONE can ever make our Mini Max quality, all they can do just a out side image. Starter motor all looks the same. But, Only inside guts count.

BTW, if you had problem with your Mini Max, Please give us a call or just send it back, I'll refund your money or exchange 2 new one for you.

I just got my mini-max yesterday, and it works great! I like the fact that the leads come with a standard 7.2V Batt connector. Nice touch!

Haven't heard anymore lately about these starters. My old starter melted the switch at a funfly Jan 1. It was shot anyway and would just barely start my OS50 with 2 7.2V car packs. I remembered these old posts about the Mini-Maxx, so I ordered one. Just got it, hooked it up to my car packs and tried it out on my OS50. All I have to say is WOW, this thing sure packs a wallop and it spins quite fast for a gear reduction starter.

I would like to hear from all you folks that have had one for a while. How are they holding up? Everyone still satisfied?

Thanks,
Trace

update:

Lift is still using that same starter....popping over OS 91 C-specs, YS 91's......the Raven 50 and a raven 30. It has been doing GREAT so far. Only problem I have seen is one of the tamaya ends in the pigtail is being stubborn.....a wiggle of the plug and away it goes. As far as the starter.....kickin big blocks in the buttocks !
I would recommend it.....after seeing it get the weekly workout !

I have one of those starter (mini Max) and so does JimmyHua. The thing really has some torque and yes.........you can use a regular 12V battery for it. It turns ove my OS .91 without any problems.

I don't know about weight but this thing is a meer light-weight compared to my other starters. For around $30 you can't go wrong with it.

Hey Ray,

I'll be back on Guam sometime by mid February I guess. I'll give Jan a call when I get back. And I'll cut a check for money owed by the club. Thanks.

Also, to clarify. My mini-Max starter actually could not turn over the Webra91-AARs, until after the webra was sufficiently broken in.

Now after 5 gallons, it turns it over like I am starting the OS50.

The real question is this: I haven't started my Predator Max in over 3 months. You think that engine will even turn over when I get back???

You think so??

Jimmy......I heard that Ray was keeping that motor from seizing up for you while you were gone......

Pull the glow plug, a squirt of WD 40 down the carb, spin it for 30 seconds.....fuel, replace the plug and go get 'em !
